Much like the 2008 samurai game "Ryuu ga Gotoku: Kenzan", Yakuza: Dead Souls (or "YDS" for short) is a non-canonical "just for fun" spin-off from the main RGG series. It retains the present-day setting of Yakuza 1-4 and the (over)familiar Kamurochou map but throws in a whole bunch of zombies and gives you gunplay - rather than brawling - as your primary combat mechanic. There are no significant SPOILERS in this guide. I do discuss much of the game's content and structure, the hidden trophies and secret unlockables but I don't mention the story's plot. The main body of this guide covers each trophy in the game individually. They're listed in the same order they'll appear on your console's XMB Trophy Collection and grouped into vaguely logical categories. My aim is to state (and clarify) the requirements for each trophy and to share helpful information and tips. I've previously written several other guides for Yakuza games which are also hosted here on GameFAQs/Gamespot. This guide is designed to be viewed using a monospaced (non-proportional or fixed-width) font, preferably Courier New. Some sections of the document will display incorrectly if you are using a proportional font like Times New Roman. ------< OVERVIEW >------------------------------------------------ [Section 02] If you want to get all the trophies you will need to complete three playthroughs of the story - once on any difficulty to unlock Extra Hard and Dead Souls diffs, once on Extra Hard diff (for trophy #7) and once on Dead Souls (for #8). These trophies do not stack so three playthroughs is the minimum number required. It doesn't really matter which difficulty you pick for your first playthrough although a lower difficulty will give a smaller monetary reward at the end (see Section 12 below) and Hard diff would probably serve as better preparation for your Extra Hard game. Personally I went with Normal. You can start your Extra-Hard play as a "Premium New Game" (see Section 03) to carry-over all your abilities, items and money from your previous game. This is also the most convenient route for reaching Level 99 (for trophy #10). There are sixty substories (side-missions) in the game (see list in Section 11). Although the substory trophies (#27-29) only require you to complete forty of these, you will need to finish all sixty to unlock the fight against Amon which is required for Amon's Vanquisher (trophy #9). You don't need to get all of them during the story because you can pick up ones you missed in "Premium Adventure" (see Section 03 again) where you continue playing after the finale. Substory progress is reset in Premium New Game however. If you do all the substories on your first playthrough this will give you a lot of XP (for ability unlocks) and some rare items plus you'll be rewarded with designs to make the most powerful guns (see Section 13). This will give you a good head-start on your Extra Hard game. Similarly the powerful infinite-ammo energy weapon you receive for defeating Amon would be quite handy on Ex-Hard. Dead Souls difficulty cannot be played as a Premium New Game so you're unable to carry over anything from your previous playthrough/s. You might choose to do some/all of the substories on this diff for the experience points and rewards. There are no missable trophies in the game. Any you don't get as you play the story can be obtained in Premium Adventure and Premium New Game. ------< GAME STRUCTURE >------------------------------------------ [Section 03] This section explains several aspects of how YDS works, both during and after your first playthrough of the story. Game ¯¯¯¯ Just like in Yakuza 4 the story is divided into four parts, each subdivided into four chapters. I've used shorthand in referring to these so "Part I-1" indicates Part I Chapter 1 which is followed by Parts I-2, I-3, I-4, II-1, II-2, etc. You play a different character in each part: o In Part I you play as Shun Akiyama o In Part II you play as Gorou Majima o In Part III you play as Ryuuji Goda o In Part IV you play as Kazuma Kiryuu After you've completed Part IV Chapter 4 you'll continue to play as Kiryuu in "Finale: The End" but - unlike Yakuza 4 - you are not given the opportunity to switch between the four characters during this final phase of the story. (This time you'll need to wait until Premium Adventure mode - see below.) During play you gain experience points (XP) and your character's level advances. Each time you level-up you'll gain Soul Points (which can be used to buy new abilities for your character) and your health bar gets longer. When you reach the end of one part of the story you switch to the next character but you retain your level and XP - these carry over from one character to the next. (That's not very realistic but it's certainly pretty handy!) At any telephone (save-point) or inside your "hideouts" you can save your game and manage your inventory - you can move items between your personal inventory and your hideout stash. Like XP, items are also automatically shared between characters so when you reach the end of a "part" all the items, weapons and gear currently in your inventory will be transferred to your hideout stash where they can be collected by the new character in the next part of the story. Your money total carries over to the new protagonist too. In an attempt to contain the zombie threat, large walls are erected in the city to create a quarantine zone; meanwhile residents continue to live their lives as normal outside! You can enter/exit the zone through points marked GATE on your map. Some food outlets, shops and minigame venues will be inside the quarantine zone. If a building's entrance is marked with a red circular prohibition sign this means that it's temporarily inaccessible. If a white "CLOSED" label is shown you can "liberate" the location by clicking on the doorway and clearing a small group of zombies (and usually one "mutant") outside. The doorway into any location you've liberated will be marked with a blue "OPEN" label. As the story progresses, the quarantine zone will expand. More shops and venues will end up inside the zone (so you must liberate them before you can use them), also new routes will open up and old ones will become blocked. The researcher Hasegawa (see trophies #33/34) will send emails to your character's cellphone to update you when new locations need to be liberated and when you need to start using a new gate to access the zone. Completion rewards and bonus items from DLC can be collected from Bob B inside Naomi's Palace which has relocated since Yakuza 4. It's now on Nakamichi Street, on the east side immediately north of Club Sega. There are several mentions in this guide of the many valuable/useful "goodies" which you can collect from Igita in Kamiyama's truck. In order to have access to these you will need to have either the European edition of YDS or the US edition with the appropriate DLC pack. I suspect that the further free items of the Apocalypse Fun Packs are available on the same basis. [thanks to neosnake101, TheZenNinja and RKO_ON_RAW for the Igita info] Post-Game ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Finishing the story on any difficulty unlocks the following four features. You will also be prompted to create a Clear save file - make sure you do this and take care not to overwrite any other saves. (You can have up to thirty separate save files for the game if you want!) o Premium Adventure PA mode allows you to load up a Clear save and continue playing after you've beaten the story. All your progress is retained so you can work on completion of substories, hostesses, minigames or anything else you missed while playing through the game. Your base of operations in Premium Adventure mode is the Prosthesis Shop on the eastern branch of Senryou Avenue (you will have been introduced to this location during the finale of your first playthrough). The following features are available at the shop: - Use the door at the rear to access a "hideout" where you can heal for free, access your items stash and load/unload your inventory, replay cutscenes, create/update a normal save file, view basic stats and change outfits for the four main characters and Haruka. (You