"A great game in it's own right"
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is, for those who don't know, a game that plays out many large battles from the Star Wars saga and adds background stories to said battles.
Graphics - 9/10
The graphics are simply beautiful to look at. Better yet, they mimic the environments seen in the movies almost perfectly, too. With the flashes of blaster fire going to and from your defended position and the explosion blasts from thermal detonators, wrist rockets, heavy rockets, and vehicle weaponry, the fight scenes are incredible and inspiring to look at. While there are no dismemberment of limbs when playing as a Jedi, you'll soon find out that it's a decent trade-off for having thousands of bodies/droids crashing to the ground. What's better is that everything that takes damage can show it over time. Vehicles start smoking, starfighters vent fuel (though you don't have any limit to it), and star cruisers vent atmosphere at critical points.
Gameplay - 9/10
The gameplay is also near perfect. With each and every single infantry class (with the exception of Jedi, of course) able to zoom in once (and twice for snipers) the game is that much more easy to get critical shots off of. What's more, the ammo in most ammo weapons and the overheat threshold for no-ammo weapons is quite balanced. It prevents anyone on either side from going out and taking out each and every single enemy just by rapid-shooting anything that moves.
As for the actual fights, they're also very well done. With the enemy coming toward you in a very Star Wars-ish fashion, the AI is dumb enough to charge toward you or stand still to fight (a-la Geonosis battle from Episode 2). What's more, Friendly Fire is activated by default in battle, making the battles that much more difficult to get through because you have to mind your surroundings and who is around you. What's more, you also have to mind the fire of your own troops and avoid running across the front of your troops that are engaged in long-range repeat fire.
The Galactic Conquest function is greatly improved, with some missions not requiring that you take out every single enemy. Rather, it requires taking out certain key elements of star cruisers or their supply ships.
As for the menus, they're my only gripe. With no info bubbles on what the heck each function or option does (it's even vague in the manual). What's worse, some of the menus lag a tad bit. The best example of this is the Galactic Conquest battles when you're buy bonuses or training units, another being when you scroll the unit you want to spawn as at a CP.
Music - 10/10
The musical score is very inspiring. With all of the most exciting music from the movies and some touch ups to Battlefront 1 tracks, the musical score takes the cake over most other games I've seen out there.
The sound effects are also just as fun to hear. When in full battle, it truly sounds like you're in a melee of ground combat fighters, complete with vehicles exploding and both you and your enemies screaming out orders or in pain (when they die). An interesting and funny tidbit is to hear battle droids say their signature "Uh Oh" if they turn a corner only to see tons of your troops around it.
Story - 10/10
While most FPS games have little or absolutely no story, even those who boast that they DO have storylines, this one takes the cake. With a mix of both familiar battles and book-described ones, the background to any campaign battle is well explained. While you don't get this type of background in Galactic Conquest and Instant Play modes, it's not exactly required.
Let's just say that it can last a lifetime. Or at the least last until you get tired of playing.
Same here: It can last forever. You can play out every single battle as one of at most 6 or 7 units, plus you can play space fights, vehicle battles, etc.
Try then buy. It just so happens that there are a few computers that have problems with launching this game so it's a good idea that you try installing this game from a friend (no piracy folks, piracy kills game companies!) and see if it works. If it does, definitely buy it.
Final Score - 9/10
