Review by Ertai Wizard Master
"An entertaining portable action/puzzle game."
Donkey Kong is a game that is sure to keep you entertained for a long car ride or plane flight. It faithfully reproduces the first four levels of the classic arcade game. And from there on it becomes an very clever action/puzzle game. For once that plummer is using his brain!
Graphics: 7 out of 10
They were nothing groundbreaking but they suit the style of game nicely. Afterall on the original game boy you can’t judge a game by its graphics.
Sound: 10 out of 10
The music and effects are good quallity (for gameboy) and are very well suited to the style of this game. They are a little bit un-mario-ish but still memorable and well composed.
Replay Value: 8 out 10
It doesn’t have the best reasons to replay it but its really fun and you can enjoy it again even if you’ve already beaten it.
Gamplay: 8 out of 10
Well the game is about Donkey Kong kiddnapping Princess Daisy and Mario chases Donkey Kong around solving a variety of puzzles to open the lock to get to Donkey Kong. The way the game is set up you will gradually learn elements (like switches, temporary bridges, swimming, etc.) to solving each puzzle. Once you learn a new element it will be combine with the old elements to make the game gradually get more challenging until you reach the grand finale. There are a variety of moves mario can perform such as doing a backflip, landing on his hands then doing a jump to jump higher than the average jump. Once you get started you will find this game quite addictive. The control is perfect. There are never problems with response and such. It is pretty long for a game boy game but keeps itself from getting repetitive with challenge and variety. Each level is unique and memorable. Whenever I go on a planeflight I always start playing this again it still stays fun whether you’ve already beaten it or not. It didn’t get a 9 or a 10 because towards the end it almost falls apart.
Overall: 8 out of 10
Even though some spots might seem boring in this game you can still play through the whole thing. At the worst it’s something interesting to keep you occupied. It might not appeal to everyone because its far from traditional 2-D Mario games. It’s pretty inexpensive these days so you’ll be sure to get your moneys worth. With classics like this around you might wonder why Nintendo isn’t stirring up anything like this anymore.
