At first, I thought a western couldn't compete with a modern day game. I was wrong. Dead wrong.

Red Dead Revolver

Welcome to a time when there were dueling and train robberies where a part of everyday life and when the size of man was determined by the size (and skill) of his gun. Red Dead Revolver is the first western style shooter I have played for the Playstation 2. At first, I thought a western couldn't compete with a modern day game. I was wrong. Dead wrong. Red dead Revolver presents an excellent picture of the old west and maintains a separate gun fighting style.

Gameplay 9/10
Variety. The whole game is about variety. Every chapter you do is going to have something different about it and that is what makes this game fun. Have you ever defended a few hookers in a bar fight? Or have you ever rode a buffalo while pulling of shoots at enemy bandits? You can enjoy all of the old-western gameplay without having to repeat it over and over again. The gunplay is also different from most other games. There are no machine guns or grenades; you’re going to have to pick your targets with rifles and dynamite. This is a new type gunplay.

Graphics 8/10
The graphics aren't bad looking. The mountains and rivers look real and at some points its best to just stare into the vast openness. You could compare this game’s graphics with just about anything. The glitches aren't too bad during the game, because they just consist of some bad animation. There is barely any scripted action because you play as a bounty hunter, but that still doesn’t ruin the game’s stunning appeal.

Sound 8/10
The sounds are great and add to the western setting. The shotgun blast sounds like a shotgun and dynamite sounds like real explosives. The voice acting is little shabby, but the cut scenes more than make up for it. The music also adds to depth of the game and really is wonderful because it will pick up during a gunfight and then slow down when you’re done.

Controls 10/10
The controls are laid out at the beginning of the game and are easy to understand. The learning curve comes with the story, so all ties in together perfectly. The controls follow the analog stick to move and rotate camera, with drawing your weapon and shooting it easy. Once you do understand the controls (which will take less than twenty minutes), it will help you get a felling of the game better and offer plenty of more things to do. The only problem with the controls is when you’re riding an animal and your trying to shoot. It is jst impossible to multi-task right off the bat so you’re going to spend a little bit of time on this.

Re-playability 9/10
This is where the game really shines. In Red Dead Revolver, you buy things to unlock items. You can play to experience the story, than play for multi-player items, than play for journal pages. The multiplayer also adds in great with several maps, 45+ players to choose from, over 5 modes of play, and the different kinds of weapons can total over 100. They include death match, team death match, showdown, and dueling.

Story 8/10
The story line starts out a little boring, but picks up the best at the end. It start with your mom and dad being kill by bandits, than you continue on to find out who did it, why they did it, and who is behind the whole plan. You can get by the game without paying too much attention to what's going on during the cut scenes but it is best to follow it as it is still great to watch.

Value 8/10
This is quite a fun game to play. It has everything from bar brawls to showdowns to raiding a fort. If you’re looking for something different than the action-shooter games out there, than try Red Dead Revolver. Expect to pay around $40. It will keep you playing for more than 15 hours during the single player, and if you play the multi-player, that's another five or ten hours. Overall, you play the game on hard and pay attention to everything; it will be worth anything under $40.

Rent or Buy? Recommendation?
This game can be beat whenever you rent it, but to get its full-feeling, buy the game and play through it. You won't be disappointed. It’s a great game on a nearly untouched genre. Bottom line: you have to try this game. It is an excellent representation of a simpler time known as “the west”. Don’t mark this off your list because I highly recommend you try it. If you get it as a gift, defiantly keep it. Put this at the top of your list of Playstation action shooters and you won’t be disappointed.
