"Very gory, violent game that looks and plays great!"
God of War is an action game developed by Sony Computer Entertainment America. In this game your goal is to eliminate the God of War, Ares. The path to get to him is very gory and packed with lots of action and challenging puzzles.
You might think this game is just an OK game, that there's nothing really special about it, but you won't know that, until you've experienced this game for yourself. The game has lots of action and very nice puzzles for you. If you're an Action game fan, you will not be disappointed with this game.
The game actually is one big level. There is no level system, but you progress from point A to point B. The game is very linear and you don't have to worry about to much back tracking.
The combat system in this game is very flexible and very accessible for beginners. You have two attack buttons; a button for strong but slow attacks and a button for somewhat weaker but faster attacks. The attacks show an animation of Kratos throwing with his two blades, which looks very cool.
Besides the two attack buttons, Kratos also has the option to grab an enemy and when he has them in his hands he has many options. A few of these options are to split the enemy apart using his bare hands, or to swing them around with your blades and throwing them to some other enemies.
Kratos also has the option to jump in the air and fight. He also can grab enemies from the air and can kill them while they are in the air. All this results in some very nice combos.
Against many of the enemies there also is another way to fight, other than using your throw, strong or weaker attack button. When you have damaged some enemies enough, you will get to see an icon of one of the four colored buttons of the Playstation 2 floating on top of their head. If you press the correct button, the game goes into a mini game, where you have to tap a certain button very fast, or press some other buttons. When the game goes into these mini games, you will see some very nice animations of Kratos killing or hurting his enemy in a very brutal and gory way.
Kratos also has the ability to cast magic attacks. There are four types of magic in the game you get from four different gods. Each god has a specialty, so you will see their specialty reflected in the attack. Zeus for example will give Kratos the ability to throw Arrows of Thunder. The magic attacks look very nice and they do some good damage.
The gods also have given Kratos The Rage of the Gods. In this mode Kratos is invincible and he is much stronger. This however only is for a short period of time and it takes very long to fill the Rage of the Gods bar. It might want to save the Rage if the Gods for intense fights.
As you progress through the game, you will be able to upgrade your weapons and magic, with the earned experience points. You will be able to upgrade your weapons and magic to a stronger version and a version with more attacks.
The game also has some challenging puzzles to solve. They are not very hard and are fun to solve. The puzzles vary from a timed puzzle where you must slaughter hundreds of enemies within the time limit, or a trap will be activated, to simple puzzles which require items or objects to be placed in the right place. Because most of the puzzles aren't that hard to solve, most of them have a time element, to make the puzzle somewhat challenging and to put more pressure on you.
The story basically is about a Spartan warrior, named Kratos, who is on a mission. His mission is to find and destroy Ares, the God of War. The setting of the game is in the ancient Athens.
The game starts with a movie of Kratos throwing himself of a cliff. The game then starts three weeks earlier and from here you get to know about the story, bit by bit.
As you progress through the game, more about the story unfolds. You keep getting new information about the story till the very end of the game. You will then understand why Kratos wants to kill the God of War and also why he throws himself of a cliff in the beginning of the game.
The story is very interesting and has many references to the Greek mythology, which is a nice thing to see in a game like this.
The music of this game really ads to the atmosphere of the ancient Athens and sounds very nice. You get the feeling that you really are on a long journey, with the atmosphere created by the music.
The special effects in this game also are very nice. There is not a moment in the game where you get the feeling that the action doesn't sound or feel real.
Both the graphics and the music create a very nice atmosphere, which suits the game very well and enriches the gameplay experience.
The graphics of this game are superb. It looks very nice and the game plays very fluid. This game probably belongs to one of the best looking Playstation 2 games in this genre.
There are times when the screen is full of enemies and the game still plays very nice and looks very good. The animations of the special effects in the game also looks fabulous.
You really start to appreciate the graphics when you do gory moves to kill your enemies, like slicing someone in half with your sword or repeatedly grabbing someone from the air with your blades and throwing him on the ground.
In this game there are many things to unlock. The game has a menu of extras which you can unlock when you play through the game. One of the most rewarding extras probably is the Challenge of the Gods mode. These are a series of ten consecutive challenges, which are rather difficult. Once you complete them, you get some very rewarding presents and will certainly give you a reason to try and play the game again.
God of War belongs to one of the best action games on the Playstation 2. The story is very intriguing and the graphics of the game will leave you astonished. If you're not a gamer that really cares for unlocking everything and just want to complete the game, I suggest you rent the game first, if that is an option in your area. Besides that little point, this game should definitely be played at least once by any Action game fan.
