The first Midway Arcade Treasures was a mixed bag. Out of 20 plus games, only a handful were worth playing. Unfortunately, Midway Arcade Treasures 2 also suffers from the same problem. It has a fair share of fun titles but we're left with too many duds.
The games in Midway Arcade Treasures 2 all look identical to their arcade counterparts. Unfortunately, most of the graphics for these games have not aged very well. The digitized graphics of games like Mortal Kombat and Pit Fighter look like cardboard cut outs, the dinosaurs from Primal Rage look like plastic action figures from the flea market, and Wizard of Wor looks awfully primitive. The videos are also pretty grainy and ugly.
The games all sound pretty similar to the originals but sometimes the music just completely stops playing. The first game also had this problem and Midway didn't even bother trying to fix it in this sequel. What's up with that? The worst part about the audio in this game is the sound from the videos. The sound is horrible and you can barely make out what the people in the videos are saying most of the time.
Most of the games work fine on the Gamecube's controller. It takes awhile to adapt to the small d-pad though. Some games however, such as Hard Drivin (which used a steering wheel), don't play too well on a controller.
Mortal Kombat 2 is the best of the series and is perfectly emulated in this collection. The only problem is that the computer is way too cheap and sometimes impossible to beat (probably because the arcade version was designed to suck money out of your pocket with it's difficulty). Mortal Kombat 3 is a step down from Mortal Kombat 2 with it's lame characters and dial-a-combos. Total Carnage is a semi-sequel to Smash TV (the best game from the first Midway Arcade Treasures). Gauntlet 2 is just as good as the first one and is a great multiplayer game. Rampage World Tour is fun for like 10 minutes and then it gets extremely repetitive. The best game in Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is NARC. NARC has always been one of my favorite arcade games and it is the reason that I bought this game in the first place. It's campy, cheesy, and a blast to play. The rest of the games in this package are dull and sometimes unplayable (Xenophobe/Pit Fighter).
Final Score- 7/10
This game worth it for the arcade perfect ports of NARC, Mortal Kombat 2, Total Carnage, and Gauntlet 2. The rest are best left forgotten. At $20 or less, you can't go wrong with this compilation.
