"One of the best releases on the Nintendo 64"

Pilotwings was one of the original releases with the Nintendo 64, and this game really showed you what the system could do. This game came bundled with my original Nintendo 64, and has always been cherished as one of my favorite games of all time.

Gameplay: 8/10
You have several different games to choose from. Hang-gliding is one of the first choices, in which you have missions to take pictures of certain buildings or to fly through the rings as fast as possible. You also have the gyro-copter, where you must destroy a certain number of targets with your gyro-copter's missiles or fly through a certain amount of rings. The last game is the jet pack. In this game your character has a jet pack on his back and he must land on different pads throughout the level, or try to bounce a ball, by running into it, into a gated area. Pilotwings also includes 3 bonus games for you to unlock, and includes a free-flying mode, where your character has on "wings", and they can fly around on their own and explore the islands.

Controls: 5/10
The controls are what make most of the challenges...well challenging. Sometimes the controls are way too touchy, and it's easy to over-correct your errors. Most games have very simple controls like: control to steer, A to take pictures, Z to fire missiles. Learning to fly each piece of equipment is all part of the game!

Graphics: 9/10
The graphics is what makes this game outstanding! For this to be one of the first releases for the Nintendo 64, it really put much use to the graphics engine. You three incredible 3D islands to explore, with little details every, including cities and other nice additions to the game. Sometimes there are some issues with the camera, and you can sometimes "fall" through things.

Sound: 8/10
There are two songs that play throughout the game, a happy, upbeat tempo plays during the day, which really goes with the mood. At night, a slower, more relaxed song plays. The gyro-copter has a constant engine sound, you can hear the wind while your hang-gliding, and the sounds of the jet on the jet pack.

This game was one of the best releases for the Nintendo 64, and should be in everyone's collection. The replay ability is amazing, as you can pretty much explore the islands forever. You'll never get tired of this game, the "free-flying" mode never gets old. Pilotwings 64 was a big step in the series and we can only hope for another one.
