Rise's early production design was initially rejected, then used to create Ai Ebihara.
The protagonist's canon name is Yu Narukami. This roughly translates into a quiet, howling god. Narukami is also the Japanese god of thunder. These foreshadow the protagonist's personality and the ultimate development of his powers.

Connection to Other Media
Chie's default persona is wearing a yellow tracksuit identical to that of Bruce Lee in The Game of Death. This reflects Chie's love of martial arts films.
There are a few nods to Persona 3 seen throughout the game. When visiting Club Escapade, Rise mentions a power outage happening there two years ago, which references the SEES Full Moon Operation. The group also visits the Seaside Clamshell Hotel, the location of Yukari's famous shower scene. Chihiro Fushimi has taken Mitsuru's place as Student Council President, and alludes to the experiences her social link. Tanaka is no longer a social link, but his home shopping service is still active.
The game's narrative is strongly associated with the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, an important philosopher of the late 1800s. Teddie's personal emptiness and desire to act in spite of it reflects Nietzsche's concept of the Ubermensch. One of Shadow Teddie's attacks is called the Nihil Hand, which references the concept of Nihilism.
The plastic models in the protagonist's room are based on demons from Digital Devil Saga.
During her rant, Shadow Yukiko mentions that, "someday my prince will come." This is a shout-out to a song of the same name in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
Naoto's hat and outfit is a reference to Raidou Kuzunoha, the main character from Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army. Chie even mentions Raidou's name when Naoto's background is revealed.
Kanji's cross-dressing outfit is a homage to Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch, right down to the curly wig.
Izanagi and Izanami are both prominent Japanese creation myths. An in-game teacher even provides a lecture on the myths, foreshadowing later events.
