"Great game with far too many boring cut scenes"

Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of the Patriots is supposedly the final game in the series (I doubt it) and definitely the best. Kojima has created one of the best looking games to date and kept the "solid" game play while adding new elements as he has done in the previous games. This game is mostly for the fans though, if you haven't played the PS1 game or any of the PS2 games it will make no sense at all. So play some of the old games (especially the first) for some background on the story or read the wiki. Now for the individual elements of the game...

Graphics: 10/10

The best graphics on the PS3 and any of the current gen consoles. Lighting is really well done and shadows look near perfect. Animations are topnotch in game and motion capture did a phenomenal job making all the characters act their age. Dust will kick up behind Snake, snow will stick to him, and he will leave footprints wherever he goes. The textures are the only real letdown. Sometimes you will get really low res textures placed to high res ones and it will look odd, but other then that there is nothing to complain about.

Audio: 10/10

Kojima loves audio and it really shows. Gunshots sound different depending on the type of gun and accessories it is using. All the voice actors do a great job and it never feels like the actors just phoned it in. Snake's camo suit makes all the noises you would expect and when he is moving the environment will make noises depending on what Snake does. Not much else I can say except that the audio is perfect.

Game play: 8/10

The gameplay has always been the weak link in MGS games. The sneaking element is very well done and the new camo element is very cool, but as soon as you start shooting people the game shows it's main flaw. The gun play is clunky and grenades are almost useless. The AI, while better, is still pretty dumb and you can easily kill most enemies. Boss fights force you to use this system which is a bad move because the bosses themselves are really cool and seem like they would have no problem killing a geriatric Snake. But as long as you stay true to the spirit of sneaking and killing as killing as possible the game is very fun.

Cut Scenes: 5/10 (not factored into final score)

I invented a new category for this game because the cut scenes range from ridiculously long and tedious to action packed and interesting. This wouldn't be so bad if there was only and hour or so of these cut scenes but there is EIGHT FREAKING HOURS of them and they constantly interrupt game play and take up to much time. This is the closest a video game has come to being an interactive movie and it should never be done again. Many of the cut scenes don't need to be included in the game and take up too much time(briefings) while the cool ones are too short(Raiden/B&B fights)

Replay Value: 9/10

You will probably play the game 2 or 3 times so you can unlock items/badges and beat the game different ways. There is about 10-12 hours of game play so you can spend a week or so just doing single player things and then there is the online portion of the game. I haven't spent much time with it so I can't give it a fair review but just having the online element will add to the replay value.

Overall: 9/10

A must have game that takes too much of a cinematic approach while leaving the game play behind. Luckily they can be skipped and once you beat the game once you will never have to see them again. Buy it for the online and because there are very few games of this quality ever made
