Slalom was the first NES game that was made outside of Japan, specifically by Rare in their UK offices. Rare designed the game as a technological demo to show to Nintendo of America after initially being turned away as possible software publishers for the NES. When Nintendo of America saw Slalom, however, they changed their minds, and immediately offered to publish the game in the United States and Europe for Rare. This began a long partnership between Nintendo and Rare.
