    Duplication Guide by LayzAyzn

    Version: 1.1 | Updated: 02/18/17 | Search Guide | Bookmark Guide

    Introduction

This is an in-depth guide to duplicating unique weapons and shields. If you're interested in what that entails or already have an idea of what you're looking for, press on. I will do my best to avoid spoilers, but given some of the content, it is impossible to avoid them entirely. Because of this, and other reasons, I suggest completing the game before tampering with duplication. Duplication is not a necessity, but simply a luxury. :)

Why You Might Want to Dupe

There are many different reasons why one might wish to duplicate an item. (This will often be referred to within this guide as the process of duping, or just 'duping'/'dupe'.) Some of those reasons being:

    • Not having to level characters up to the 90s and hoping that the RNG gives you Ninjas who know the right ability to throw the item you want, AND don't know other abilities (so they don't prefer to throw another item instead of the item you want)
    • Not having to bother with making your way to a specific map, continuously entering and resetting until you encounter the right monsters to poach, and then hoping that the poached item is the one you wanted (or else you'd have to reset, rinse, and repeat)
    • Not having to enter a map over and over until the right human units show up so you can steal their equipment
    • Being able to use some of the higher-up Draw Out skills, such as Masamune or Chirijiraden, more than just a couple times (Why should Elmdor have all the fun?)

How to Dupe and How It Works

The following methods will be used as tools in this guide to help you duplicate items, and will be referred back to.

    Method (1)

Most items will follow this method

    0. Have your character prepared (Stated character/job with any Support Abilities required equipped)

    1. Equip the desired Item to duplicate into the 'Top Hand'

    2. Go into appropriate 'Shop'

    3. Enter the 'fitting room' and select the character with the desired Item

    4. 'Try on' into the 'Bottom Hand' any item of the same Type:

(If duplicating a Weapon, try on a Weapon into the 'Bottom Hand'. If a Shield, a Shield. This process should leave a blank slot in the 'Top Hand')

    5. 'Best fit' and confirm

(This should put back the to-be-duped Item. If there are any remaining suggestions, you may want to 'quit fitting' them to save Gil)

    6. Return to the main shop menu (by pressing 'X' twice or confirming 'fitting over')

    Method (2)

This method differs from Method 1 at Steps (4a) & (4b)

    0. Have your character prepared (Stated character/job with any Support Abilities required equipped)

    1. Equip the desired Item to duplicate into the 'Top Hand'

    2. Go into appropriate 'Shop'

    3. Enter the 'fitting room' and select the character with the desired Item

4a. 'Try on' into the Top Hand any item of the opposite Type:

(If duplicating a Weapon, try on a Shield into the Top Hand. If duplicating a Shield, try on a Weapon into the 'Top Hand'.)

4b. Repeat (4a) but this time, 'Try it on' into the Bottom Hand

(If you tried on a Shield into the 'Top Hand' for (4a), try on a Shield into the 'Bottom Hand'. If a Weapon, a Weapon.

You should now have a duplicate of the Item. A fast way to check this is to go into the 'Sell' menu and check the quantity of the Item. (The total quantity should be higher than before.)

If you don't care/it doesn't matter to you why and/or how any of this works, go ahead and skip to the next section, The 40 Items.

This works because of a glitch that happens after 'Best fit' decides that the original item you came in with should be back in the 'blank slot' as it originally was.

Method #1 only works when the shop's best equippable item for Step 4 is 'weaker' than or equal to your equipped item.
Method #2 only works when the shop doesn't have any equippable items of the type that you are trying to duplicate, and at least one of the opposite type.

    Notes:

    • 'Weapon strength' for 'Best fit' is ordered by two things. Firstly, WP, with higher WP being stronger (really?!). Secondly, by item code. Each item has a code attached to it that determines the order. I didn't include these codes for the sake of simplicity, but you can find them in "APPENDIX B" of aerostar's 'Battle Mechanics Guide'. When two weapons are of equal WP, a weapon higher up on the list takes priority over a weapon lower on the list. Shield priority is ordered by Physical-Evasion.
    • Longbows are equipped with both hands, but the slot that you select to equip it is the slot it is actually in (which should be the 'Top Hand', for the purposes of this FAQ).
    • If 'Martial Arts' is equipped, 'Best fit' will always unequip any weapons you currently have equipped. (This is a hindrance to duping, so be sure to take this off if you have it on.)
    • 'Two Hands' can be used with some of the setups, but in other times, it may mess up your duping, so it is not advised to always leave it on/set.
    • 'Two Swords' is never necessary nor useful for duping.
    • You don't have to exit the store completely to finish the dupe; you only need to go as far as the shop's main menu.
    • Headgear/bodygear/accessories are unable to be duped, as it is impossible to come in with something equipped and create a blank slot there.

