Nintendo Called this Game Super Mario for a Reason
Nintendo released this game as the first ever 3D Mario game in 1996. Everyone's favorite plumber is back and ready to save the princess once more. This game really set the bar high for all the 3D games to come in the near future. Do you remember going through a 2D world, having to avoid enemy sprites and watching the calm background behind you? Well picture that, only in 3D, and you're basically looking at Super Mario 64.
You might have already guessed as to what the storyline for this game might have been. If you guessed that Bowser kidnaps the princess and you have to rescue her, then you guessed right! You start out with a letter from the princess saying that she has baked a cake for you, and Mario soon emerges out of a warp pipe out in front of the castle. However, there is one thing about this storyline that makes it so superior to most of the other storylines out there. The fact that you could get almost any star in any order allows you to almost create your own desired path to Bowser. This storyline is a one of a kind storyline, and it definitely deserves a rating to match its superiority.
The graphics for Super Mario 64 are simply outstanding. Nintendo faced a very difficult challenge attempting to make Mario into 3D. The graphics for this game are way better than you would expect from a game from 1996, also take into account the fact that this was Nintendo's first attempt at making a 3D game! The textures are very bright and colorful. This game's graphics are simply flawless, the only way to truly know what these graphics are like is to see them for yourself.
The controls were very good for Super Mario 64. This game uses an analog stick to control Mario in countless directions. The precision for controlling Mario is insanely high. Using an analog stick like the one Nintendo made really gives a great and natural feel of how Mario is moved. The camera angle can get on your nerves from time to time, but you usually can adjust the camera to your liking. You can even go into a first person view of Mario! Another thing that is good about Super Mario 64 is the fact that there is a wide variety of jumps. Overall Nintendo did a great job adapting to the world of 3D gaming with their controls.
This game has some very memorable music. The music in this game was intended to match Mario's surroundings, and Nintendo succeeded at that. Some of the tunes, unfortunately, were played in more than one stage, and that wasn't the best thing for this game. You can almost always recognize this music after you hear it a few times. This wasn't the greatest thing about Super Mario 64, but the music was very fitting with the theme of the course that you were in.
The gameplay for this game was simply phenominal. There is an endless variety of things you can do in this game. If you like blasting out of cannons, surfing on a koopa shell, flying, walking underwater, and being able to go through certain walls, then you will love this game. Super Mario 64 offers all that, and more. One of the main aspects of this game is the fact that for most courses, you have to jump into a painting to reach the desired course. You have to complete missions that give you stars. If you are confused on a mission, look at the name of the star you're seeking. It will give you a good hint as to what you have to do. Nintendo really did a good job adding such diversity to this game.
This was easily the greatest thing about Super Mario 64. Even after getting every star, this game is not over yet. There are numerous races that you can try to beat using different methods for the fastest possible time. There are also many tricks you can use to beat the game with fewer stars than normal. Maybe you want to do a speedrun of this game someday. I have been playing this game since 1997, I got all the stars shortly after, and I have played this game for years afterwards. This game will have you longing to come back to it for many years to come.
Due to the fact that this is the first ever 3D game, it made a difference for the rest of te video games out there. It set the bar high for the rest of the video games out there. Due to the fact that you will probably be playing this game for a long time, I would suggest buying this game, and not renting it, as you won't have time to really enjoy all that this game has to offer.
