GRRRRRRRRRRREAT for a regular game, but not as good for a Sonic game.

This game is basically a Sonic game. Unlike other Sonic games, this does not rely on speed, but on strategy. You will probably be engrossed by it and play with it for hours on end. I played the one on Sonic Mega Collection for the Xbox and it was pretty fun.

Story: 10/10

The story is excellent. Little birdies, called Flickies, were roaming the island and living in peace. Then that troublesome Robotnick/Eggman finds out and finds out that he can use them for a devious plan. Sonic goes to visit the island and finds out they've been turned into robots. He gets angry and says that Robotnick did this and goes out to stop him and starts smashes the robots in his way. If you don't understand what I said, start up the game and it will tell you the story when you select the START option in the main menu after you press start.

Gameplay: 9/10

It's not speed based, but is certainly fun and enjoyable. You go around destroying enemies, collecting flickies that appear when you defeat a robot. There are a lot of the Sonic elements in this game, such as jumping, rings, power boxes and chaos emeralds.

Tails and Knuckles star in this game as well, although they just stand there. If you bring 50 rings to them, you get transported into a special stage. You just need to collect rings while avoiding spikeballs. You start off with a message saying COLLECT 50 RINGS, so you collect 50 rings before you pass a flag gate. When you collect 50 rings and get past the flags, a message says COLLECT 100 RINGS, so get your ring count to 100, and once you pass the flags, it says COLLECT 150 RINGS, get your ring count to 150. Once you pass the flags, you get a chaos emerald. If you don't get your ring count to the required count, you fail and you don't get anything except the ring bonus. Each of them have unique backgrounds depending which character you bring rings to: Knuckles has a volcano background and Tails has a sky background.

There are 7 levels(8 including the final boss). If you don't collect all the 7 chaos emeralds before the boss of the 7th level, you will get the regular ending. If you do, you will be thrust to the final level. Once you beat it, you will get the good ending.

Graphics: 10/10

The graphics are amazing. They look like full 3d graphics with thousands of polygons, but do you know what? They're 2D!!!! That's right, the game's completely in 2D!!!!! 2D!!!!! Well, except for the CGI intro movie right after you start up the game. The special stage use a lot of images, which they probably just made a 3d model of sonic, took lots of images of him and made them into sprites. The movement is VERY fluid.

Play time: 7/10

It will take a few hours to complete this game. If you're skilled, it will probably only take you an hour. For a perfect playthrough, I'd say it'll take 4 hours for a regular player and 2 hours for a skilled player.

As a regular game: 9/10

As a Sonic game: 4/10

As a collect-em-up: 7/10

Overall: 7.75/10

If you just want a fun and addicting game, choose this one. If you are a true blue sonic fan, you probably won't like it due to it's lack of platforming skills and speed. RENT OR BUY? Buy, because there are probably almost no stores that serve rental for this. Even though the Genesis was discontinued a long time ago, you can find it in some antique stores or on Sonic Mega Collection or on the Wii VC. Get it on Mega Collection: That has even better control than the Genesis/Megadrive version as you can move with the analog stick.

Rating:   4.0 - Great
