Can you use a Hwelett Packard recovery disc on Compaq pc/?

  1. Since they are the same company and both are vista home premium 32

Reason being is my hard drive got broke when I move so I bought another so need to reinstall vista and have a legit COA and saw the discs very cheap on ebay from a trusted seller but were HP discs.

Thanks but do you think it will activate? I dont care about the bloatware as I will delete it all anyway and install what I want

  1. Assuming that the hard drive is empty, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to install the HP disks on your Compaq computer. The only thing is that the HP disks most likely won't have the proper drivers for your computer, and the included bloatware will be different from what came with your Compaq originally.

I would suggest just getting a clean copy of Windows Vista and installing that on your hard drive. It will work just the same as when you originally had your Compaq except it will be without the useless pre-installed software. You will have to download your drivers separately, but that's as easy as going to the Compaq website and looking up your model number.

Another solution, and probably the best one at that, would be to contact Compaq customer service. Request for a replacement CD for your computer. More then likely they'll send you the proper CD at only shipping cost.

  1. No. Recovery discs are tailor-made for a particular computer model. Using one recovery disc on a different computer will cause strange things to happen.

For HP/Compaq, check their support web site for an additional copy of the recovery disc set for the Compaq PC:

Type in the Compaq model number, then click on the "Order parts" link. HP calls it a "Recovery Kit".

  2. Even if it did work, I'd recommend you just reformat the whole thing.
