JAK II: RENEGADE
Jak is back... bigger, better, bolder, stronger...
The best platformer game in the world... wait, the best game in the world!
Things couldn’t have been better. This is brilliant and captures everything in it’s full glory. When you are on your jet board and go over some water or grass you can see the air brush beneath. In cutscenes you can see the expression on the faces and every body action is perfectly executed. In Dead Town you can see some dirt fall from a couple of places and it looks beautiful. I never knew dirt could be beautiful until now. Haven Forest is by far my most favourite place with the lush grass, the water surface effects and the flowing waterfall.
Every sound is perfect although when the Krimson Guards communicate with each other it starts to irritate fairly quickly. But the cool thing is if you fail a mission and go back to that person (if you said no when it says “retry mission, yes or no”) you can just skip the cutscene instead of watching the whole thing and hearing the sound again. The only thing bad about the sound is the radio checks otherwise it’s perfect.
The story is very confusing. You sometimes have to stop a while just to figure it out. I won’t spoil the story for you people who don’t already own this awesome game. But basically Jak, Daxter, Keira and Samos get thrown into the future and on their way get separated (Jak and Daxter stay together). Immediately upon arrival Jak is taken prisoner by a group of Krimson Guards while Daxter escapes. Jak is subjected to dark eco experiments by the Baron Praxis. Never fear Jak, for Daxter comes to the rescue and helps him escape. Jak then tries to seek revenge on the baron. So he goes to people to seek answers. I won’t tell the rest otherwise it’ll spoil the story.
This is the best part about this game. The city itself is huge and then you get to visit places outside of the city as well. The missions vary from taking people from one place to the other to hunting metal heads. You can also ride on a jet board to get to places previously unreachable or you could go to the stadium to practice or get high scores in “get as many points as can” style. You must also use your jet board for some missions (which is very fun) . You also get one morph gun that you can upgrade into four different styles, like a shot gun, a blaster, a sub-machine gun and… well you will have to find out, won’t you? You also get to race in races in the stadium and the city. Best of all you get to hijack cars above you, not only that but you also get to change the height of your vehicle. There are two heights that you can change between. There is a traffic height which has a bunch of cars to crash into or the walking height which you can run over innocent people. But you must be careful on both heights that you don’t bump into a Krimson Guard vehicle or run over a Krimson Guard on foot. You can also do a combination of driving a vehicle on any level and with any gun. Jak can also change into Dark Jak which is more powerful, though he doesn’t have a gun or hijack vehicles. Your life has also increased from three lives to eight lives though some enemies take 2 lives away when they attack you. There are also creatures outside the city called metal heads which give you skull gems. These creatures change appearance depending on the level outside the city you go to. Some are even partly invisible.
There are 60 story missions, 24 side missions, 8 races, a shooting range for each gun and 286 precursor orbs to find and earn. Remember which metal heads you haven’t retrieved skull gems from yet because once you collect a metal head skull gem you can’t get it again from the same metal head (even if you die and come back or load a game). Once you have enough skull gems you can visit the oracle (can you remember it from the first game?). The oracle then gives you special powers when you transform into Dark Jak. The first time you have to collect 25 skull gems then you have to collect 200 for two more and the last one 100 for the special powers. These powers are very useful because allow you to take out a whole lot of enemies at once, even vehicles! These powers are definitely worth getting, so make sure you collect as many metal head skulls as possible.
If you remember the controls from Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy it is easy to get into the controls because they are the same. However, if you are new then it may take a while because all the controls are used up.
Here are a list of the main characters that appear in the game.Jak, Daxter, (duh!) Keira, Samos, Baron Praxis, Vin, Erol, Torn, Ashelin, Onin, Onin’s parrot/monekey, Krew, Kid, Kor (Metal Kor) .
This is best game I have ever played…EVER. I have played a fair number of games in different categories but my favourite style is the platformer. I have and love the following games: Ratchet and Clank, SSX Tricky, Airblade, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Alien vs Predator: Extinction, Freekstyle, Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis, Sled Storm, Spider-Man: the movie, Star Wars Bounty Hunter, WRC II: Extreme, Vexx, Wakeboarding Unleashed Featuring Shaun Murray, Medal of Honor: Frontline, Ratchet and Clank 2 (Locked and Loaded or Going Commando), Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, SSX 3 and Tony Hawk’s Proskater 4. My favourite out of all of these games is most definitely Jak II: Renegade (until Jak III, maybe?) .
Rent or BUY?
Don't even think about renting this game, it is definitely worth buying, which is what I did!
Rating: 5.0 - Flawless