    The 40 Items

These 40 weapons and shields cannot be purchased from shops. Multiples of some of them can be obtained through other methods, but those methods generally tend to be tedious and time-consuming. Some of them can only be obtained only once through the course of normal gameplay.

    Example Item
    • Stats
    • How to get it:
      • Move-Find Item
      • Steal/pick-up
      • Poach
      • Etc
    • Where/How to duplicate:
      • (Valid shops)
        • (Setups)(Method#)

    Notes:

    • There are six different kinds of shops:
      • Gariland, Goug, Lesalia, Castles, Trade Cities, and Other Cities
        • The five Castles are: Igros, Limberry, Lionel, Riovanes, and Zeltennia
        • The three Trade Cities are: Dorter, Warjilis, and Zarghidas
        • The four Other Cities are: Bervenia, Goland, Yardow, and Zaland
    • Often, there will be multiple setups for duping an item at a certain place. You need only to follow one of them, so you can pick whichever is most convenient for you.
    • In some setups, a special character will be listed i.e. Ramza, Agrias, Rafa, Malak, Beowulf, Orlandu, Meliadoul, &/or Cloud. If you are using a setup with one of these characters, then you should be in that character's base-job e.g. Agrias' Holy Knight job.
    • Sometimes, a rare item can be obtained by stealing it from an enemy or from obtaining it from his or her treasure chest. Other times, it can be acquired by poaching a monster. In these cases, it may be wise to consult the 'Battle List' by Goryus to find these enemies. (Do note that some random battles' availability vary depending on your point in the story progression. All battles are confirmed to be available after the chain of battles at Murond Holy Place.)
    • In the case of Move-Find Items, I recommend using another FAQ, such as FFBeowulf's 'Move-Find Item Guide', to help you find exactly where the items are.
    • Some items can only be acquired once, normally. Don't:
      • Miss your chance to get it! The Escutcheon II and Genji Shield can be missed!
      • Move-Find the wrong Item at a spot and save
      • Let an enemy pick up an item at that spot (Whether or not they pick up the good item, there won't be anything there for you to pick up, even if you come back to that map later!)
      • Let your rare item get stolen/broken before having an extra
      • Let a character, equipped with a unique item, materialize without having an extra

    Duping For Money

You may find that sometimes you are short of Gil for something you wish to purchase. This section will detail the easiest way to acquire Gil by duping. Personally, I wouldn't consider duping too necessary until Chapter 3, but to each their own. You should also note that some of these setups may and/or will expire as you progress through the story and stronger/more expensive items become available.

    Chapter 1

Broad Sword (100 Gil per dupe)

    • Gariland
      • Squire (1)

After Mandalia Plains, Long Sword (250 Gil per dupe)

    • Gariland, Castles
      • Squire (1)

After Dorter Trade City, Iron Sword (450 Gil per dupe)

    • Gariland, Castles
      • Squire (1)
    • Trade Cities
      • Squire (2)

After Lenalia Plateau, Mythril Sword (800 Gil per dupe)

    • Gariland
      • Squire (1)
    • Castles
      • Knight (1)
    • Trade Cities
      • Squire (2)
    Chapter 2

After Zirekile Falls, Coral Sword (1,650 Gil per dupe)

    • Gariland
      • Squire (1)
    • Castles
      • Knight (1)
    • Trade Cities
      • Squire (2)

After visiting Lionel Castle, Giant Axe (2,000 Gil per dupe)

    • Gariland, Castles
      • Squire (1)
    • Trade Cities
      • Squire (2)
    • Other Cities
      • Wizard with 'Equip Axe' (1)

After visiting Goug, Romanda Gun (2,500 Gil per dupe)

    • Goug
      • Chemist (1)
    • Trade Cities
      • Wizard with 'Equip Gun' (1)
    Chapter 3+

Now the money's going to come in! Duping from here on is really simple, as you can dupe at all locations, and all you need is a Female! If you've raised a Wildbow and have an FS Bag, that's the most money you can make per dupe. If you don't have an FS Bag, it's just as fine; the other bags still make great Gil.

