It's actually a GOOD thing to get a system late in its life. It means you'll be able to choose from like a million games and a lot of them will be cheaper than when they first launched. I see no downside other than having a huge backlog.

This is how you reason when buying a console:

Does it have enough games that you want? ---> Buy.
If it doesn't.-----> Don't buy.

It's not too late to buy ANY console at this point and that includes the Sega Genesis, NES, GBA, Nintendo 64, Atari 2600 etc. as long as you are interested in its games.

Late in its life? It's just a baby, a toddler.

Talk about late, i just bought a DSLite and now i have a huge library of games to enjoy for cheap.So its always better to buy late in life and its definitely worth getting a 3ds now.

Im leaning more towards and original or XL. 2ds just seems ugly/clunky to me. Anyone who bought a 2ds have any input on that? Never seen one in person.

Also whats a decent price to buy a used 3ds/xl? In the perfect world I would get the fire emblem blue one, but I know I would be paying a premium for that. Thanks for the help guys, ive been jonesing for a Nintendo system for a while but the Wii U is a bit too expensive for me right now.

It's nowhere near too late. Hell, I only got a GBA-SP last year and I use the heck out of that thing.

Another advantage of getting a system late are all the awesome special editions that you can get. For instance this:
