"A good start to the series"

The year is 1997, and your looking for a new FPS to play on your Nintendo 64. Look no further, because Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is here. Based on the comic book series from the 50's, Turok, brought FPS's to a whole new level. Here's my review on Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the N64.


Turok, a time-travelling warrior ends up in a mysterious jungle known as the ‘Lost Lands'. Meanwhile, an evil being known as the ‘Campaigner', is trying to find a device called the Chronoscepter, a magical weapon in which contains the power to destroy the barriers of time and become the ruler of the universe. Turok on the other hand, plans to retrieve the Chronoscepter by finding all of the pieces scattered around the Lost Worlds, to destroy it and put a stop to the Campaigner's deadly scheme, once and for all. Very lacking and a bit disappointing when compared to the unstopping might of the comic series.


Great, at the time it really did take the power of the Nintendo 64 to the limit, and did a great job of showcasing the Nintendo 64's graphical capabilities. The game's character models look good, each with unique textures and move fluently and realistically. There's a huge amount of detail put into the game's levels, and each of the levels have a different and distinctive look and feel to them. The background textures look great, and the game's enemy death sequences look amazing and you'll hardly ever see an enemy die the same way. Poachers will grab at their bleeding neck as you fire your pistol at them, before dropping to the ground . Raptors will screech in terror as a rain of bullets puncture their skulls before falling to the ground, thrashing, while blood showers everywhere. Pretty Gruesome really, but definitely something that makes the game stand out in the crowd of all of the other Doom clones.

The game's effects also look excellent, from the blood splattering on the wall as you slice at your enemy with a combat knife, to the huge explosion after launching your enemies up into the air with a grenade launcher, To the massive blinding light of the Chronoscepter blast. It's all great, and it looks absolutely spectacular in motion.

One major flaw is the amount of fog in the game. I can understand that this method was used to keep the framerate going at a steady pace, but, you just can't help feeling how much more apparent it is when compared to other popular Nintendo 64 FPS's such as Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and even the later instalments in the Turok franchise. It doesn't really effect gameplay, other then a bit of mild irritation.


For the most part, the game's music is quite good and has a certain charm to it, and fit's the game's setting quite well. In the earlier stages of the game in the jungle, there is little to no music. Although in later stages such as the Catacombs and the Lost Land, the music starts to pick up a bit. Although the game includes almost no voice acting (Unless you count “I am Turok!”, as ‘voice acting'), but this is understandable considering the technical powers of the Nintendo 64. The Sound effects, are also very good. The Gunshots all sound realistic, and the roaring raptors, are two very good examples of the sound effects in the game, although the soundtrack is really nothing out of the ordinary.

There are eight levels in the game, which can be accessed from the completion of the first level. The Game's basic objective is to go around the levels collecting keys, and killing all of those that get in your way. Keys can be used to unlock portals to more levels, and the game repeats itself in this sort of fashion, Occasionally you'll come across bosses, which will lead up to the final boss.

So your probably thinking, collecting keys, killing enemies, collecting keys, killing a boss, killing enemies… hey doesn't this become repetitive? Well it does, but luckily enough, the weapons balance it out a bit. Probably one of the best things about the Turok franchise is the weapons. Turok begins the game with only the Knife and the Bow and Arrow, although as you make your way through the game, you'll be able to find more. Preserving and conserving ammo is very important, learning when and where to use it is very important, especially when coming up to a boss battle. Considering that the Chronoscepter (the games most powerful weapon) can only be fired three times.

The gameplay is actually very simular to the Doom series (but not quite as good), expanding on the gameplay with the ability to jump and swim. Simple platforming, may require you to jump from ledge to ledge, swimming is a minor element in the game, but underwater combat allows you to swipe at enemies as they swim by.

Unfortunately there is no multiplayer, which is something that was fixed later in the series.


Turok, created the control system of that was eventually used in games like Goldeneye 007. The Control stick is used to aim, while the C-buttons are used to strafe and move around. Shooting is done by pressing the Z button. Jumping is done with R. Crouching can be done by tapping the down button. A and B are used to choose between weapons. Very good, although tough to get used to.

- Great Graphics.
- Fun and Addictive gameplay.
- Well designed levels and weapons.
- Nice Sound Effects.
- Fans of the comics will love this.


- Gameplay gets a little repetitive after a while.
- Mediocre Soundtrack.
- Fog, irritating but definitely doesn't effect the gameplay much.
- Uninteresting storyline.

In Conclusion

Overall, a very good game only let down by repetitive gameplay a rather generic soundtrack and the massive fog. Definitely worth the $5-10 or so that you'd be able to buy it for online, and a must-have for FPS fans and fans of the comic book series. Ultimately, I'd definitely recommend the game.
