"One of the best in the Shining Series"
The Shining Force series are among the best Tactical RPGs out there. If you can find it, and if you can stand the Gamegear graphics, you may want to try:
Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
Story: (SF1 Spoilers)
At the end of the Original Shining Force, it shows Max and his robot Adam, settling down at a small farming village. This story starts off when Mishaela, servant of the now passed away Lord Darksol, is up to no good. Max, Adam, the Old Dwarf warrior Ridion and a party of youngsters confront her at a temple. Adam gets damaged in the fighting, and Max and Ridion set off after Mishaela. It is up to you, the new hero, to catch up with Max and find out what Mishaela is up to.
Gameplay: The Gameplay is identical to the Original Shining Force. You fight in different terrain and areas, all covered by a grid of squares. Certain characters are stronger physically, cast spells, have ranged attacks, or heal. Each character can level up to 20, or be promoted to a new class at level 10 and start over at level 1 again (With stronger weapons and attributes). There is no free roaming in this game, which is a disappointment. You only are able to speak to Adam, who raises and cures your party members after battles, and go into a shop to buy supplies.
Graphics: The graphics are surprisingly pleasing. The sprites are a bit plain, but it's easy enough to distinguish which character is which. The outdoor terrain is probably the nicest graphical feature, and can almost rival the Sega Genesis's pixelated terrain. The Character portraits are also excellent.
Sound: The music is completely different from the original Shining Force, however, the new tunes are very catchy and enjoyable. You get suspenseful music for tough fights, adventurous music for fights while traveling, and so on.
Rent or Buy: You probably wont find the game unless you buy it off an auction site or emulate it. It's hard to find now, but there are translated Roms out there.
Overall, it's a great game, a bit shorter than the original, but I suggest it for anyone that enjoys tactical RPG games.
