Do I keep my saves when I do a system transfer to a new 3DS?

Read somewhere that only the games themselves transfer and not my save data but that seemed really idiotic.

I don't know where you got your information, but whoever told you that was lying. Everything including saves gets switched over. It's like having your old system in a new shell.

As long as you transfer the SD Card, that is. If you don't, you don't keep the saves for your digital games, but other games save on the cart.

Everything on the source system is kept if you keep your memory card. Everything on the target system is wiped and has to be redownloaded.
