"A great fighter, that any Mortal Kombat fan would enjoy, and many non Mortal Kombat fans aswell."

The Mortal Kombat series finally makes it's comeback with Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. The first game in the series in 4 long years. Fans of the series have been awaiting a new game, does it live up to the expectations of the fans?

Story: 8/10

The story in Deadly Alliance is told decently from the opening movie, and picks up exactly from where it left off. There are also some unexpected character deaths, such as Liu Kang, and Shao Khan. It starts out with you discovering that the sorcerer Quan Chi has escaped from the netherrealm, unlocked the secrets of the undefeatable army of the long forgotten Dragon King, and has formed an alliance with Shang Tsung, hence the name Deadly Alliance. The first thing they do together is travel to outworld to dispose of anyone who may cause problems with their plans. They go to outworld to dispose of Shao Khan, it doesn't show him die, it just shows his helmet covered in blood bounce down the steps leading up to his chair. Next thing they do is travel to earthrealm to kill Liu Kang. It shows Liu Kang and Shang Tsung do battle for a couple of seconds and of course Liu Kang wins, however Liu Kang is not aware of Quan Chi, and Quan Chi launches a skull fireball to take Liu Kang out. Shang Tsung breaks Liu Kangs neck and he dies. So now the heroes must join forces with Raiden to take out the Deadly Alliance and to stop them from resurrecting the Dragon Kings undefeatable army.

Gameplay: 7/10

The gameplay has changed alot from the previous installations of MK games. There are now no characters that feel the same. Every character has 3 different sets of moves. 2 different types of martial arts, and a weapon. This adds alot of replay value and makes the characters unique, instead of just being different from their special moves. However there are some things that are missing from the action that you would just expect to be in the game and they are not there. Such as stage fatalitys and only 1 fatality per character, and alot of these fatalitys were incredibly lame. With the 3 different styles of fighting there also comes combos involving you switching fighting styles during a combo. But on the Gamecube version this can become incredibly annoying because the L and R buttons are not very responsive, because of their awkward design.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics are pretty good, no real complaints here. Although there is nothing to special about them either. I think the way the characters bleed sometimes can look a little corny.

Sound: 7/10

There are some problems with the sound for me. Some of the characters noises are incredibly irritating. The male characters consists of 2 different types and thats about it. I think the female have 2 aswell. The battle sounds just get repetitive after awhile. However the music on the other hand is pretty good, but there is not a wide variety in tracks. But there is 1 track in particular I really like.

Replay Value 8/10

This game can get boring on your own after you have done everything, but if you have a relative or a friend to play with, it can be really fun. This game is great to just pick up and go. This is a fun fighter game, and not a super competitive fighter. If you like competitive fighters then this may not be your best choice. But if your a MK fan you will be sure to enjoy it and unlocking all its hidden content in the krypt. There are 676 coffins for you to open and discover all the hidden items. Alot of it may seem stupid and useless, but its interesting nontheless, especially if your a big time fan.

Overall: 7.6/10

Overall this is a great fighter and anyone who is looking for a fun fighter game to play with friends should pick this one up. Especially if your a big fan of MK games. If your not a huge fan and are thinking about getting this particular one, I would just suggest Mortal Kombat Deception which is currently on the PS2 and XBOX, and coming to Gamecube in early 2005. Remember this review is for the Gamecube version of the game. I would give the PS2 version I higher score because the controls are alot better.
