"A revolutionary game from back when Sega actually cared about their fans"
Sonic the Hedgehog is easily one of my favorite game series, right up there with Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive. Unfortunately, as of late, Sega seems to believe that releasing half-assed Sonic games games on Dreamcast (Sonic Adventure, Sonic Shuffle) is a good idea. So, the Sonic series has been going downhill for some time now. In fact, due to the incredibly amount of half-assed games on Dreamcast, Sega has lost millions of dollars, has stopped production of the hardware and will stop developing new Dreamcast games in about a year.
But I digress. Let's move away from the destruction of Sonic and back up to when he was in games that were actually FUN. Sonic the Hedgehog is proof that excellent game play is the key to success. Why has Sega forgotten this?
For a game released in 1991, the graphics are very good. All of the sprites are very detailed, and the backgrounds to the levels are very realistic as well. Unfortunately, there are a few graphical glitches. Plus, the sprites, as detailed as they are, are a bit bland and could use some color. Fortunately, all of these minor problems are nearly perfected in the sequels.
Sound FX: 8/10
A boing here, a crash there. Nothing is incredibly stupid, but nothing is totally special, either. The SFX are clear and do fit the adventurous feel of the game, however. Sadly, the SFX are never improved upon in any of the sequels.
Perfect! The tracks are incredibly catchy and do a great job of giving up a feeling of action. My favorite tracks are Marble Zone and Star Light Zone. STH easily has the best music in the entire Genesis series. In fact, I've noticed that the music slowly got worse and worse with each successive Sonic title.
Game Play: 10/10
Game play is the best feature of this game. It's simple, but still incredibly fun and addictive. The replay value is high, the controls are easy to understand, (you only need the D-Pad and one button!) and the challenge is right in the middle.
Use any method you can to get this game. Get the Genesis cartridge, Sonic Jam for Saturn, Sega Smash Pack for Dreamcast, a ROM for your Genesis emulator...just do what you can to own it.
