"Is this really Sparta?"

Ancient Wars: Sparta is a game based on the history of the ancient ages and their main nations. Spartans, Persians and Egyptians are fighting for influence around Little Asia, Europe and North Africa. Historical correct timeline is 700-300 BC and the action takes place with different campaigns for all three races.

So I went pass a game shop and saw this game. Thought that it is quite an interesting rpg game so I bought it.

Gameplay 6/10

Do not expect a very good gameplay from this game, it is just a very normal rpg game. On the first look, you can tell that it is very similar to Warcraft 3. You will be controlling a 'hero' character and when he levels up, you can learn a new skill or add skill level to an already learned skill. The hero is able to learn three different skills. Of course good micromanagement is needed just like in any rpg game. There are three different campaigns which you can start with, Spartans, Persians and Egyptians. Each has their own storyline and you control different main character. If you have played previous rpg games like Starcraft and Warcraft, you should be able to get a good control of the game within minutes and it should be fairly easy for you. What is disappointing is the variety in units and buildings that can be produce by the different nations.

Story 5.5/10

As I've mentioned, each nation you picked has their own story. If you're someone who is into history, it should keep you entertained for a while. If you're not, then it will be pretty boring for you. They storyline is also one of the main component that keeps you playing and the game going. But I have to agree that the storyline can be improved.

Graphics/Sound 6/10

The graphics and sound are also quite disappointing. Even thought this game was out at 2007, it seems to have the graphics and sound of Age of Empires 2. More effort should be put in to improve this as it is one of the main component that players will consider when buying a game. During the cut scene between each mission, the screen is just a stationery picture with conversations going on at the top and bottom of screen. They could have at least have some animations going on as in Warcraft 3. There are also alot of spelling and grammer mistakes in the conversations. However with all that being said, this game does not need a very high end system to support. Even an average laptop should be able to handle it so it will be nice to spend some time gaming on the go.

Play Time/Replayability 6/10

The main focus of the game is the campaign mode. How long it takes to complete them will depend on the player and the difficulty the AI is set to. After you've done all the campaigns, there are also a few maps which you can play with the AI under the custom map button. Multiplayer and LAN gaming are also avaliable in this game.

Final Recommendation

So after all the talk, the main question is 'should I get this game?' Well, it depends on you. If you want a lightweight and fairly alright rpg game on the go, I say go for it. Otherwise, you should just leave it because there are alot better rpg games out there which is worth your money.
