It's a member of the Zelda series. You know how good it is.



The Zelda games have to be one of the most popular gaming series around. Starring the brave adventurer Link, Zelda games have always been one of the bright sides of Nintendo. After the release of the SNES Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Nintendo die-hards were shocked when their favorite company announced that the next part of the Zelda legacy would be created for the Game Boy. Did it live up to its name? You betcha. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, as it was called, might just be the most popular Game Boy game to date, excluding Pokemon. So, did colorized graphics and new goodies keep The Legend of Zelda DX from being pushed aside? Well... let's see.

Gameplay - 10/10

Adventure/RPG hack and slash. Yah know, like Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy Adventure, in a way. However, unlike those games, the Zelda series lacks varied types of magic spells, but instead has numerous weapons and tools, such as the traditional hook-shot, which allows you to cling onto seemingly unreachable objects (somewhat like a rope), yer average nifty boomerang (yes, there IS a hidden boomering in this game), and, of course, bombs galore. In The Legend of Zelda DX, you'll come across eight mandatory, complete dungeons, each containing a new tool, a compass (which now makes a sound when you enter a room holding a key), a map of the area, keys that unlock doors, a boss (each called a ''nightmare''), a peice of heart (gives you another unit of health), an instrument, and various other items. The instruments are vital to the plot; Link must gather all eight instruments to wake the ''Wind Fish'' that inhabit the land this game takes place in (which isn't Hyrule). Well, no more plot spoiling for today.

Graphics - 10/10

Beautiful shades of color, great looking objects, tons of friends and fiends, tools, terrain... you get the point. I'm not the world's strictest critic for visuals, but, well, there isn't really much to complain about here. After all, it says ''Zelda'' on the package and it comes from Nintendo, so you can expect all-star art.

Sound - 10/10

... Still nothing to complain about. The intro music and field music are both traditional and inspiring (and yet come from a Game Boy speaker). When you go out exploring in the mountains, there's a track that brings hiking and adventuring to the mind; when you're raiding a castle or dungeon, there's mysterious musics that fit the atmosphere perfectly. Whoever created this soundtrack is obviously talented, and I know not one person who dislikes this classic's sound. Slashing and clashing swords, soaring of boomerangs, bomb explosions, ocarina music; let's face it, there's nothing at all to complain about, here. Not a thing.

Replay Value - 8/10

Well done. The new dungeon, trading of items (win the Yoshi doll at the crane game in the first town) from person to person until you reach the last, and photo place (you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there) give the game reason to come back and play if you've missed them before. However, there's no true desire to replay the game if you've already accomplished these trinkets during the first play.

How many $$$ shall I remove from my pocket?

Shell out what you'd pay for one of the best portable games around. All in all, The Legend of Zelda DX is a classic Adventure/RPG that definitely should not be missed.
