"Fist of the North Star (but censored)"

LAST BATTLE for the Sega Genesis

Known as Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) in Japan, Last Battle was one of the first Sega Genesis games. It was a side srolling platform/fighter hybrid that boasted some of the best graphics ever on the Genesis. It was also heavilly edited from its Japanese version, which detracted from the quality and fun of the game, just as editing the blood out of Mortal Kombat for the SNES did.

Graphics & Sound- 9.5: Even today people can appreciate this titles' graphics. They were very well drawn and you wouldn't know of the Genesis' color pallete handicap from looking at this game. The characters were large and the back grounds were excellent. The graphics on this game were even better than the Amiga version which boasted a larger color pallete.

Gameplay- 7: The control is good. However, the game is repetitive and extremely frustrating at many points. There was an element of strategy that was amusing but not expanded upon very much.

Funfactor- 6.9: The game could be alot of fun, but it lacked a two player mode, which every fighter should have. It was also repetitive and overly difficult in many areas. The removal of the blood from the game and the recoloring of the enemy sprites detracted from the appeal of this title. Let's face it, its fun to punch people and have them explode into blood and have thier heads pop off in video games, because you don't get to do it in real life.

Challenge / Replay value- 8: The game was definately challenging. However, there were stages that you just couldn't get passed unless you analysed the hell out of every possible angle at beating the level, and that takes the fun out of the game and introduces a level of tedium that the repetitive nature of the game does not compliment well.

Overall- 7: If this game had not been edited I would have given it an 8. Part of the appeal of violent games is the violence. At least the enemy characters don't throw daisies at you instead of knives. The graphics were wonderful, the game play was solid and challenging, and this was a title worth having for the Genesis. If yo ucan snatch it up at a flea market for a few dollars you will not be disappointed.