start PA mode with an empty inventory and only your default weapons so remember to load up and equip some gear/ammo before you move out.) - Speak to any of the other playable characters to switch to them. You'll now be free to switch between all four characters at any stage but you can only do it when you're in the shop. Each time you switch from one character to another your current inventory will be transferred across to the new one. - Speak to Asagi (the soldier) to access Last Adventure where your current character can continue playing the final chapter of their part of the story. You'll need to use this option to complete substories, Subterranea missions and hostesses you skipped/missed before. - Speak to the gunsmith at the counter to access the Scenario Battle mode that lets you replay action stages and boss battles from throughout the story. If you improve on your previous rating you get an XP bonus. - Use the front door to the shop to free-roam with the current character. The zombies and quarantine walls will be gone so you really are free to roam as you please. You'll have full access to all the shops, food outlets and mini- game spots, however substories, Subterranea missions and the hostess clubs are not available in this Free Adventure mode. - Speak to Haruka (the girl) when playing as Kiryuu and you'll be given the option to have her accompany you in the city. She'll stop outside certain shops or game venues and demand that you buy her something or achieve some target in the game. This contributes to the elevation of "Haruka's Mood". Providing you have the proverbial patience of a saint, you can advance her Mood through a tedious series of ranks in return for various rewards. You can check her current rank on the Results screen at your hideout. - Use the laptop on the counter to create a new Clear save file. This is essential if you want to carry-over into a Premium New Game any new abilities, items or money you gain during Premium Adventure. You should make a new Clear save (or overwrite your old one) and then use that when starting your Premium New Game (see below). Additionally you can add Bob Utsunomiya as a partner by speaking to him at Gary's Boot Camp just down the road from the Prosthesis Shop. He's armed with a shotgun named Hanabi which is a version of the incendiary Fireworks Gun. Adding Bob to your partner list is required for Social Butterfly (trophy #32). At Naomi's Palace on Nakamichi Street you can speak to Bob A to access his "House of Extras" including the Endless Subterranea mode which is required for Underground Kings (trophy #11) plus the Extreme Chase Challenge (really Sega?) and Kamurochou Survival Gauntlet games. You can also speak to Bob B there to collect eight numbered Apocalypse Fun Packs which contain a wide range of minigame cheat items and a number of other valuables (twenty-four items in total). I think these require either the Euro edition of the game or appropriate DLC. Finally, saving the most important adddition until last, new bait items will become available in the fishing minigame! o Premium New Game You can use this option to play the game/story again from the beginning. You load your Clear save so you keep all your abilities, level, money, items* and rewards, also your food/drink and modding completion it seems, but any other progress (on substories, minigames, hostesses, etc) will be LOST. In order to add them to your partner roster again you will need to meet the six main partner characters by replaying the substories that unlock them (see trophy #32) but once added they will retain their previous XP levels. In PNG mode you can collect duplicates of any completion rewards you earned in your last game plus the Apocalypse Fun Packs items if available (see above). *You can recover your items once you have access to a hideout or save-point. o Extra Hard difficulty This is the usual unlockable fourth difficulty level. You'll be able to select this when you begin either a New Game or a Premium New Game, the latter giving you a massive advantage as you'll start with all your previous money, items, equipment, abilities, etc. You will need to complete an entire playthrough of the game on Extra Hard difficulty to get The True Ending (trophy #7). o Dead Souls difficulty This is a new addition for YDS. It can only be selected for a New Game so you won't have the benefit of playing it as a Premium New Game. You will need to complete an entire playthrough of the game on Dead Souls difficulty to get Saviour Of Kamurochou (trophy #8). ------< TROPHIES LIST >------------------------------------------- [Section 04] As you might've guessed from the title, this section provides a list of all the trophies available in the game. This is the order in which they appear both on your console's XMB and in the main body of this guide. They're also all "hidden" trophies so look away now to avoid trophy spoilers! 1 Platinum Trophy [Platinum hidden] As always the final trophy you receive will be the platinum. You get this automatically after meeting the requirements of all forty-eight other trophies in the game. 2 Part I Complete [Bronze hidden] Complete the four chapters of Part I with the first character, Akiyama. 3 Part II Complete [Bronze hidden] Complete the four chapters of Part II with the second character, Majima. 4 Part III Complete [Bronze hidden] Complete the four chapters of Part III with the third character, Goda. 5 Part IV Complete [Bronze hidden] Complete the four chapters of Part IV with the fourth character, Kiryuu. 6 Thanks for Playing [Gold hidden] You'll receive this trophy after finishing the story for the first time (on any difficulty setting). The last section of the story after Part IV is called "Finale: The End". Once you've passed that you've completed the game. The trophy will pop at the end of the final credits. If it's the first time you've completed YDS you will unlock Extra Hard and Dead Souls difficulty plus Premium Adventure and Premium New Game modes. 7 The True Ending [Silver hidden] Completing the game on any difficulty (Easy, Normal or Hard) will unlock the option to play on Extra Hard diff. Beat the game on Ex-Hard for this trophy. You'll usually want to use the Premium New Game option to carry over your unlocks, abilities and items from your previous playthrough(s). You might like to take some time to prepare, making the best armour and weapons in your first game to use on your Ex-Hard run. The Optical Camouflage Suit (see Body Armour in Section 13) would save you some time. Although it has a massively *negative* armour value (-99/-99/-99)* it has Predator stealth technology that makes you almost invisible. You can pass normal zombies undetected so it's handy for taking journeys across the quarantine zone. When you do enter combat however you'll want to swap out the stealth suit and equip either training gear (to farm XP) or proper armour. To save time when replaying the game you can set Skip Events to "On" on the Settings menu. This will enable you to skip cutscenes by pressing Start. *The three stats for armour are Defence, Fireproofing and Blastproofing. 