GT2 fails to live up as a sequel, instead more like an expansion package of the original!!!

Fans of the original Gran Turismo has been looking forward to the release of Gran Turismo 2, the sequel to the no 1 best racing simulation in 1998. The sequel is almost better than its original in almost every aspect but why does it score a point less? [I give the original Gran Turismo a 9!]

Just for your information, Gran Turismo comes with two discs. The first disc is the arcade mode, and the second disc is the innovative simulation mode. When the first Gran Turismo was released in 1998, it came only with a disc, which includes both arcade and simulation mode. I believed it was the simulation mode that made Gran Turismo as the crown of all racing game in 1998 but...

A game that will push your PlayStation to the utmost limit...? In terms of what? Graphics..? Al..? Ram...? A load of craps! It says that the original Gran Turismo uses up 75% of the PlayStation capability and Gran Turismo 2 will max up everything to 100% and take full use of all the PlayStation technology. But from what i have seen and played, it doesn't prove that this is right!

Ridge Racer IV seems to have better graphics than Gran Turismo. The graphics, in my opinion, hasn't changed much, or perhaps slighly worse, due to a lower resolution. Take High Speed Ring in the arcade mode and compare it to the original game.

You still get that awesome beautiful replay value just like the original. And, there are more views for you to change during the replay scene, which makes it better than the original. But, the pathetic polygonal pop-ups and some common gitches are still there.

Like the original game, the opening CG shows some cars, tracks and so on but the style is different now, mainly old cars from the past. Some may dislike it. Well, i don't really mind that!

I know that there are quite a lot of famous tunes. But, when you are racing, you probably cannot hear the background music properly. Why? The sound quality is too excellent, so realistic that you hear only all the sound effects of braking, speeding etc that you can't hear the music properly.

The control stays true to the original and if you have played the original, you should not have any difficulty with it, if you are a fan of the original.

Now, moving on to the gameplay! Yeah, i know! The gameplay is excellent, just like the first. In the first GT, you probably complain that there are a lack of tracks and cars but now, you have over 500 cars and over 20 tracks. So, why am i still not satisfied? I have to admit that the cars in the game replicate the actual performance, handling, drive-train, and so on quite perfectly but...

First of all, do you really need 500 cars? Of course, i don't pennalise the game just because of that. What i am disappointed is that it has failed to live up as a sequel. As a sequel, i expected something more than that. Of course, if this is an expansion package of the first Gran Turismo, then i have nothing else to say. [Look at Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid Integral!] Several tracks are repeated from the first game, and the basic formula to beat the simulation mode is still the same. Race and pass licenses and then take part in competition... Honestly, i have nothing against that! It's just that i expected more new features than that. It's not just adding new cars and new tracks and that's it, a sequel! Of course, i have to admit that the developers spent a lot of time, doing researching, contacting as many car manufacturers and all those copyright stuff... yeah, i know that! But the words of the car profiles are so small that you will probably strain your eyes when trying to read them.

I hope to see something like having more than 6 cars in a race, or perhaps something like formula 1 with more than 10 cars. Perhaps a feature that we can determine the weather condition? [Choose whether you want to a race on a track when it is sunny, windy, rainy or whatever...?] Or perhaps, offers multi-player, up to a maximum of at least four players...? Is that possible?

Of course, the gameplay is still as in-depth as before, or perhaps even more as there are more cars than before. With as many as 500 cars, racing fan may get confuse when choosing the correct car. Basically, if you take away the new cars and some new tracks that have been added to GT2, the game plays much like the original, with very LITTLE DIFFERENCE.

Overall, Gran Turismo 2 is still a great game. I will still recommend the game to everyone. If you are a fan of the original, don't wait anymore. Go and purchase it. If you have not played the original game before, do give it a try seriously and see if you like it.