    • C Bag (26,500 Gil per dupe)
    • P Bag (26,000 Gil per dupe)
    • H Bag (29,000 Gil per dupe)
    • FS Bag (30,000 Gil per dupe)
    • Gariland, Goug, Lesalia, Castles, Trade Cities, AND Other Cities!
      • Female Chemist (1)

    Tips/Miscellany/Trivia

    • Dorter Trade City is the most convenient place to be for duping, as it has a fur shop and is at most two possible random encounters away from the other areas.
    • You can dupe with more than one person every time you go into the fitting room for up to 16 dupes each time you enter the fitting room.
    • If you are trying to Catch Weapons from Ninjas, some tips are:
      • Placing status changes, e.g. Don't Move, Haste, Innocent, Silence, Quick
      • Encountering the rare group of 6+ Ninjas at Araguay Woods, approaching from the West (i.e. Dorter Trade City)
        • If your characters' levels are too high, you can try to encounter the lone Female Ninja at TERMINATE of Deep Dungeon. Doing this will allow you to corner and manipulate her into triggering the Degenerator trap (Refer to the PNG map made by jekoln for a layout of the area and the trap's location)
    • The 'perfect' party of unique characters (having Quotes in the Formation menu) is:
    RamzaRadAliciaLavian
    BocoMustadioAgriasRafa
    MalakBeowulfReisWorker 8
    OrlanduMeliadoulCloudByblos

If you also intend to have this party/setup, you may want to do all of your poaching as early as the beginning of Chapter 3 and absolutely before getting your last 2 characters, Cloud and Byblos. Ribbons and (the first of) FS Bags can only be gotten through breeding, so whether you want 1 Ribbon, 7, or '361' (7 equipped on Cloud and each female, 99 on-hand and 255 in the Fur Shop) of them, you'll have to do it before finishing Cloud's sidequest and the Deep Dungeon.

      • The first Uribo you can get is at the first battle at Zigolis Swamp in Chapter 2. (This Uribo is only available at Zigolis Swamp at the FIRST battle there, in which Ramza and Mustadio mention their misfortune at having to fight monsters in a swamp.)
      • An interesting caveat to this is that Cloud's Person entry in the Brave Story doesn't appear until he has joined your party and then is gone, whether he was materialized or you dismiss him from your party. One could argue that the Brave Story would be incomplete without his entry.
        • The aforementioned entry is as follows, if you don't want to dismiss him:

    Cloud (Age: ?)

A young man summoned from a different dimension by a machine
called, the "Transmission Machine". This old generation
machine was found by Machinist Besrodio, in the underground
mine number 83 in the city of Goug. He may be affected by the
transmission, but he mumbles, "My head..." or "...phiros...".
Your circumstances makes [sic] him defect during battle.