8 Saviour of Kamurochou [Gold hidden] Completing the game on any difficulty will also unlock the option to play on the hardest Dead Souls diff. Beat the game on Dead Souls for this trophy. Unlike Extra Hard difficulty, you cannot play Dead Souls as a Premium New Game so you start at Level 1 with no inherited abilities or equipment... :6 Not only that but all zombies are permanently in the "red mist" frenzy mode! The game completion trophies do not stack so you won't get The True Ending (trophy #7) for beating the game on Dead Souls diff (or vice versa). The timer on the QTE button-press for Heat Snipe shots on Extra Hard and Dead Souls difficulties is very short and hard to complete. ShindoKokoro suggests hitting the PS button on your controller as soon as the required button is displayed on the screen (this forces a mid-event pause). This gives you time to get your thumb on the correct button before pressing PS again to unpause. On the ps3trophies.org forum sodacat posted a load of advice for playing on Dead Souls mode. Check it out here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/dealsoulstips The boss fight near the end of Part IV against the flying Basan "prototype" can be frustrating at the best of times but particularly so on the higher difficulties. Significant numbers of zombies will spawn both in the street and from the back of the park. dargondarkfire provides a great tip for this battle - stay in the park and do not kill any of the zombies in the street. Even though they're easy targets, if you leave them the game will soon reach the maximum number of zombies it can handle and then crucially they'll stop spawning in the park. To achieve this you will also need to allow your allies to become incapacitated to stop them shooting street zombies. With no zombies in the park you can remain there for the entirety of the fight without having to worry about constantly getting attacked from behind. dargon adds that you should make sure you have your best armour/accessories equipped during the Basan fight because as soon as it ends you'll go straight into a very tough action stage where you'll need as much defence as possible. The best armour item is the Dragon Flak Vest (see Section 13) which can be made using the design you receive after completing Majima's two Subterranea missions (see trophy #30). In terms of accessories, dargon recommends using the Sugar Daddy Amulet (5/0/0), which is rewarded at the start of your game if you have a Yakuza 4 save file, with several Tiger Skin Belts (4/4/4) which you can buy from the pawnshop. I will add that you can also use the Sunshine Belly Warmer (5/5/5) which is rewarded for a Yakuza 3 save on your PS3. 9 Amon's Vanquisher [Gold hidden] It should come as no surprise to Yakuza regulars that the secret mega-boss is yet another incarnation of Amon, this time Rasetsu Amon ("rasetsu" is a type of evil spirit). You need to defeat him to earn this gold trophy. There are two - not insignificant - requirements to unlock the Amon battle: o Complete all sixty substories (side-missions) There are fifteen substories available to each character in their part of the story. See Section 11 below for a full list and check the walkthroughs in Seiyou_All_Star's guide on this site for full details of each. (Along the way you'll also receive three trophies for completing a total of four, twenty and forty substories.) o Complete all seven Subterranea missions Each character will gain access to the Subterranea dungeon-crawler mode as you progress through the game. Akiyama, Majima and Goda get two missions each and Kiryuu has one. See trophy #30 below for information on when and where this happens for each character and for details on how to complete the sequence and initiate the Amon battle. It should be noted that Kiryuu encounters Amon at the end of his 30-floor Subterranea mission but this is only a (ahem) "brief encounter" and should not be confused with the main event. (I'm pretty sure that you can only fight Amon as Kiryuu too so if you're in Premium Adventure mode you might need to switch characters.) Of course the fight with Amon will be no picnic so proper preparation and tactics are vital. If you haven't already, you might want to take a couple of ability upgrades to increase the number of inventory slots available. You should take a lot of healing items. The best ones are Toughness Infinity which always completely refill your health bar. You'll get one of these in each of the Deluxe Recovery Packs you can pick up for free from Igita inside Kamiyama's truck. You can also collect these as rewards from Hasegawa at Cafe Alps (see trophy #33) in exchange for points (so they're kinda free!). You'll want to take the best armour items you have, or possibly craft some new ones with Kamiyama (see Section 13). The "Body Armour" sequence of mod recipes is very easy to complete (you can get Super Resilient Resin from the Illegal Arms Dealer in the Subterranea or from Hasegawa) and gives you some pretty decent armour. Remember that accessory items often have protective properties too so you can stack them with your main armour. If you've completed Part IV of the story Kiryuu will have acquired his mighty anti-materiel rifle and that packs quite a punch so make sure you take plenty of ammo to make good use of that. You should also consider getting Kamiyama to upgrade the gun for extra ass-kickin' power. Although I decided not to use it (see below), Seiyou_All_Star recommends that you take the Fireworks Gun (the "HANABI Gun" in his guide*) for its knockdown effect. This will require the following: - buy "Fight Like a Pyrotechnician" recipe from Hasegawa - collect SSS Gunpowder (x1) from Igita** (or buy from Hasegawa) - buy Flour (x3) and Pepper (x2) from Poppo Mart on Showa Street - buy Bronze Plate (x5) from a casino or the mahjong parlour - upgrade your Weapon Skill ability to Advanced level - buy Hunting Shotgun from Kamiyama - upgrade the Hunting Shotgun to the Smoking Shotgun - upgrade the Smoking Shotgun to the Fireworks Gun (Remember to bring some leftover shotgun ammo from Part II and to equip the shotgun into one of your weapon slots.) Don't disadvantage yourself with a depleted health bar - make sure you are at full health before entering the quarantine zone (you can heal for free in your hideout in Kamiyama's truck) and get to the manhole on Taihei Street East as quickly as possible, without stopping to fight along the way. I was going to recommend packing a spare battery for your flashlight but I found, when my torch failed after about a minute, that I couldn't use mine! So I assume that the fight is supposed to happen in the dark. Certainly the game provides several visual cues to Amon's location so just watch out for anything that lights up. Sometimes he'll come up and grab you suddenly which is a pain because he sucks health out of you, damaging your character and simultaneously healing himself! Other than that you will know when he's going to use his other attacks because he'll stop running and glow red (so watch out for that). He uses a couple of different ranged attacks. One involves shooting a load of glowy bombs at you - you probably won't be able to evade all of them but they don't do too much damage and if you have enough heat you can Heat Snipe one. In contrast his other attack is *very* powerful. If he glows red and points his right arm at you he's about to fire his energy beam weapon so get ready to dodge. A direct hit from that if you're standing still will knock a *big* chunk off your health bar. Seiyou_All_Star suggests that you use the Fireworks Gun to knock him to the floor and then take a few aimed shots with the anti-materiel rifle to do some decent damage to him. Personally I used a simpler/cheaper tactic - as long as you're facing straight at him you can fire an un-aimed shot with R1 and the basic auto-aim will do the rest, so I just stuck with an unsophisticated "run and gun" tactic with the AMR. Playing on Normal diff I took him down using one box of AMR ammo (plus a handful of Toughness Infinity health-ups). If you die you can restart from a checkpoint so just try to think of it as a learning experience! After two or three failures YDS will offer the option to drop the difficulty of your game. You might find this useful if you have trouble beating Amon but keep in mind this will probably invalidate your run if you're on your Extra Hard playthrough and going for the trophy (#7). After defeating Amon you'll warp back to outside the quarantine zone and get another message from Kamiyama. Go see him and then when you leave the truck you'll receive notification that your reward for beating Amon is available at Naomi's Palace - it's the Satellite Laser!