Kicking butt in the city
City of Heroes is a wonderful mmorpg for the PC. If you find the idea of running around in tight, cheap spandex appealing, then this game was made for you.
Game Play: 10/10
The game play, while simplistic, is addicting. The basis for battling foes is "target" then click on the attack you want to use. While some could say there is a bit of strategy involved, for the most part it's easy, mindless fun. Though, be warned, the game can be quite difficult. There are loads of tough enemies roaming the streets in small packs. But that's when you thank god for the multi-player aspect of the game, for there's always somebody nearby you can join up with or call to for help.
There's not really a story involved in this game, though there are many quests and tasks to be taken on offered by various contacts you'll meet throughout the city. Most prove to be quite challenging and greatly enhance the fun factor.
One of the downsides I've run into though is the control. Navigating your character using the keyboard controls can be quite difficult at times. Getting stuck behind walls is the norm. It becomes increasingly frustrating in dark places. Some areas are so dark that you can't see anything but your character, and you'll frequently find yourself stuck in corners or between crates which can be very disheartening to the beginner. Getting fully comfortable with the controls may take some, but one should pick up on the basics fairly quickly and easily.
The game has some great music and sound effects. The sounds your super hero abilities make sound like something right out of the cartoons (very super hero-ish!), and I especially love how the music changes as you cross through different areas of the city. It adds to the excitement and prevents any one tune from becoming overly annoying.
The graphics are quite impressive, although, the system requirements are quite demanding, and if you have a dial-up connection and your computers not up to par with current technology then this game might not be the best choice for you, as it will undoubtedly look bad and play worse.
If your pc meet the requirements, I strongly recommend picking up this game if you don't have it already. Simply put, it's a blast to play, time consuming, and just as new and exciting the second time through as it was the first.
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