    • All Move-Find panels have two drops, with one of them generally being better (the 'good drop'), and the other being a more common item (the 'bad drop'). All of the items in this list that can be obtained through Move-Find are good drops. The chance of getting the good drop is (100-Brave)%. Thus, the lower the Item Finder's Brave is, the higher the chance you have of picking up the right item. You can manipulate this with Beowulf's Chicken (-50 Brave), Oracle's Foxbird (-30 Brave), Mediator's Threaten (-20 Brave), etc on your Item-Finder before (s)he moves to the buried treasure.
      • Be warned, though! Your character permanently loses 1 Brave for every 4 Brave less than (s)he started the battle with. After a battle, if a unit's permanent Brave is from 15 to 6, you will get a Warning after each battle about that unit's fear of battle. Subsequently, if a unit's permanent Brave is 5, that unit will PERMANENTLY retreat from your party due to cowardice.
        • The above does not apply to Ramza, but you may not want for Ramza's Brave to be low, for reasons such as his attacking damage and the likelihood of his Reaction Ability triggering.
    • During the Nelveska Temple battle, you can use a Behemoth, Dragon, Hydra, Malboro, or Worker-8 as a platform to help jump onto the pillars that have Escutcheon II and Javelin II, but you can also Mount a Chocobo and then Dismount your character onto the pillar! (Both scenarios require the Item-Finder to have 4+ Jump.)
      • Using this trick, it is actually also possible to get a human with 3 Jump onto the pillar, although this is a little more intricate. To do this, before mounting the Chocobo, inflict it with the 'Float' status. This will raise its height and allow a rider with 3 Jump to Dismount onto the pillar. It should be noted, though, that trying to cast Float on the Chocobo after it's already been mounted will not work, and having Float on the human before mounting the Chocobo has no effect.
    • Some tips to help steal against Elmdor are:
      • Martial Arts and Attack Up increase the chance of success. Thus, a Monk with Attack up is recommended (as Monks innately have Martial Arts). Martial Arts is better than Attack Up, if for whatever reason your desired setup forces your stealer to be a Primary Job other than Monk.
      • Better Zodiac compatibility with Elmdor also increases the success rate of stealing.
        • Best compatibility: Female Sagittarius
        • Good compatibility: Aquarius, Libra (Beowulf or Mustadio)
        • Neutral compatibility: Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, and Taurus
        • Bad compatibility: Pisces, Virgo
        • Worst compatibility: Male Sagittarius
      • Lowering Elmdor's Brave will cause his Reaction Ability, Blade Grasp, to block your steal attempts less often. This can be done with Beowulf's Chicken, an Oracle's Foxbird, or a Mediator's Threaten.
      • Stealing the Genji Shield first will lower his Evasion, making it easier for you to steal his other equipment (Masamune/Gauntlet/Armor/Helmet).
      • While your thief is stealing, it would probably be convenient for your other characters to be casting Slow (and Darkness), Speed/Magic/Power Breaking Elmdor, and also increasing your thief's speed, through abilities like Yell, Haste, and Cheer Song.
    • Occasionally during the list, I mention that some method or other is the only way to get an item, and/or I omit a method of obtaining the item. This is intentional, as I am excluding the last chain of battles leading up to the ending, as it is impossible to go to a shop and dupe after starting that chain.
    • The PSP remake of FFT (FFT: The War of the Lions) fully names all of the bags:
      • C Bag = Croakadile Bag
      • P Bag = Pantherskin Bag
      • H Bag = Hydrascale Bag
      • FS Bag = Fallingstar Bag
    • Four of The 40 Items are listed as available at Nelveska Temple, which is a location that can only be gotten to through a sidequest. I won't note all of the details of the sidequest here, but you should be aware that there are strict requirements:
      • Have and keep Mustadio in your party
        • This is also required to recruit Cloud
      • Buy a flower from the Flower Girl upon going to Zarghidas
        • Buying a flower subtracts 1 Gil from your War Funds. Because the rest of the game ever only adds or subtracts Gil in multiples of five, this will always be visible on your War Funds if you do so. It is actually still possible to purchase a flower while having exactly 0 Gil, and if you do, your War Funds will still be 0 after the purchase. Regardless of the amount of Gil you have, as long as you buy the flower, the sidequest can still progress.
      • Accept Beowulf's request to accompany you during the sidequest
        • Both Beowulf and Reis must be present in your party after finishing and leaving Nelveska Temple to gain access to Dragoner Reis
    • Other ~missables worth mentioning:
      • Vanish Mantle (Move-Find Item) at Germinas Peak
      • Ramza's Ultima Spell at 'At the Gate of Limberry Castle', 'Inside of Limberry Castle', and 'Chapel of St. Murond Temple'
      • Genji Helmet/Armor/Gauntlet from Elmdor
      • Cursed Ring & Secret Clothes (Move-Find Items) at TIGER of Deep Dungeon
      • Robe of Lords (Move-Find Item) at VOYAGE of Deep Dungeon
      • Grand Helmet & Maximillian (Move-Find Items) at HORROR of Deep Dungeon
      • Zodiac summon from Elidlibs

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can you dupe headgear, bodygear, and/or accessories?

A: No. At least not through the methods I've listed. If anyone discovers anything, feel free to email me with a detailed explanation, but I have to imagine that it's very unlikely.

Q: Does duplication work in FFT: The War Of Lions for PSP?

A: I myself haven't confirmed whether or not duping works on the PSP version, but others have deduced that it has been removed/fixed.