*** Yes, now you have your very own Bond villain's, infinite ammo, one-second reload, multi-beam, auto-targeting, orbital weapons platform, laser death-ray, thing at your disposal. B) *Hanabi is the Japanese word for fireworks. The literal reading of the two kanji characters that make up the word is "flower-fire". :) **Igita sits behind Kamiyama in the truck. He'll give you free stuff if you have the Euro edition of YDS or the US edition with Gamestop DLC. You should find an SSS Gunpowder item in his "Rare Parts (3-Piece Set A)" freebie. ***Your character wields the portable touchscreen laser controller in his right hand. I like to call it "The iPad of Doom". :) 10 Unsurpassed Power [Silver hidden] The requirement for this trophy is to gain sufficient experience points (XP) to achieve Level 99. Your experience and level carry over as you switch from one character to the next during the story so you don't need to focus on grinding one character and instead you can continue to work on this during your entire playthrough (and beyond). You can check your current level on the pause screen and the little yellow bar above your health bar shows your progress towards the next one. XP can be used to unlock "combat" and "basic" abilities for your character(s). The Japanese wiki for the game has a chart showing the extra and cumulative amounts of XP required to advance from each level to the next. --> http://kouryakutsushin.com/ryu-oftheend-wiki/lvup.htm The scientist Hasegawa (see trophy #33) can sell you Yakuza Training Gear for 500 points and this is "rumoured to give you large amounts of experience at the expense of attack power". Specifically it gives a +20% bonus to XP gains and, although it reduces the strength of your attacks, it also gives (6/6/6) armour points. I kept this equipped for pretty much the entirety of my first playthrough on Normal difficulty in which I completed all substories and all Subterranea missions. Even so, by the end I'd still only reached Level 80... Your level carries over into both Premium Adventure and Premium New Game (see Section 03) so you could grind XP in Premium Adventure if you wanted but this would be a pretty slow process and the better option is to roll-over into a Premium New Game (e.g. on Extra Hard difficulty for trophy #7) where you can do everything again and gain decent XP from the main story and substories. You receive XP for each enemy you kill. These are only small amounts but the points will add up over time. Two bulk sources of XP are the action stages that occur during the course of the story and the sixty substories (see Section 11). You'll receive several thousand XP for each one you complete and the amounts increase as you move through the story, so for example Kiryuu gets around 12 or 13 thousand XP per substory completed in Part IV compared to 2 or 3k for Akiyama in Part I. Completing a hostess (getting her up to 20 hearts and doing her final event) gives a 10,000 XP bonus. You'll need to complete all seven girls for Social Butterfly (trophy #32). Playing the Endless Subterranea mode in Premium Adventure can give good XP. You'll need to clear fifty floors for Underground Kings (trophy #11) and this gave me 21,000 XP although it did take about two hours to achieve so, like everything else, it's a slow grind. Finishing a course at Gary's Boot Camp (see trophy #40) with a decent rating will give you a few hundred XP and with repeated training there you'll also unlock a few new skills. Speaking to any person marked with a blue arrow will give you a "memo" with some useful information plus a 500 XP bonus. Consuming food/drink from the restaurants/bars gives a small amount of XP. Forum poster dargondarkfire reports that there is one glitch here where the trophy won't pop if you gain the final amount of XP required from eating or drinking. So when you're (finally) at Level 98 keep an eye on your yellow XP bar - when you're close to ranking-up make sure you avoid eating/drinking. You get far more XP for killing mutants (see trophy #17) than for zombies. If you want to grind for XP, dargondarkfire recommends using Hasegawa's Spec-Ops mission for Kiryuu where he has to kill a small group of Aggro mutants in a small room. With the Satellite Laser weapon - your reward for beating Amon (see trophy #9) - you can complete this mission very easily and in a matter of seconds. A refinement to this technique was added by tenike1 who says that you should press the X button four or five times to make Kiryuu hop backwards and avoid Aggro contact, then let rip with the laser. tenike1 reports that you can grind one XP level in approximately thirteen minutes. dargon suggests a number of alternatives if you don't yet have the Satellite Laser. You can use a shotgun* for the knock-back effect, the Tiger pistol for its infinite ammo (also avoiding the spread of the shotgun which can alert idle Aggros to your presence) or the mighty anti-materiel rifle. Personally I'd prefer to run with an upgraded anti-materiel rifle. With its massive damage and "blast" effect you can get a couple of kills by firing at the very start of the mission (as long as you didn't leave yourself with an empty gun at the end of the previous attempt!) and then simply run and shoot with it, without using L1/L2 to aim. With the shotgun and heavy pistol you really need to stop and auto-aim with L2 for Head Tracking headshots. If you're using a shotgun or AMR you can use the points earned from playing the Spec-Ops mission to buy replacement ammo from Hasegawa. You should also keep an eye on your health and use points again to get Toughness Infinity from her too (or buy food from the cafe). Another benefit of grinding this mission is that you can farm Aggro Medal drops which you otherwise might've been short on if you'd been (sensibly) avoiding Aggros during the game. Also you can sell Blocks of Steel to Kamiyama for 1,500 Yen each. (This doesn't sound like much but you'll soon have dozens of them!) *You can buy a Hunting Shotgun from Kamiyama or pick one up for free with the Densetsu DLC. There are two upgrade mods available (see Section 13) which can boost the damage by 43% and the ammunition capacity by 58%. 11 Underground Kings [Silver hidden] This trophy is awarded for completing fifty floors in the Endless Subterranea game which can be accessed by speaking to Bob A at Naomi's Palace after you have completed the story and entered Premium Adventure mode (see Section 03). If you have the Satellite Laser weapon reward for defeating Amon (see trophy #9) you must leave it in your hideout's items stash. (Alternatively you can just discard it and collect a new one from Bob B afterwards.) Bob will also object if you're carrying the Optical Camouflage Suit so don't bring that. The Endless Subterranea is an extension of the Subterranea missions which you can do during the story (see trophy #30 below). These are like a dungeon- crawler game where you're required to clear a certain number of floors. On each level you have to navigate a randomly-generated network of corridors and rooms to find the ladder down to the next floor. Of course you're not alone down there! There will be a whole host of zombies and mutants for company. Differences ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Although they're very similar, there are a few key differences between the Subterranea missions in the story and the Endless Subterranea mode. o Each Subterranea mission has a fixed number of floors (between 5 and 30) whereas the Endless Subterranea has infinite floors - hence the name! o In Endless Subterranea all zombies will be permanently in "red mist" rage mode so they will attack more quickly and violently. Often a large swarm will trap you so you can't escape - or even pause to use a health item! The unlockable abilities such as Roundhouse Kick and Unarmed Expertise will be useful for "crowd control". Also any weapons or Heat Snipes that can take out a large group of enemies. o When you reach the next ladder in a Subterranea mission, in addition to the option to proceed to the next floor, you're also given the option to escape up to ground level (losing your progress). In Endless Subterranea there is no escape! You keep going until you die. o In the Subterranea missions the Illegal Arms Dealer will appear at random on some floors (in a dead end). He'll be able to sell you ammo, health-ups and batteries plus a few modding ingredients.