    INTRO

The following is a non-spoiler walkthrough for Persona 5 with the express purposes of achieving the following on a ‘New Game' playthrough of the game:

    • Max every Confidant
    • Max all social attributes
    • Complete every Mementos mission
    • Read every book
    • Clear all TV games
    • Earn most room decorations

    PURPOSES AND NON-PURPOSES

Again, the guide is expressly for achieving the five bullet items above. What the guide is not for is advice for the navigating the game's dungeons, how to most effectively battle, boss strategy, etc. Generally, I feel as though things should be left to the player's devices to freely experiment with and discover on their own. This guide is written on the premise that because the game is anywhere between 60-80 hours long, it is reasonable for the player to seek a walkthrough that will allow them to see the entirety of every Confidant in the game in one run without having to devote a second playthrough or resorting to looking them up on YouTube.

    LOCALIZED TERMS

As this guide was written using the Japanese version of the game, many terms will differ from what is used in Atlus USA's localization. These will be corrected in time.

This will undoubtedly be most problematic with the titles of books. In the school's library, there is a set of books based on the literary inspirations for the team's Personas. Rather than try to make a best guess at what the localized titles will be, I simply refer to them as "Arsene book," "Captain Kidd book," et cetera because it should be obvious enough. Some books do have their officially localized titles written as of launch thanks to some streams that were done by media outlets.

For other books, I tried my best to translate and make a logical guess at what they'd be titled in English. However, from what little I've seen of the English game prior to release as well as having learned the official names of some of the books, the guesses I made may greatly vary from what's in the English game. For example, one book titled "Gupper Girl" in Japanese was changed to "Vague" in English, a play on the name of the popular women's magazine, Vogue.

My recommendation is to SAVE before buying books and make sure that the book you buy has the same statistical affect on your character as the one referenced in the guide, even if the titles are different.

Until I have the English game in my hands and I learn what the new names are, there isn't much I can do. I will be streaming the game at launch, making notes, and putting in edits as quickly as I reasonably can. It is still not clear what other terms will be changed in the localization. Please be patient if you come across non-localized terms before they've have been switched over to the official English versions.

    DIFFICULTY

Persona 5 has five difficulty options: Safety, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Risky. Risky was not available in the Japanese version until a later piece of free DLC became available and the same may hold true for the English game. The player may change the difficulty in the system menu at any time during the game, unless the Safety option is chosen. If the player chooses Safety at any point in the game – at the very beginning or by later picking Safety in the system menu – then the difficulty cannot be changed again during that playthrough. The difficulty cannot be customized in New Game or in ‘New Game+' like it could in Persona 4 Golden.

For the purposes of this kind of playthrough, I do recommend that the player chooses Safety or Easy. I understand this may not be acceptable to experienced players, and feel free to choose whatever difficulty you want and change it later if you so choose.

The reasons I recommend lower difficulties is because this kind of playthrough does not leave the player many opportunities to grind and have their level high for upcoming challenges and it is very taxing on your yen income. A common criticism shared of Persona 5's Japanese version players is that items in the game are too expensive and not enough yen is earned through regular means. In Safety mode, the player's yen income is increased for winning battles and this problem becomes a nonissue.

The activities required in this guide, as well as the potential frequent use of the Persona Compendium, makes this a very expensive playthrough. If you're on a higher difficulty and follow the activities to a T, you may find yourself short of funds to purchase luxuries such as new gear and consumables. Likewise, because your afternoon time is primarily focused on finishing Confidants and earning additional trophies, there are no set days specifically for grinding. Rather, grinding has to occur when it's most convenient: When you're in a story dungeon or when you're going to Mementos to do a mission that will advance a Confidant.

For those playing on a higher difficulty, I highly recommend grinding as much as possible during days in which you're in the other world, excluding the days where you will be fighting a story boss. The days I have the player dive into Mementos, for example, are few and far between, so make sure you grind as much as you can before leaving.

Again, feel free to choose what's comfortable to you as you can always change it later if you're not on Safety. Just do not blame the guide if you find yourself too poor and/or under-leveled.

    CARRYING THE MATCHING ARCANA

Veterans of Persona 3 and Persona 4 know that the modern Persona social system has a built-in way of earning Social Link/Confidant rank-ups faster. That is by carrying the 'matching arcana' with you when you go to spend time with someone. The social system works on a covert point tally. In order to achieve a rank-up, the player will have to have earned a certain amount of points since the last rank-up. This is done by choosing favorable responses during events and spending extra time with the Confidants in events which rank-ups do not occur. Carrying the matching arcana increases the amount of points you earn per favorable response and per extra event. So for example, if you are about to spend an afternoon with Makoto Niijima of the Priestess arcana, then you will need to have a Persona whose arcana is Priestess on your person. The Persona doesn't necessarily need to be the one equipped to you, but you absolutely need to have it on you.

