The PC version of a popular Dreamcast (and now Xbox and Gamescube) action RPG. Once SEGA went 3rd party PSO went to home consoles and PC. I find this game to be very fun, but mainly if played online.
While now these graphics are improved on Xbox and GC, they are still quite impressive. The character models are fairly well done, but seem a bit blocky. If you experience a slow down the game can be a real drag, literally, and online you will lag and won't be able to keep up others on your team. Of course, like any game on PC video and sound options can be changed if you have a slower or faster computer. This makes magic spells look okay, good, or great.
The controls in this game are very annoying when you first play. The number pad is used to move and it is a pain, but it doesn't really take too long to adapt to them. Four arrow keys are used to attack. The default configurations make left-strong, slow, inaccurate attack, right-heal, and down-weak, fast, accurate attack. There arent any problems here, EXCEPT the way your character moves. He/she walks two steps then runs. Now this gets extremely bothersome when combined with characters that don't exactly turn well. It's like this: walk, run, turn, walk, run, repeat. Running isn't as bad as I may make it seem though.
Think Zelda. Now think Zelda with experience levels. The action RPG genre of game is not used enough. PSO has a lot of weapons and a good magic system. Running around for hours fighting monsters with your online buddies just doesn't get old. In terms of growing levels, you will be doing this for a long time. Your character starts at level one and the max level is 200! That could take a while. PSO also boasts many weapons. Along with the weapons there are small creatures that float around with you, which called mags. Mags are interchangeable and many are to be found.
Good sound, great music. The sound is mediocre, but the music is somewhat better than most other games. It won't be a long time before you get hooked on this music and start to love it.
This game was made for multiplayer. Single play will become boring, but playing with other makes the experience so much better. If you own this game and don't play online you should stop playing alone and kill some monsters with other people.
Overall (not an Average) 8/10
PSO is a great action RPG that will keep you busy for hours on end. Great gameplay, music, graphics and multiplayer make Phantasy Star Online THE game to own.
Rating: 4.0 - Great