* If he's on the current floor you'll see the dollar icon ($) on the pause map. The Illegal Arms Dealer does not appear in Endless Subterranea mode so it's vital to choose and conserve your supplies carefully. o Occasionally in Endless Subterranea you'll encounter a tall wooden gate blocking the way forward. These can easily be shot down without having to use free-aim - just point in the right direction and shoot. *Unfortunately the one thing the Illegal Arms Dealer cannot provide is the secret of how he gets the zombies and mutants to completely ignore him! ;) Equipment ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Since they have fewer floors to clear and non-rage zombies, the Subterranea missions during the story are much easier to complete (on Normal difficulty at least). Instead of proper armour I used the Yakuza Training Gear to boost my XP gains. To avoid having to stock-up with ammo I used the handguns almost exclusively - Akiyama's dual-wield pistols in Part I and an upgraded Tiger version of the heavy pistol with the other characters. I took Endless Subterranea a little more seriously. I used the most powerful armour I'd made at the time which was the Ultimate Flak Vest (25/30/50) but I'd recommend that you make the Dragon Flak Vest (40/50/65) to give your guy the maximum protection. Accessory items can be added to your load-out to give beneficial effects and boost your defence stats. Although I didn't discover it until afterwards, the Power Stone Bracelet would be pretty handy as it provides a minor healing effect each time you kill an enemy! You can get this as the top prize in the Normal game at the batting centre (by scoring 2,800+ points) or as part of the Densetsu DLC pack. Since you have a free choice of character for Endless Subterranea (just pick the one you want at the Prosthesis Shop before visiting Naomi's Palace) I went with Akiyama for the dual handguns, this time upgrading them to the top version which is the Elise design. You might as well fill your weapon slots with a range of other guns, favouring those that have been upgraded. I think it's a good idea to pack at least one automatic weapon with a large mag size (SMG or assault rifle) or a shotgun for dealing with large groups. Don't forget to pack some ammo for any non-handgun weapons you want to use. (For details of modding recipes for weapons and gear see Section 13 below.) Throughout the Subterranea missions and Endless Subterranea your characters use a small LED light clipped to their chest. You'll need to bring a supply of batteries to keep this running - you can buy these from the convenience stores in the city (or from the arms dealer in the Subterranea missions). The initial "crude" LED flashlight you receive in the story has a very poor battery life - depending on your speed you might need one battery for every five floors. Later (when you do Goda and Kiryuu's Subterranea missions) you will receive the ordinary and high-efficiency versions of the light which are much less greedy. I got through fifty floors of the Endless Subterranea with only two battery changes but it'd be a good idea to take an extra one or two (i.e. three or four total) to be on the safe side. After armour, accessories, ammo and batteries you should fill the remainder of your inventory slots with health items. The best ones are the Toughness Infinity bottles which you can buy as rewards from Hasegawa (see trophy #33). Don't waste inventory space with weak ones like Toughness Z. You'll probably want to take all the ability upgrades that raise the number of inventory slots you have available. General Info ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You're free to choose how fast or slow you progress through the Subterranea. If you want to farm kills/XP then you'll progress more slowly and need to keep an eye on your supplies of batteries, ammo and health-ups. I'm very much an advocate of moving as quickly as possible. Except for a few rooms (see below) you don't need to kill all the enemies and in fact they'll just keep on spawning anyways! You can make pretty rapid progress simply by running and gunning - literally running and shooting constantly. Running to avoid the enemies behind and shooting (use a pistol for the infinite ammo) to clear a path ahead. (For reference, moving at a decent pace, it still took me just over two hours to clear fifty floors of Endless Subterranea for this trophy.) You'll often end up with quite a large group of zombies right behind you (and it's hard not to imagine the Benny Hill chase music!) but you'll be fine as long as you keep moving forwards. Of course this does become more problematic when you reach a dead end! In these situations try to lead them down one side of the room and then escape down the other and/or use an automatic weapon or an explosive Heat Snipe to cut down a group of them. Sometimes when you enter a large square room you'll be told that you have to clear all the zombies before the exit will unlock. These are usually pretty straightforward - you have plenty of room to manoeuvre so stay mobile and use hit-and-run tactics. You'll receive a health-up as a reward for clearing the room so if you were putting off using a health item it'd be a good idea to use it during the fight as it'll be replaced immediately afterwards. There will be boss fights in a large square arena, usually every fifth floor, and again you need to complete these before you can proceed. On Normal diff I think I only ever faced standard mutants (see trophy #17) as mini-bosses but in the Endless Subterranea I got a "prototype" each time - the Arahabaki and Onraki types from the story. When you're in one of the small square rooms (with four large columns) or in a narrow corridor always check for passageways to the sides. They're very easy to overlook and often the "hidden" way is the correct route to the exit. Sometimes you'll encounter a mighty impenetrable blockade - composed of a few old cardboard boxes and plastic bins! You can't run or jump past these and, since they're at floor level, you can't shoot at them without using the free- aim (L2 in the default controls) which requires you to stop moving. Try to clear your room sufficiently to give you time to take a couple of quick aimed shots at one section of the wall, or use a flamethrower or Molotov to take it out more easily. Each corridor and room is only added to your minimap after you enter it so you can use this to check which areas you've visited already. If you get lost use the pause map for an overview of the current floor. If there's a large mutant like a Meathead or Hermit blocking the corridor you can usually roll past them. This is also good for evading their attacks. Try not to hit the Aggro mutants (the sullen teens with headphones). Their attacks are pretty fierce but if you ignore them they'll ignore you. Avoid taking un-aimed shots if there's one in front of you. The Molotov zombies can be a pain too (ranged attack with area effect) so you will often want to take them down promptly, although they can be useful for taking out barriers, other zombies, each other and themselves. :) Always be ready to make an evasive roll when they throw and, where possible, pick them off from long range using free-aim shots. Take time to check your inventory occasionally. If you drop cheap and common items like Scrap Iron it'll give you free slots to pick up ammo, health-ups and valuable items like Cutie Girl Figures and rare mutant drops. You can save time by reloading your gun/s from the inventory screen - simply click on the ammo you want to use then select the weapon to reload. Any gun with a green number is fully loaded. When you spot a new corridor/junction take a quick look down it - checking for the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel! Sometimes you'll spend (waste) a couple of minutes clearing a large room only to find that the next ladder is in the very next room and you could've easily ran to it! Conversely if you can see in the distance two objects glowing orange or one object glowing cyan you know it's a dead end. Orange indicates an ammunition pick-up (although it'll be for a random weapon, possibly a type you're not even carrying!) and cyan denotes a health item. Both appear in dead ends. ------< CHARACTER TROPHIES >-------------------------------------- [Section 06] Just like in Yakuza 4, each of the four playable characters gets an individual silver trophy which only they can achieve. 