This guide assumes that you are carrying the matching arcana. Not doing so may cause your experience to deviate from the guide. There are only a few exceptions to this rule. In the first week in which the player earns control of the afternoon time, an early event with Ryuji Sakamoto is confirmed to not require a Chariot Persona in order for the next event to also be rank-up. This is tested and confirmed because at this point in the game the player has not had the opportunity to obtain a Chariot Persona.

There are some other exceptions to this rule. Automatic Confidants obviously do not need the matching arcana and the rank-up events for those arcana are not noted in the schedule as I did not want to spoil when those rank-ups may occur or when the player may first establish one of those story based arcana. Additionally, Yuuki Mishima (Moon), Toranosuke Yoshida (Sun) and Caroline and Justine (Strength) are the other three Confidants that do not require the matching arcana. The Moon and Sun Confidants do take in-game time like most other Confidants, but the player is guaranteed a rank-up at every event no matter what dialogue responses they choose or whether or not they carry Moon and Sun Personas. As such, I neglected to list responses for those rank-ups. You also need not carry the Strength arcana as that Confidant is quest based.

Some of the events which I ask you to carry the matching arcana to may in fact not need it. This was the case in Persona 4, especially during the early stages of certain Social Links (hence the Ryuji exception). However, it would take extensive testing to figure out which events it is required for and which ones it is not. Rather, it is easiest to simply get in the habit of always carrying the matching arcana and lowering the odds that you make a mistake. Carrying the arcana is a lot like washing your hands; it's simply a good habit to get into.

    SAVE OFTEN AND ROTATE

I cannot stress this enough. Persona 5 grants the player sixteen save slots to work with. You may also save one file to internet storage which can be recalled later and can also be used to transfer save data between PS3 and PS4 versions of the game.

Unless for some reason you are sharing the game with someone else on the same PSN account on the same machine, there is no reason not to rotate your save file and make use of all sixteen slots. Should you make a mistake in the schedule and had been using only one save slot, continuously saving over the same file day after day, it would make it impossible to go back and correct yourself and thus throw the entire schedule in the trash.

To achieve everything this walkthrough has to offer, every single afternoon and night is precious and used. There is no room for error. Saving often and rotating is crucial. By saving every other day and using all sixteen slots, you should have the ability to go back as far as a month if you need to

    TRUE ENDING

This walkthrough will inform you on how to achieve the game's true ending. The game only has four endings: one true and three bad. There is no in between.

The first and most simple bad ending is seen if the player does not clear a Palace by the deadline. Obviously, if you're following the schedule this will not happen. Additionally, this scenario will vary somewhat depending on which Palace it is that you failed to clear.

I highly suggest you do not view this scenario without having beaten the game (or gotten very far into it). This is just my opinion, but I think this scene shows a little too much and could spoil someone who is very observant to small details. I understand that this may make players only that much more curious, but I ask you to trust my word. If you've finished the game and would like to know more about my reasoning for this assertion, feel free to privately contact me.

The second bad ending can occur at the pivotal moment at which the player must make certain responses to get on the path to the true ending. Like in Persona 4, there is a conversation that takes place late in the game that if handled incorrectly can send the player right to a bad ending. However, unlike P4, this scenario is much easier to navigate and nowhere near as convoluted. I got through it on my first try in the Japanese game, so that should illustrate how much easier it is than the P4 equivalent.

The second bad ending is the one I will be providing information on how to avoid in the walkthrough. Though I do consider this scenario much simpler than the P4 equivalent, the bad ending that can occur if the scene is bungled is essentially a spoiler for the following moments that occur even if you pick the responses for the true ending. As I imagine most players would rather see those moments while heading towards the true ending rather than a game over, I've decided to play it safe and just provide the responses.

A third bad ending can be viewed on the day of the game's final dungeon. This is also response triggered, but is very easy to avoid as I beat the game twice without even knowing this scenario existed. It would be more accurate to say that it takes effort to achieve this bad ending rather than to avoid it.

Again, there is only one good or ‘true' ending. There is no neutral ending like in Persona 4.

    RESPONSE FORM

Due to this guide being built from the Japanese game, all the required responses will not be verbatim but rather in 'A, B, C, D' format. In other words, the first response from the top is "A," the second response is "B," and so on. Be wary that some responses might actually have the letters A, B, C, and D in the in-game text - particularly those related to class questions. I would hate to tell you to choose response B (the second option) and you choose response D (the fourth) because the in-game text in someway associated the letter B with that response, if that makes sense. A class question early in the game has this conflict in the Japanese version.

    RANDOMNESS IN CRAFTING

Persona 5's crafting system allows you to make items at the work desk in your room that can be used inside of Palaces and Mementos. Time will pass you when you do this and you will earn points towards your Proficiency.

