"A classic RTS that demands to be played."

Total Annihilation is a classic RTS game which was released several years ago, which was back in 1997. It is still one of my favorite RTS games of all time.

The story in this game is very simple. There are two huge groups of bots in the universe (Arm and Core). Both teams are attempting to wipe each other out to take over the universe and they've been fighting for over 4000 years. This story takes place in the campaign missions in the game. You get to choose your side. Arm has 25 missions, and Core has 25 missions. 50 total. They have certain objectives like ''capturing the galactic gate to gain entrance to the next planet'', or ''wipe out all Arm/Core forces''. The missions are a lot of fun, but sometimes tedious too, because the game is very slow paced. However, you can increase the game speed with them + and - keys on your keyboard to speed up the action! But the game does slow down a bit once you make the speed faster.

The gameplay is very good. There are so many units to choose from. You have to build factories to build them (like in most RTS games). There are planes, anti-aircraft weapons, tanks, K-Bots, navy ships, submarines, and even Spider Tanks! There is some requirements to make those units. You start out with some energy and metal to build them, but you need to build factories to help your economy from bombing, or there will be a problem.

There is also online multiplayer,. Up to ten people can play on a certain map. You can set up your own rules, and chat with others. This is a great addition to the game.

Graphics: 9/10

These graphics are absolutely stunning when this game was released back in 1997. They look great, but there is some slowdown problems.

Sound: 9/10

Great sound. The music is repetitive, but you can turn that stuff off. I like the game better without music. The sound effects are very good though.

Control: 10/10

Getting used to controls to RTS games is a bit of a problem, but the controls in this game are very responsive and is easy to use. You can select as many units as you want, and you can send all of them into battle. You can also use the Alt+(any number) keys to set up your own squads.

Story: 9/10

It isn't a deep, inspiring story, but it is still a good one.

Gameplay: 10/10

Great gameplay! All the units have a different type of weapon to use against their enemies. They are designed really well, and there are so many options to choose from for your units. The gameplay in this game is very deep.

Replayability: 10/10

Although there isn't much unlockables, there are plenty of maps to choose from for skirmish and online multiplayer. There are 50 campaign missions too, so there is a lot of replay value in this game.

+Great gameplay
+Awesome Graphics (for the time)
+Awesome Sounds
+Lots of replay value

-Repetitive music
-Story could be a tad more exciting

Final Thoughts

This is a great RTS game that not many people have played. You can find this game at around 5 to 15 bucks. It is worth it if you are into RTS games. If you aren't into RTS games, you should still play this game. I highly recommend buying this, and the expansions packs (Core Contingency and Battle Tactics). Seriously though, this is one of the best RTS games you'll play.
