Do I need two 3DS consoles to do it? Can I "link them up" using one console and buy them separately? How would it work?

Didn't they have a password feature to get to the 'real' final boss even without linking up?
Sony bought Konami and will release a DDR game for the Nintendo 3DS. In this game, you set your 3DS on the floor and stomp on it till it no longer functions.

They only used a password system, I don't believe they actually linked up.

They used passwords to link.

I'm honestly surprised everyone remembers link cables and not passwords. For Pokémon sure, there'd be multiple gameboys and link cables everywhere, but for Zelda one person would own both games and link them by him/herself.

I didn't play them on the GBC but I thought that I remembered that you could use either a password or a link cable (like you can with Golden Sun and Golden Sun tLA).

Am I wrong?

This. I bought link cables for my GBA specifically for these and fourswords on ALttP. Also helpful for the Golden Sun transfer.

The passwords in this gane, and the gameboy megaman games make the 3ds' game notes feature INCREDIBLY USEFUL *hint hint, wink wink*. You know what to do now.

Yep, but the IR option offered to GBC owners never worked.

Yeah, the "link up" was one of the reasons they scrapped the 3rd game that was planned for the oracle line up. They couldn't figure out how to transfer info between 3 games with the password or link feature. Well, at least that's what I read back in the day.

Three Zelda games would have been killer. Maybe we'll see that 3rd game one day(but I doubt it).
