This game takes me back. I was very young when it came out and my dad played it. I couldn't even hack the beginning questions so I kept on guessing for hours to get in, only to fail to get further than the door of Lefty's Bar. As I grew older the game kept it's place on the hard disk of the aging computer. I learnt the controls, language and finally wrote down the answers to the age questions. Of course I also knew more by then and could answer some by myself.
So, looking back at this ancient game, how does it rate?
Pretty good stuff, at the time there were no graphic input games and this is all taken from the text only game called "Softporn". You control Larry and go through many areas. It is easy but often frustrating to learn you can die in so many places by making mistakes. Often you save and notice there was something you ought to have done. The staff says you should save often and on different slots but that still makes it hard. However, once you get a hang of the game you'll get around town in no time. Of course the biggest factor this game is so good, the humour. The comedian alone in the cabaret will get you laughing, but the jokes surround Larry's adventure are spot on.
This is obviously based on the time it was released. There are some beautiful close-up shots from the women when you talk to them and overall the city locations are presented neatly. At the time nobody cared about big pixels anyway. Sure the VGA version is better graphically but that was years later.
The classic tune is unforgettable, and many sound effects are very good. The lack of proper sound support is the hardware's fault and those loud speaker screeches should be forgiven.
A classic game that spawned many sequels. I suggest you also check out LSL2 and 3 which are in the same style. The rest of the series are very much indifferent but still worth a look if you are a fan.
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
