The reason Soul Blade received its name, as opposed to the original arcade title of Soul Edge which was used in Japan, was because when Namco attempted to apply for a trademark for the game outside of Japan, they were sued by Tim Langdell, the owner of Edge Games. Langdell claimed that he owned the right to use the word 'Edge' in anything video game related, and as a result, Namco renamed the game Soul Blade outside of Japan. To avoid future issues, the sequel was given the name Soul Calibur, as were all future installments.
