Well worth it, I hadn't played any MH game prior to MH3U and I ended up loving it, so yeah, definitely a game I'd recommend.
I'd really like to ask, but what did you like about the game? When I tried it I got bored from the combat. Although I'd love a game like MH if there was more to the combat.
There's actually a lot of depth to the combat, and each weapon type really. Mastering even one weapon type takes quite a while, but that was part of the charm for me (my main weapons so far have been the Switch Axe, the Hunting Horn and the Long Sword). Other than that, the fights with the big monsters are awesome, and there's this constant sense of progress as you collect ever more goods that you can use in tons of different ways later.
