"Finally returning to the top and with gusto to boot!"

I've heard about the so-so run of NHL 2001 on the PS2, now we have NHL 2002 and by golly, it has been improved to a point that it may challenge the good old days of the Genesis, and that's saying a lot.

Gameplay: 10/10
The gameplay is very simple and easy to use. Shooting and Passing are easy to use and even those tough to pull off One-Timers are simple and effective to a beginner player. For those guys who want to kick some butt, checks are also one button as well, meaning you can lay the smack down and enjoy it as well.

Graphics: 9/10
The players look very real, so real it's scary. They look just like the real players you see every Wednesday night on Wednesday Night Hockey on ESPN. Hell, even the ref looks real. That's the good news, the bad news is the crowd, which looks like EA Sports ported members from The Sims and put them into those huge arenas, though they do have a life.

Audio: 10/10
This is great! The announcing team of Jim Hughson and Don Taylor can either make you laugh until milk comes out of your nose or cringe in total fear. For me, I really like the two. Music wise, you'll hear the likes of..
-Barenaked Ladies
-treble charger
-Sum 41
This is good, since Hockey is traditionally a Canadian sport, so it makes sense to have Canadian bands do the music for this game.

Game Modes: 9/10
The meat and potatoes of this game is the game modes, which include Quick Start, Exhibition, Season/Career, Playoffs, Tournament, and Shootout. The Season mode takes you in the control of a NHL team(All 30 teams are in the game, by the way) and you have to lead them to the most prized trophy in sports, the Stanley Cup. After your first year, it will become the Career mode, which leads you through 10 years at the helm of the NHL team you picked. Tournament is also a fun mode, which you lead one of 20 national teams to the Gold medal(This game's national teams, oddly enough, include non-hockey playing countries like France, England, and Italy). The one major problem is the lack of a custom league option, which is fun in any game, that's why I give it a 9.

Buy or Rent: Buy
This is the best hockey game on the PS2, bar none. Don't let Shootout fool you, this is the game you will want to buy if you're looking for a good sports game without resorting to shell out $50 on other games which may not have the replay abilities of NHL 2002

Overall: 10/10
This is by far the best sports game for the PS2, let alone the best hockey game on it. It's has great graphics, cool music, a great announcer duo, lots of gameplay options, and the gameplay is easy and great to into as well. This game wins...No, runs away with the PS2 Stanley Cup.
