Damage Reduction and Resistances?

  1. How does damage reduction and the different resistances work? Do they work together or is damage reduction for regular attacks and the resistances cover special attacks?

Accepted Answer

  1. Armor reduces all damage. Physical, elemental, everything. Resistances are self-explanatory. 1 resistance is worth about 10 armor against that particular element.

They both work together multiplicatively. Ie. Say you have 50% reduced damage from armor and 50% fire resistance. Your final mitigation against fire attacks will be 75%.

  1. Damage reduction comes in several forms.

Armor provides physical damage reduction which comes from basic attacks. Armor is buffed by adding Strength

there are several types of "elemental" damage. the different types are Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Arcane/Holy. These resistances are buffed by adding Intelligence. Also items may add to one or more particular type of resistance (ie. +20 fire resistance shield)

Dodge chance provides a chance to dodge each of the above attacks. Increase dodge chance comes from Dexterity.
