My brother fried one of his phones doing that but it wasn't the same speakers I want to do it with.

What's the highest Watts/Volts/Herts a 3DS XL can handle?

...or you could research it yourself? 3DS battery isn't designed to push out that kind of output, it's meant for headphones. Do it at your own risk.

If you're talking about plugging something into the headphones jack on the 3DS to output audio to speakers, then no, you can't damage the 3DS. It's acting as the amplifier in that scenario. You can possibly blow your external speakers depending on their design, but nothing is being input into the 3DS, so there's no risk of "frying" it.

I have my 3DS output sound to a boom box. It works just fine.
