The beginning to a series thats come a long way...
Serving as the first game of a huge series, Mortal Kombat was very good in its time (1991). It was released over various systems, including PC, Genesis, Arcade and Super Nintendo. All versions of this, the first edition, are very similar.
Horrible! And the Genesis's graphics aren't limited at all, considering that ''Sonic the Hedghehog'' was released that year too, with amazing graphics. Mortal Kombat's graphics are ugly, dark and choppy. Uglier than the original GameBoy's graphics stretched into fullscreen. Graphics do change the feel of the game, which is a little dissapointing, but, the Mortal Kombat games gets better graphics later in the series. 36%
A standard fighting game, with only 6 charachters, but the charachters have very interesting and powerful moves, the game also contains two bosses (Goro and Shang Tsung) who are well known and become standard charachters later in the series. Another thing that comes to mind is that there is no blood or gore in the game - something that the series is well known for! 94%
The music is good and catchy. The sound-bites are ****. When Shao Kahn is supposedly saying ''Flawless Victory'' it sounds as ''Fllllawwwwless Viccctory''. These flaws were fixed later in the series.
Sound: 51% Music: 95%
On this, the Genesis version, controls are average. The ROM controls are more comfortorable, and the Super Nintendo controls are about the same. 84%
There's a choice of difficulty in the options, it ranges from Very Easy - Very Hard. 89%
Buy or Rent?
Since it was the first in the very long and successful Mortal Kombat series, you may want to buy it if you're a fan. But, if you're looking for a decent beat 'em up, you might want to look elsewhere.
Liked this? Then you'll like these: Mortal Kombat 2 (Genesis, SNES), Mortal Kombat 3 (Genesis, PSX, SNES), Mortal Kombat 4 (PSX), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PSX), Mortal Kombat Gold (Dreamcast), Mortal Kombat 64 (N64), Mortal Kombat Mytholigies: Sub Zero (PSX).
-It started Mortal Kombat
-Great charachter moves
Like all classic Genesis games, its out of print. But, you may find a second hand copy lying around somewhere, and theres always the ROM if you can't find one.
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
