I wonder how much space a downloaded 3DS game takes up?

Yeah, mostly for me it was in anticipation of Oracle of Seasons/Ages, and I had an extra SD card laying around anyway. Fire Emblem: Awakening was about a gig as far as I remember, and it's on the lower end of storage space usage for 3DS games.

If you have a PC with SD slot, it is the easiest thing possible

Max is 32g, but even if you get one bigger, it will still recognize it up to 32g as far as I know.

I'm using a 32GB microSD with adapter without any problems.

Biggest you want to go without needing to worry is 32GB, otherwise I heard you have to format the card to FAT storage (for those above 32GB).

The Sandisk Ultra 32GB is a very popular choice. Good price on Amazon.

Oh, and to answer the question about full game sizes. Resident Evil Revelations is by far the largest at 3.2 GB. Most full games are more like 1 GB, while eShop and Virtual Console games are much less than that. 32GB will be plenty.