12 Akiyama Trophy [Silver] The requirement for the first character trophy is that you score one hundred headshots with Akiyama, your character in Part I of the story. With the default Type A controls you can hold L2 to free-aim with the left stick and press R1 to fire. However as soon as you level-up you can spend one Soul Point to unlock the Head Tracking ability which automatically aims for a target's head when you press L2. The effect is only momentary though so if the target is moving you'll need to press R1 immediately after L2 and then repeat that rapid combo (L2-R1, L2-R1, L2-R1) or just mash both buttons! (If you have trouble getting the Head Tracking ability to work make sure that you're facing roughly toward your target and not too far away.) Each time you score a headshot a little red "head shot" message will appear briefly above the kill count on the right of the screen. It seems not to matter if you score a couple of body-shots on a target first, as long as the "finishing blow" is a headshot. Once you have another five Soul Points available you can buy the Head Lock ability which gives a longer locking time but, if you're focusing on getting headshots, there's a good chance you'll have the trophy by then. I got it during Part I-2 using the standard Head Tracking perk. The Results score screen shown when you clear a stage will show you how many headshots you got during that stage so you can keep track of your progress. 13 Majima Trophy [Silver] The requirement for the second character trophy is that you get one hundred kills using Heat Sniping with Majima, your character in Part II of the story. Since combat in this game is focused on shooting rather than brawling, Heat Sniping replaces the usual Heat Actions. It still works in generally the same way though - when the on-screen bar fills you can deliver a special attack, but you can only use it on objects indicated with a little green icon. You should be able to get this without too much trouble. I got it during Part II-2 while I was working through the substories, taking every available Heat Snipe opportunity I found. However here's a few tips... - upgrading your "Focus" abilities will increase the length of your Snipe Gauge, its refill rate and the range of available heat actions - the standard Binding armour item can be purchased from Kamiyama for just 800 Yen and it "helps the Snipe Gauge recover faster" - remember that the trophy is not for making Heat Snipes but specifically for getting kills with them so make sure there are targets nearby! - Tauriner items restore heat and temporarily boost the refill rate - Staminan items replenish both your heat and your health - causing damage to opponents increases your heat - receiving damage from opponents decreases your heat - being drunk increases your Snipe Gauge refill rate 14 Goda Trophy [Silver] The requirement for the next character trophy is that you destroy one hundred wieldable objects with Goda, your character in Part III of the story. (Aside from the change of character, this is the same concept as the Kiryuu Award trophy in Yakuza 4 and the Compulsive Vandal trophy in Yakuza 3.) Whenever you're in the quarantine zone (or in an action stage) look out for objects you can pick up to use as improvised weapons - they'll be marked with a red triangle when you stand near them. Press O to pick one up (temporarily replacing your equipped weapon) and R1 to attack enemies with it. The counter next to the item's name (under your Snipe Gauge) shows how many hits you can deliver with the item. Once it reaches zero the item is destroyed. Look out for bicycles, crates, shop signs, metal cans, chairs and anything else you can use. Keep attacking with each object until it's destroyed. Buying the Super Grip ability (costs 3 Soul Points) allows you to pick up larger objects like oil drums and motorbikes and use them as weapons too, although it take a lot of hits to destroy a bike. You can also destroy wieldable objects by kicking/throwing them (press O), by shooting them or by driving over them with a vehicle (see trophy #20). With focused effort you can get this trophy during Part III-1 if you want. 15 Kiryuu Trophy [Silver] The requirement for the final character trophy is that you defeat one hundred mutant variants with Kiryuu, your character in Part IV of the story. This refers to the seven different variants of mutants that appear in the game. See Zombie Collector (trophy #17) below for a list - all seven types will be available in the quarantine zone by the time you reach Part IV. I like to use the forklift truck and bulldozer (see trophy #20) to get safe easy kills on the various mutants on central Taihei Boulevard and around the Theatre Square area (respectively) each time I enter the zone. You can also use the baseball launcher on Shichifuku Street (south of the batting centre) to fire grenades at mutants. I got this trophy in dramatic style with a Heat Snipe on a group of explosive barrels that took out a nearby Hermit. :) I got it in Part IV-2 shortly after completing the fourteen substories that are available then (see Section 11). I didn't make any major effort on farming - I just killed most mutants that I encountered as I was going about my business, making good use of vehicles. If you're going for all the trophies and for some reason you don't have this one by the time you've defeated Amon (see trophy #9) then you can use the Satellite Laser to give very easy kills on mutants roaming the city. ------< COMBAT TROPHIES >----------------------------------------- [Section 07] 16 Zombie Hunter [Bronze] You get this trophy for killing one hundred zombies so you should get it very early in the story (like in Part I-2). 17 Zombie Collector [Bronze] For this one you're required to kill each mutant variant at least once. There are seven different types to collect! You can see details for each one you've met by going to Missions \ Directives \ Intel \ Mutants \ Types. When you kill a mutant it always drops an item you can collect. Sometimes this will be an item that is unique to that species and which can be used as an ingredient to mod novel accessory items. (see trophy #37 and Section 13) The various mutant species are introduced as you progress through the story. I've listed them below in the order in which they appear along with one or more locations where you'll find them following their introduction. You'll get plenty of opportunities to kill all of these so this trophy is essentially unmissable. It'll just take a little time to complete since you won't encounter the final two species until Part III of the story. Meathead - This is a bulky mutant with grossly over-developed muscles. It's slow and effectively armoured but vulnerable to headshots. They'll start appearing from Part I-2 of the story. Thereafter you can find a Meathead outside the Volcano pachinko parlour, just south-east of Theatre Square. Unique drop: Meathead Belt (but usually drops Block of Steel) Cry Baby - This is a young girl who will never attack you but continually summons more zombies to the area by shrieking. You'll encounter your first one in Part I-2. After that you'll find a Cry Baby in the random "sports room" located under the Millennium Tower which you pass through when you use the first gate at the back of the tower to access the quarantine zone. Unique drop: Cry Baby Barrette (but usually drops Scrap Iron) Monkey Boy - This looks like a skaterboarder with a helmet, kneepads and elbowpads. They run around very quickly and then either pounce on you trying to eat your face or slide to sweep your legs. After their introduction towards the end of Part I-3, Monkey Boy mutants will spawn in the Millennium Tower sports room, down in the Showa Street underground mall and along Tenkaichi Street. Unique drop: Monkey Boy Helmet (but usually drops Scrap Iron) Fattie - This is a fat zombie with a distended belly. If killed with a body-shot it omits some sort of weird gas that causes nearby zombies to go into berserk mode. These are introduced just after the start of Part II-1. After that you can find one on Tenkaichi Street. Unique drop: Fattie Fork (but usually drops Elastic Alloy) Aggro - These are youths with big headphones and sleeveless hooded tops that reveal their tattoos. Thanks to those big headphones, they won't notice you until you attack them