Wacky Races really surprised me. I expected to play a racing game and got
a platformer. But once my surprise had faded, I must admit the game is
very enjoyable. The game is very fun and heck, Muttley by himself makes the
     game very interesting.
Anyway, this is only a FAQ covering the basics of the game as well as
tips and hints which should help you in beating the game. The game is very
linear, you don't need a walkthrough to beat it. Besides, it isn't even
that difficult to beat and is dealt with quite quickly. Have fun!
Warning: Wacky Race is a platformer, not a racing game! You play as Muttley
and each time Dastardly will send him on "missions" which will make our
poor friend grumble. The game is divided into 3 stages which are, in turn,
broken down into levels at follows:
     A) Hip Hop ---------------------- [3 levels: A-1, A-2, A-3]
     B) Splish Splash ---------------- [3 levels: B-1, B-2, B-3]
     C) Go Go America ---------------- [4 levels: C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4]
You may start with whichever stage you want but as someone who's played
the game a lot of times, I would advise you to do them in their real order
(A, B, and finally C) because otherwise, you'll encounter a lot of problems
     and will eventually lose.
Of course, you can then play them in the order you like after you've beaten
the game once and see if you can put up with the challenge! =)
Here are the controls in Wacky Races.
     Down - Crouch
     Left - Move back
     Right - Move forward
     A - Jump
B - Use weapon (if any)
SELECT - Pick option in menu bar
Start - Pause game (press again to resume)
Wacky Races has a very interesting concept whereby you collect bones
and you get options like weapons or life-ups as you do so. The bones
are scattered in every level and come in plentiful, so you shouldn't
worry too much about those. Once you have enough bones to choose a
better item, an arrow wil show in the menubar and if you wish to use it,
you just have to press SELECT. Of course, there is no need to do so and
you can skip it and collect even more bones to gain the better item. The
     choice is up to you!
Here's how the menubar is and what each icon enables:
                  | BOMB | BOW | WING | HEART |
                  | | | | |
                   ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
BOMB - Allows Muttley to throw bombs at enemies.
     BOW - Linear projectile (BOW).
WING - Allow you to fly. To do so, press B once to jump and keep tapping
the button. Muttley will use his tail to hover around. This option
will remain with Muttley until he dies.
HEART - Refills health and adds one heart to lifebar (you can only have
a maximum of 6 hearts though).
You need one bone to move on to the next item. However, once you choose to
use whichever item you can access, you have to start at the first slot
     again and collect more bones.
There are only a couple of items to collect in the game.
CRYSTAL - Collect 100 of those and you'll receive a life-up. There are
plenty of those in each level.
BONE - Collect one to move one slot across the menu found at the bottom
                of the screen.
     MUTTLEY - Life-up (quite scarce).
I have broken this section by stage since there are different hints and
stuff you need to know for each world.
     A) HIP HOP
     ~ A-1 ~
     * You can jump over the houses in the first section. Jump over those to
reach the higher crystals and bones.
     * Use bombs against the snails.
     * You don't automatically die when you fall on spikes. Instead, you'll
lose one heart and Muttley will hop in place as he seems to become
invisible. Jump to safe ground quickly to prevent your life from being
       completely depleted.
     ~ A-2 ~
     * Make sure you get the Wing option early on. This way, you'll be able to
fly over most of the quicksand (these can be a real pain in the ass!).
     * Once you're caught in the quicksand, tap A repeatedly to get out of it
and to jump forward. Don't merely walk!
     * Keep an eye on the clock, no goofing around in this level.
     * To avoid the cactus, jump at a certain distance and fly over them.
     * Make sure to collect the bone before you enter the pyramid, it's located
       above the fourth brick.
     * Don't go too quickly once inside the pyramid. There are weights that fall
in certain spots and these make Muttley go slower if he's hit.
     ~ A-3 ~
     * Go for the Wing option first.
     * Take out the snakes with the bombs. It's harder to hit them with the
       other weapon.
     * You can jump over certain branches and trunks.
     * The spiked enemies cannot be killed. Fly over them to avoid them.
