"Fun, entertaining, and well worth $60"
To begin with, I would have given this game a 10/10, but it isn't perfect, and that's what that type of score entails. If you have played Grand Theft Auto games before, you know what the gameplay is like, but for those who have never played a GTA game, it consists of shooting, driving, fist fighting, blowing stuff up, running over civilians, cops, and hookers.
As said above, it is really enjoyable just screwing around in the city, and with the new addition of the cover system, shooting cops is more enjoyable than ever. If you wish, you can drive into a crowd of civilians, jump out of the vehicle, take cover behind it, and blindfire an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) into the crowd, sending bodies flying across the street. It is things like this that draw people into the GTA games. The driving is alot different in this game, but once you get used to it, it isn't much of a hassle, and being able to shoot in every direction out of the window is awesome. You can even throw grenades out the window!
If you have played the previous entries in the series, you will know the mission structure of this game. The missions consist of driving from point A to point B, fighting your way to pick up an object, and then fighting your way back to a vehicle, driving back to point A while shooting at other cars who are shooting at you car. The main difference is in the larger missions, where there are large hordes of people that you must blow up, puncture, and otherwise obliterate. Due to the cover mechanic and the new detail that body armor only protects you from bullets that hit your stomach and chest, these missions become much more methodical and strategic, instead of the previous run and gun of San Andreas. Not the best mission structure, but good enough, and the story makes you want to keep on going.
The graphics in this game are simply amazing. I would say that some games look better, but when you take into account the massive scale of this game and near zero amount of loading, the graphics are incredible. The textures rarely pop in, the lighting is beautiful, and it is really hard to find two identical civilians.
Now you may be thinking "How would GTA multiplayer work", well let me tell you. There are 16 different game modes, but only about 6 are worth playing. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are a blast, especially if you are playing with friends, and when in freemode, it is a blast just doing crazy things in and around the city. Cops and Crooks is also an awesome gameplay mode, especially with mics and good teamwork. The game mode consists of two teams, the crooks, who start out on foot with one leader who must live, and make it to a specific point on the map. The goal of the Cops is to make sure this leader doesn't make it.
This game is really awesome, but I wish they hadn't taken the tanks out of the game, and left some of the craziness of San Andreas in, but hey, there's always downloadable content, isn't there?
