Setting the bar again.
This game completely blows previous GTA's out of the water. It's a huge improvement over Vice city. Instead of featuring a city crammed on to an island San Andreas is an entire state with three major cities and plenty of land in between.
A moderate improvement over it's predecessor. Its a huge improvement over the PS2 version of this game. There are quite a few areas of the map that are rather bland. It ruins the effect of you being in an actual living environment that the developers tried so hard to make. Water is very simple. There are a lot of things that just "pop" up. This is really noticeable when you're driving in the country and watching the foliage appear. Overall the graphics look dated.
The radio stations are excellent. The sound effects have been improved. The voice acting is outstanding. However, pedestrian conversations are really dumb. most of them don't make much sense. They also come off as a really bad way to push humor. The game is a real treat for the ears.
Game play: 10/10
Where to begin... The missions this time around have much more variety. There are tons of side missions. You can finally swim. There's a workout system that allows you to visit a gym to keep in shape. The game keeps track of your progress through certain things. The more you work out the more you look built up. The more you drive a bike the better you get at it. Things like that.
Planes are now an important part of game play. The flying controls have been reworked to make flying much more realistic. There are a lot more cars then previous versions. Some cars can be taken to a custom body shop and get outfitted like the cars in "The Fast and the Furious". With all the side missions and hidden items it could take over a month for a beginner to finish this game. Even after that there's still hundreds of ways to have fun.
The main story is excellent. It follows you throughout the game and is told bit by bit. There are also many side stories that mesh in nicely with the main one. My only complaint is the game starts off with the usual "dirty copy frames someone to work for him" story.
The Verdict: 9.8/10
This is a great game. It should keep you entertained for a long time.
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