     ~ B-1 ~
     * Take out the frogs with bombs.
     * Try to remain on the upper ledges all the time.
     * The sharks cannot be killed. To avoid those, you should always jump at
       the higher bridges.
     * Do not hesitate to backtrack for the sole purpose of accessing the
       highest bridge.
     ~ B-2 ~
     * Note: Muttley will rise by himself in the water when you don't press any
button. Be careful since he may touch the spikes as he does so.
     * Note: Press A here to move faster.
     ~ C-1 ~
     * Most importantly, don't go on too quickly and be careful when jumping
       because of the slippery ground.
     * Use your bombs to get rid of the jumping snowmen as you progress - these
can be a real pain in the ass if you're not careful enough.
     * Watch out for the oncoming snails when you reach the clouds and start
NOTE: Pressing the jumping button doesn't do anything while you are on
the clouds, i.e. no high jump! =(
     ~ C-2 ~
     * You can jump on the posts and on the doors to reach the roofs of the
     * Try to keep on the houses, you'll easily avoid most of the enemies thus.
     * Be careful of the cats, they can get very annoying since you almost
       always land on them.
     ~ C-3 ~
     * You can jump on the hatches to reach the items.
     * No, you cannot jump on the rocks! ;(
     * But you can walk on the chains and carts! :)
     ~ C-4 ~
     * Doesn't the blue enemy -like a mechanical jaw- remind you of something? :)
Too bad, it can't be destroyed in Wacky Races too...
     * To avoid the big rocks, either jump above it or jump on another ledge.
Jumping is rather tough, look around if there are any safe ledges first.
     * Be careful when jumping by the waterfalls, a fish will jump out. To avoid
those, jump but quickly land on the same side and from there, kill the
Each boss needs to be defeated 2 times so you can move on. Hence, each
boss strategy is broken down into 2 parts.
     A) HIP HOP
     ~ A-1 ~
     -: Part I :-
He'll jump in the same place, fire at you, jump to the other side and repeat
the pattern over and over again. Simply crouch, jump or do whatever you
want to avoid the projectile. When he changes side, move to the middle of
the screen and stay there, he'll miss you.
     -: Part II :-
This time, instead of jumping, he'll move forward. But he'll still jump
once he reaches 3/4 the screen distance and that's just how you can win.
When he starts to move, position yourself so that he will jump over you.
     Otherwise, he's not that hard.
     ~ A-2 ~
     -: Part I :-
Simply make sure the missiles never touch you and when the tank advances,
let Muttley sink and get up behind the tank. Of course, this is quite a
risky thing to do but it's impossible to jump over that damn tank.
     -: Part II :-
This time, its missiles can do 2 things: they will either raise up and fall
down again before going off-screen or they will "bounce" forward. The
second one is hard to avoid because of the marshes. The tank may also jump
but it will do so very rarely. Just let Muttley sink again! =)
     ~ A-3 ~
     -: Part I :-
The truck will just move on and it'll sometimes jump at the edge of the
screen. Just crouch in the lower ledges and it will pass over Muttley
when it moves. Note however that it will sometimes jump just above the lower
ledge. When it does that, get out of the ledge because it'll drop a bomb.
Use your weapon as it jumps or after it has passed over Muttley.
     -: Part II :-
It can now use a bomb which will travel everywhere, even on the trees.
They're easy to avoid though, you just need to jump. It can also jump and
shoot as Muttley from above and again these are very easy to avoid. The
truck will move forward once and after reaching the other side, it'll
quickly retrace its steps. Crouch in the gaps and you'll do fine.
     ~ B-1 ~
     -: Part I :-
The cart will travel at a very leisurely pace and will jump on the upper
ledge quite often but its motion is very predictable. It is possible to
just jump over when it is moving on the upper ledge. Very easy!
     -: Part II :-
Same pattern but it'll move very quickly now and it can suddenly change
its course and backtrack when you're not expecting it. To easily defeat it,
just stay on the upper ledge and throw bombs down at it. Since you're above,
you'll find it easier to avoid.
