In German versions of this game, when a Buzz Blob turns into a Cukeman, they will make some rather sexual comments, an extreme rarity in the Zelda series. Examples include "Nie ohne kondom" ("Not without a condom!") and "Gib mir deinen saft, ich geb'dir meinen" ("Give me your juice, I'll give you mine").
In the localized version of this game, you can give a Hook to a fisherman for a Necklace, and then give that to a mermaid for a Scale from her tail. However, in the Japanese version, Link will be given a pink bra in lieu of a necklace.
Early notes from the design period of development show notes that say "What about 1P mode?", indicating that Link's Awakening was originally to be multiplayer in nature.
Originally, this game was intended to be a remake of the SNES title The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, though it later branched off during development as its own title. This fact is still remnant in early promotion materials for the game, showing graphics, enemies, and maps much akin to A Link to the Past.
Though previous Zelda games utilized trading one item in exchange for another item, Link's Awakening was the first in the series to utilize a "Trading Sequence" which needed to be completed in order to finish the game. Future Zelda games would follow this trading process.
Development of Link's Awakening began as an after-hours project by lower staff members at Nintendo, when other members joined on the project after executives took notice to the work in progress and requested that it be its own original title rather than a port of A Link to the Past.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma once said if Link's Awakening hadn't been made after A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time would've been very different.
This was the first game in the franchise not to feature Zelda, Ganon, or the Triforce in any way, shape or form. It was also the first Zelda game not to take place in Hyrule.
The original release of Link's Awakening in 1993 marked the longest time gap before another Zelda game would be released. The next entry in the series, Ocarina of Time, was released in 1998.
Director Takashi Tezuka wanted the game's world to have a similar feeling to the American television series Twin Peaks, which features characters in a small town. He suggested that the characters of the game be written as "suspicious types", akin to those in the TV show.
Writer Yoshiaki Koizumi came up with the idea of the island in a dream, and also conceived the interactions with the other characters in Mabe Village.
Link's Awakening took 18 months to develop.
Co-writer Kensuke Tanabe came up with the idea of an egg on top of a mountain. He explained he really wanted to see this design and concept in a video game and was given the chance to base the story of Link's Awakening around this idea.
Shigeru Miyamoto was not as involved with the staff members of Link's Awakening despite that he was the producer. Rather, he was mainly the game tester, and from there would give his opinions which influenced the development team.
Link's Awakening was the first video game to be composed by Minako Hamano and Kozue Ishikawa.
The game's trading sequence was based on the Japanese folktale "The Legend of the Straw Millionaire" in which a man becomes incredibly wealthy by making a series of trades starting with a single piece of straw.
In promotion of the game's US release, Nintendo sponsored a crosscountry train competition called the Zelda Whistle Stop Tour. The event, which lasted three days, allowed selected players to test Link's Awakening in a timed race to complete the game.

The frog you learn "Frog's Song of Soul" from is actually Wart, the antagonist of Super Mario Bros 2 (or Doki Doki Panic, if you prefer the true original source). The reason he introduces himself as Mamu is that it's his original Japanese name, and the translators probably overlooked the connection.