but once they've spotted you they'll bring out their quickfire martial-arts techniques. These start appearing after the boss fight early in Part II-1. You'll find one near the entrance to Mach Bowl on Theatre Alley. Unique drop: Aggro Medal (but usually drops Block of Steel) Diptera - This species has dark scaly skin, clawed hands/feet and wings which they use to fly and hover. They attack by spitting acid. After being introduced a little way into Part III-1 you can find one near the tanker truck in Theatre Square. Unique drop: Diptera Necklace (but usually drops Elastic Alloy) Hermit - The final type of mutant has a chunky, dark grey, rocky coating all over its body. This functions as excellent armour although the Hermit is vulnerable to fire (and you'll receive the Steamed Vegetable trophy (#22) if you can kill one using fire while its armour is still intact). Also they can (and will) curl into a big ball like a hedgehog and roll themselves at you. Hermits are introduced in Part III-1 shortly after the Diptera. You'll find one on central Taihei Boulevard near the quarantine wall at the top of Nakamichi Street and the tank. Unique drop: Hermit Amulet* (but usually drops Block of Steel) If you want to check your mutant kill counts just go to your hideout (i.e. the door inside Kamiyama's truck), pick Results then press left or right to see a screen that shows your mutant kill stats broken down by species. *I killed a couple of dozen Hermits in Part III but didn't start getting the Hermit Amulet drop until Part IV. I might just have been unlucky I guess, but if you don't get any in Part III either don't worry about it. :) 18 Recycler [Bronze] With no random battles or coin-lockers this time to supply you with random items (for modding) the developers decided that your opponents would drop objects after you kill them. You need to collect 100 items for the trophy. You'll find that you often collect these without even trying but remember to look out for little twinkly spots on the ground (during/after a fight) which indicate an object you can pick up. Just walk over it and the item will be added to your inventory if there's space. If the twinkle has a little halo around it then the item is one of the rare unique drops from a mutant (see trophy #17). If you see hearts floating over it then it's a valuable Cutie Girl Figure (sell it to Kamiyama for 50k Yen). These would quickly fill your limited inventory slots but fortunately if you collect a duplicate of an item you're already carrying it'll be added to the same slot, so for example if you've picked up six Scrap Iron items they will all be grouped together in a single slot. There is a limit though, each slot can only hold ten dropped items so 15 identical items would require two slots and 22 would need three, etc. Buying additional inventory slots (by spending SP on the appropriate Basic abilities) will be helpful here. Try to avoid discarding items if possible as most of them will be useful for modding weapons. Once you gain access to a hideout and to the telephone save-points you can manage your inventory and send items into storage to clear some inventory space. This is one of those achievements that will come naturally in time just by playing the game. If you want to make more of an effort just remember to look out for the twinkles and then walk over them. Also you could focus on hunting mutants (see trophy #17) as they always drop an item when they die. 19 Old-School [Bronze] Although the emphasis is on gunplay this time, you can still employ some of the traditional brawling techniques for which the Yakuza series is known and that includes being able to pick up improvised weapons to use in a fight. Deliver ten finishing blows with "wield-able objects" to get this trophy. Such objects include baseball bats, poles, signs, crates, barrels, trolleys and (personal favourite) bicycles and they'll be indicated with a small red triangle above when you stand nearby. Press O to pick one up and then you can either press O again to throw it or (preferably) press R1 to attack with it. The display at the top-left of the screen will show both the name of the object and how many strikes you can deliver before the item is destroyed. You need to destroy one hundred such weapons to get Goda's trophy (#14). 20 Road Rage [Bronze] At several locations inside the quarantine zone you'll find a vehicle which you can enter and then either use its mounted weapon or actually drive it around. You'll get this trophy once you've got ten zombie roadkills using the bulldozer and/or the forklift truck. You'll be able to obtain this in Part II when a bulldozer appears in Theatre Square, off the north-east corner near the Subterranea manhole. Don't worry if you missed the opportunity to use it when you first passed through the square with Majima, it'll still be there when you re-enter the quarantine zone. It's easy to pick up ten kills off the zombies that spawn there. Goda gains access to a forklift truck during an action stage in Part III-1. Picking up ten roadkills here is pretty much unmissable but if you want to use it again you can find it later in the same place - in the back-alley immediately south-west of the Kotobuki drugstore. Most usefully, both vehicles give one-hit insta-kills on most mutants, even the armoured Hermits and airborne Dipteras. The muscle-bound Meatheads do require a second hit though. 21 Nice Try [Bronze] The requirement here is to complete a Heat Snipe shot on a projectile thrown at you by an enemy. You'll have Molotov cocktails thrown your way by a couple of zombies in the quarantine zone (there's usually one outside the remains of the Poppo Mart on Tenkaichi St, south of Matsuya) but you'll probably find that these aren't marked with the Heat Snipe icon. The trick here is that you can upgrade your Snipe Gauge to unlock new types of Heat Snipe. As your gauge extends you'll see that each new segment is a different colour and this corresponds to the colour of the heat action icons that appear on viable targets. To be able to Heat Snipe a thrown projectile you need to upgrade your Snipe Gauge to the second level so skip to your Abilities menu and buy "Max Focus: Ultra" (costs 3 Soul Points) to upgrade to Level 2. If you don't have enough SP you'll have to wait until you've levelled-up enough. Now once you've filled the second segment of the gauge you'll be able to make a Heat Snipe on a projectile. Find a zombie with Molotovs, stand facing them and wait until a projectile is actually in the air* coming towards you. Then press Triangle to initiate the heat action, followed quickly by R1 to confirm your target and then complete the QTE (button-press reflex test). *The Heat Snipe icon appears before the Molotov is thrown so make sure you wait a moment until it's actually in flight. 22 Steamed Vegetable* [Bronze] Your objective here is to kill a Hermit mutant (see trophy #17) using fire and without the mutant first losing its rocky armoured skin. You won't be able to get this trophy until Hermits are introduced to the game in Part III. This is pretty simple to get even using the basic Molotov cocktail. You can pick these up from the ammo cache on Suppon Street or buy them from Kamiyama. Once you've found a Hermit I'd recommend taking out any nearby zombies first so you have less to think about. Once the other targets are eliminated you can concentrate on the Hermit. If you can find a spot where you can work from behind a barrier or down a narrow gap where the Hermit can't go then that's ideal. Then you just need to hit it with your Molotovs. Once equipped and selected, you can use L2 to aim your throws. It should only take two, maybe three, Molotovs to kill it. You can do this on Taihei using the pedestrian barriers for cover or at the back of the Millennium Tower using the low wall between the conifer trees. You could also kill a Hermit using a flamethrower - there are plenty of both (Hermits and flamethrowers) in the Subterranea missions (see trophy #30). *Surely they should've named this trophy "Kill it With Fire"...? :( 23 Oh, the Humanity!