You don't need to be a diehard fan to have fun in this game.
Robotech:Invasion is the second Robotech game for the PS2, the first being Robotech:Battlecry. Invasion takes place 10 years after battlecry and you assume the role of 2 soldiers trying to force yet another hostile alien species off of earth.
Gameplay-The fact that you dont have to know anything about the Robotech anime series or Battlecry makes this game a whole lot more fun. Right from the beginning of the game you are thrown straight into a battle. The game slows down a fair amount after, but it soon returns to action. Perhaps the best part of this game is the ability to ride on combat motorcycles called "cyclones". These machines serve as the characters armor as well as a fast mode of transportation. The game can be difficult at times, but a few re-tries will get you through the tough parts. The controls are pretty much standard for any game of this type. Jump, fire, melee, all the same as most games.
Story-The story is very poorly explained in the beggining of the game, and flashback sequences placed at certain points in it give you little insight into what is going on. As you get further into the game the story becomes more and more clear. There are many points that will leave you screaming "PLOTHOLE", but once you get to the second half of the game, everything is explained.
Graphics/Sound-Like most games the graphics could always be better for this one, but a game shouldn't be judged on graphics alone. As for the sound, I think it is excellent. Great battle music alone with the riding sequence music for the cyclone really get you excited about the game. The noises for the weapons are some of my favorites in any game. Especially the cannon you get towards the end. There are only a handful of bosses, but the BGM's for them are wonderful.
Play Time/Replayability-It took me about 3 and a half hours to complete the game. It has a time tracking function on the save menu, but it only counts how long you have been in a specific area, not the game itself. Each area takes about 20 mins, and with retries about 25. Unfortunately the game has no unlockables or replay value unless you want to try it on the different difficulty settings. And dont be fooled by the "Extras" option in the options menu, that is just for cheats. The game is very fun, so it can be worth it just to play it again for that reason.
Final Thought-Overall I think this is a fairly decent game that deserves your time. Maybe not an ideal choice to buy, but certainly to rent.
Rating: 3.5 - Good
