"My new daily schedule: Wake up, Play THPS4, Go back to sleep!"

The most popular series of skateboarding games comes back with it’s 4th title. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, adds a bunch of new features such as a whole new career mode, a new way of unlocking cheats, and the skater, Bob Burnquist makes a return in this game after skipping THPS3.

Gameplay: 10/10

The gameplay of this game is pretty much like the other Tony Hawk games. The controls are just about identical to Tony Hawk 3, except for a small few differences. Doing “Flatland” tricks or manual tricks are a lot easier in this game. All that is needed to do is press the Square, Triangle, or Circle button twice to change from manual into a Casper, Pogo Jump, or Truckstand, to name a few. Another new addition in THPS4 is that, when applicable, if you press the L2 or R2 buttons, while getting air on a quarter pipe, you will perform a spine transfer, which makes doing combos a lot easier. Now, you can skitch cars in THPS4, which is basically holding onto the back and going for a ride!

Story: 10/10

The Career Mode for THPS4 has gotten a total facelift. You now start out in freeskate, and go up to people in order to find which goal you must complete. This is what you must do in each of the 9 levels. There are 21 goals for each of the main levels, and 14 for the two secret levels. Each of the skaters has their own pro goal, which you must do in a level. The Pro Specific challenges usually have to do with something that the skater has accomplished in real life. For doing goals, you receive cash, which you can spend on levels, skaters, cheats, clothes, decks, and movies.

Audio/Video: 10/10

The in-game music in THPS4 is better than any other of the series. It features will know bands such as AC/DC and some unknown bands the make good music. Skater Chad Muska has some of his songs featured in the game. The ability to view the playlist is also in this game, as well.

The graphics in this game are also an improvement. The real videos that you unlock by doing a Pro Specific challenge or buying them are great quality, just like watching a skate video. The graphics while you play are also a lot better. They are a notch above THPS3’s graphics, but you can see a few areas of improvement, such as the cars, the water, and the board it self.

Replayability: 10/10

Lucky for us, the PS2 version of THPS4 has online play, so we are able to go online playing again. If you’ve played THPS3 online, you will notice a huge difference. Neversoft and Activision seem to have put a good amount of time into this because it is great.

If you don’t have the PS2 network adapter, you can play 2 players, which adds more fun into everything. A few more game modes have been added, so don’t worry if you got tired of the modes in THPS4.

If you only play one player, this game still has a lot of replayability. The whole career mode takes a while to play, and THPS4 is a lot more difficult than the past installments, so you will be sure to have long playing times with this game.

Buy/Rent: Buy

This game is good for everyone, even for those who don’t skate. If you didn’t like the other THPS games, the new career mode might interest you to at least rent this. This is definitely the game to buy of 2002!