The challenge of this activity as it pertains to this guide is that the amount of points you earn are random. On most occasions, the hero will earn two points towards his Proficiency after crafting. However, on occasion, Morgana will tell the hero that he is in a good rhythm while making items. This will result in earning three points towards Proficiency. The goal is to almost always achieve Proficiency +3 during these events, so you will need to save right before the activity and may need to reload your save file and try the event again to achieve it. These occasions are noted in the walkthrough. As your overall Proficiency stat increases, the probability of you achieving +3 during these events rises.

    ROMANCE

A selling point of Persona's social system is of course romance. Just as it was in the original versions of Persona 3 and Persona 4, P5's male protagonist can only form intimate relationships with female characters. In all, there are nine ladies he can date. Be aware that there is also a PlayStation trophy for entering at least one intimate relationship, if that matters to you.

I bring this up to tell you that for the most part, regardless of whom you choose to date (if anyone), you will get to see all their optional romantic scenes if you so choose. The only exceptions to this are Sadayo Kawakami and Hifumi Togo who will each sacrifice one possible scene.

Tae Takemi presents a unique problem to the schedule if you choose to date her as you will see later in the game. If you have your eye on her before playing, know that there will be a complication, but not one that can prevent you from still accomplishing everything on the schedule. These issues are outlined in the schedule.

Additionally, to see other optional scenes, it may require the player to abandon earning the book reading or gaming trophies. These will both be earned near the end of the game. Obviously, they are by no means required. I noted in the walkthrough when the player can begin to ignore these suggestions and choose to hang out with their special ladies instead. Optional romantic scenes include asking your lover to come to your room and riding the Ferris wheel at Odaiba Kaihenkoen.

    STRENGTH CONFIDANT

The Strength Confidant with Caroline and Justine acts just as the Empress Social Link with Margaret did in Persona 4. The player will be given challenges to bring them certain Personas with certain skills. Just as it was with Margaret, this takes no ‘in-game' time. It can be completed the same day it is started (as early as May in NG+) or can be started and finished on the final playable day of the game.

I should let you know ahead of time that in Persona 5 when the Palaces are cleared, they can never be returned to (I apologize if this is a spoiler to someone). This is important to know because it means that when progressing through a Palace, you want to make sure you are earning the masks of every Persona that you come across. This will make your efforts in fusing, having the appropriate arcana for the Confidant events, and finishing this Confidant much easier.

Mementos on the other hand can be visited at any given time. There is some overlap between Personas that appear in the Palaces and the ones that appear in Mementos. However, there are some Personas that only appear in the Palaces, some that only appear in Mementos, and of course, many more that can only be obtained through fusion.

I've placed the guide to this Confidant here at the beginning so that the player (who chooses not to use the table of content or keyboard shortcuts) need not scroll to the bottom of the guide and potentially spoil themselves on details such as the owners of the game's final Palaces, when the last boss fight takes place, etc. Familiarize yourself with the Personas you will need as most of the fusion materials can be had through acquiring them in Palaces or Mementos.

    PROLOGUE

Persona 5's prologue begins with a glimpse into the hero's future and a key event that shapes the story. The first several months of the game will be presented in an omnibus format leading up to the events in the prologue. Don't worry too much about what's happening. Everything will become clear in due time.

In the prologue you will be given the option to set your difficulty and name your hero. Currently, the hero does not have a strictly canon name, but the name given to him in in the Persona 5 manga which released in September of 2016 is written 来栖 暁, or "Akira Kurusu" - first name, last name. The kanji for Akira, 暁, means "daybreak" which ties into the title of the one episode anime from 2016, Persona 5 the Animation: The Day Breakers.

    Afternoon

    • Check out Captain Kidd book at Shujin High School library
    • Take convenience store job at Shibuya Station
    • Buy 1 'plant nutrient' at Flower Shop at Shibuya Station underground mall.
      • The plant nutrients are one of the best items in the game. Using these on the plant in your room will grant points toward your Kindness without passing the time, but the item can only be used once every 16 days. This variant will grant +2 and later there will be a variant that grants +3. For now, only buy one, as you're strapped for cash.

    • Buy crafting materials at Yongenjaya recycling shop
      • It's a good idea to always be stocked on items that you can use for crafting - especially during the summer time of the game where you will be required to craft frequently. In addition to being bought, they are occasionally earned through battle.
    • Now you're free to spend your money as you please. Typically, you will want to hold off on making unnecessary purchases until the same day you are going into a dungeon. Be aware that a limited number of SP replenishing items can be bought at select vending machines throughout the game (like in Yogenjaya and Shujin Academy). These items will sell out but are restocked every week. They're incredibly useful for a playthrough like this where you are being asked to clear as much of a dungeon as possible in a single day.