     ~ B-2 ~
     -: Part I :-
The mad scientist will only move about both on the ground and up and at
times, it will jump across the screen. Place Muttley such that the boat
passes over Muttley and you'll have nothing to worry about.
     -: Part II :-
This time, it'll move faster and once it's up, it'll also fire a bomb at
Muttley which isn't that hard to avoid.
     ~ B-3 ~
     -: Part I :-
She'll jump from right to middle to left, etc... Once she's in the middle,
she'll hop and use her weapon. Avoid those and bombs away as she lands
     and when she's moving.
     -: Part II :-
Practically the same pattern except that she'll use her weapon more often
and she jumps much quicker than before. Avoid the bombs and shoot at her.
You can try getting her when she's moving but don't expect that to work
     very often.
     ~ C-1 ~
     -: Part I :-
This one's rather hard because of the slippery ground. The plane will fire
missiles from time to time and after a while it'll move across the screen
twice. It'll then drop down and repeat the same pattern. When it remains
on one side of the screen and fires the missiles, avoid those and throw
your bombs at it. Keep on the ground when it travels in the upper part
and as it drops down to travel on the ground, jump on the brick in the
     -: Part II :-
Surprisingly enough, the second part is easier to beat! It will just
travel across the screen but note that it can now go even higher up. Simply
avoid it as it move, using the middle brick, and keep shooting at it.
You'll destroy it in no time.
     ~ C-2 ~
     -: Part I :-
The car will move about and fire iron balls from time to time. Avoid those
by going to the far edges of the screen and don't hesitate to jump on
the upper layer and to drop down while shooting at it as soon as you can.
     -: Part II :-
This time, it'll move faster and it can jump to the upper layer too. Be
prepared to jump and drop down a lot here and throw everything you have
at it. Thankfully, it doesn't take much to collapse.
     ~ C-3 ~
     -: Part I :-
The first part doesn't have any weapon. It'll just move about and jump
from time to time. Nothing hard!
     -: Part II :-
The second part has a weapon and can jump awkwardly to hit Muttley. Make
use of the upper layers and keep jumping from one to another to avoid
its projectiles. Drop down as soon as it jumps and shoot at it from where
     you are.
     ~ C-4 ~
     -: Part I :-
The brothers will move about in their prehistoric car and will attack you
with their weapon. They'll also jump about and you just have to walk
beneath them when they do so.
     -: Part II :-
They'll be much quicker and use their weapons more frequently - they now
have a new weapon where they'll shoot a leaf which will move forward.
Both are quite easy to avoid but watch out for their heptic jumps. They
don't take much to die though.
You'll see the funny ending after beating them! Enjoy!
¤ Secret area in Hip Hop A-1 ¤
When you are in the castle and must drop down the hole to reach the next
section, don't do so yet. Continue to the right instead and you'll find
you can pass through the wall. You'll reach a new area which contains 4
crystals, 2 bones and 1 life-up as well as an enemy.
     ¤ Easier boss fights ¤
This isn't really a secret -- more of a hint but it's better to put it
here. To mkae boss battles easier, try to encounter the bosses with the
arrow in the menu bar on the third slot. There's always one bone when
you fight against a boss. Now, you just need to take it and you can refill
     your health when you're low.

      Q & A
Here are the answers to some of the questions that you may ask yourself.
Q1: How many lives can I accumulate throughout the game?
A1: Assuming you never die, collect all the crystals and life-ups, you can
have about 20 lives by the end of the game.
Q2: Can I play as Dastardly?
A2: Sadly, no. There aren't even codes for this.
Q3: If the game is so linear, why write a FAQ for it?
A3: If the game is so linear, then why are you reading it...? :) No, it's
just that if I get a game and it has no guides, I do my best to write
         one for it.
Q4: Are there more Wacky Races game?
A4: Yes, but they're all racing games. I truthfully can't say much more.
I have only played the demo of the PS2 game and it didn't look great.
Actually, it _only_ looked great. The gameplay was crap.