* [Bronze] For this trophy you need to complete a Heat Snipe shot on a gas tanker. You'll notice the mini tanker truck in the Theatre Square pretty early in the story but (as with trophy #21) it won't be a valid target for a Heat Snipe. This time you have to upgrade your Snipe Gauge to the third level so (if you haven't already) you'll need to buy the ability "Max Focus: Ultra" (costs 3 Soul Points) to upgrade to Level 2 and then "Max Focus: Ultra -> Epic" (costs 5 SP) for Level 3. Once you've filled the third (blue) segment of your gauge you'll be able to make a Heat Snipe on a tanker. Make sure you're positioned on the left side of the truck so you get a clear shot on the nozzle. In Part II of the story two additional tanker trucks appear - outside the front of the Millennium Tower and at the T-junction on Park Boulevard (north of the Kanrai restaurant). *Sadly there are no airships to snipe. 24 Golden Brown [Bronze] The requirement here is to kill fifty zombies using fire. Once you have access to the Subterranea (see trophy #30) you'll find a number of flamethrowers (and chainsaws) you can use - just look out for the O button icon. Since there are loads of enemies in a confined space it's very easy to pick up the fifty kills you need. I like to use the flamethrower in short bursts as I advance, giving a balance of "firepower" (heh) and mobility. If you want to get the trophy at an earlier stage of the game, I found that a very effective (and free!) way to get fire kills was to pick up metal cans (press O) and use them as a melee weapon (press R1 to attack) on a group of enemies. After just a couple of strikes the can breaks and produces a patch of fire that's big enough to cover several targets if they're bunched close together. You'll usually find a pair of metal cans at the western end of Theatre Square inside the quarantine zone and sometimes on Suppon Street. You can also use Molotov cocktails. Kamiyama (the chunky fellow with the big armoured truck) can sell you these (ten for 3,500 Yen*) or you can collect some for free each time you pass the SDF ammo dump on Suppon Street. After you've invested a total of 300k Yen in Kamiyama's workshop (see trophy #39) he can sell you incendiary grenades too (ten for 7,000 Yen*). In Part II a mortar appears at the road junction in front of the Gelateria. You can use this, choosing between three types of ammo including incendiary. You can also start small fires by performing a Heat Snipe on some explosive targets, by destroying a metal can or oil drum by throwing/kicking it and by shooting at an enemy who's using Molotovs (although that might not count). At Kamiyama's workshop you can make a shotgun with a burn attribute called the Fireworks Gun although it takes a little effort to do it (see trophy #9 above for details on how to make it). This will set zombies on fire although the blast is so strong it'll knock you down when used at close range! Hasegawa gives you a Directive for getting fifty kills using fire so you can check your progress under the Missions \ Directives sub-menu. *After investing a cool one million Yen with him he'll apply an 20% discount which makes the Molotovs 2,800 Yen and incendiaries 5,600 Yen. 25 My Eyes! [Bronze] The requirement here is to daze fifty zombies using stun grenades. After you've invested an initial 100k Yen in Kamiyama's workshop (see trophy #39) he can sell you stun grenades (ten for 2,000 Yen).* (With the Densetsu DLC you can also collect ten free stun grenades from Bob B at Naomi's Palace in the Emergency Supplies 05 item set although you will probably need slightly more than that for the trophy.) Once those are available you can get the trophy in a couple of minutes. Just buy a few sets of stun grenades (remember to equip them!) and visit Hasegawa to run a Spec-Ops mission - I did it on Akiyama's "100 headshots" one which has large groups of zombies in a confined space. I wasn't sure how many I'd need so I bought a bunch of grenades but only used fifteen in the end. The default throwing range for grenades is quite long so either learn to work at that distance or hold L2 to aim your throws - and try not to stun yourself by hitting a nearby zombie! If you have the 100,000 Yen available but don't want to commit to investing it with Kamiyama just save your game first, do the upgrade, buy the grenades, get the trophy and finally reload to restore your cash. dargondarkfire notes that there is also an option to use "stun shells" in the mortar that appears outside the Gelateria in Part II. You can run around to get a group of zombies chasing you then lure them to the mortar. *After investing a cool one million Yen with him he'll apply an 20% discount which makes the stun grenades 1,600 Yen per ten. ------< PROGRESS TROPHIES >--------------------------------------- [Section 08] The next few trophies are awarded for making progress in certain aspects of the game. If you can think of a better name for this section please let me know! :) 26 Heavily Armed Bank [Bronze] The requirement for this trophy is that you have 10 million Yen or more in cash. You will probably need to liquidate your assets (i.e. sell all your stuff) so you should >SAVE< your game, then sell everything* to get the money (and the trophy) and finally reload from that save to restore your inventory. If you're enjoying the gambling games or making good use of the gambling cheat items then you'll need to convert your chips/tags into prizes first (and then sell them too). Make sure you always select the metal plate items when you do this because most other items sell for half their true value! Kamiyama generally pays 20% less than the Ebisu pawnshop too so only sell to him any items that the pawnshop won't take. You might want to avoid any major expenditure until you've got this trophy - for example buying fancy gifts/drinks for the hostesses, upgrading Kamiyama's truck, buying/modding expensive weapons, etc. On my first playthrough on Normal difficulty I completed all substories and Subterranea missions, took the mahjong tournament prizes once (and won a few quick games on the mahjong gambling tables) and tried to be fairly sensible with spending. By the time I'd got to Finale: The End (the last bit of the story after Part IV) my personal fortune could be broken down as follows: Cash = 1,068,979 Yen 471 random items to sell at pawnshop = 3,067,784 Yen 73 Cutie Girl Figure items (Kamiyama pays 50k Yen each) = 3,650,000 Yen one SR Love Shine Figure item (Kamiyama pays 150k Yen each) = 150,000 Yen 414 random mod ingredient items to sell to Kamiyama = 1,614,050 Yen 33 weapons and grenades to sell to Kamiyama = 341,880 Yen 286,200 pts from mahjong to exchange for plates and sell = 286,000 Yen ---------------- 10,171,693 Yen ---------------- So I was easily able to achieve the 10 million target without even having to use any of the points I'd earned with Hasegawa. Despite buying a few items from her I still had over 63,000 points remaining which is enough to buy 63 Gold Plates with a combined (pawnshop) resale value of 6.3 million Yen. I didn't even touch any of the huge list of valuable freebies you can collect from Igita in Kamiyama's truck either. The Platinum Plate, Gold Plate, Ruby, three Diamonds and six Dragon items alone are worth a total of 1,150,000 Yen at the pawnshop and Kamiyama will pay a total of 250,000 Yen for the SR Love Shine Figure and two Cutie Girl Figures. He has a load of rare ingredients as well plus several cheat items which would enable you to make massive amounts of money from the gambling minigames (see details in Section 12). Just remember if you're selling stuff you want to keep you must >SAVE< before you do all this. And don't overwrite your save afterwards! If necessary you can also make large amounts of money from completing the story and using the gambling cheats. See Section 12 for tips on making money. *Don't sell your gambling cheat items if you want to use them to make up the remainder of the money required! Also take care to create another, separate, save if you intend to (ab)use that at the casino (reloading if you lose). 27 Substory 4 [Bronze] Awarded for finishing four substories. (see trophy #29) It's possible to get this trophy as early as Part I Chapter 3 (with Akiyama) as there are five substories available in that chapter (see Section 11). 28 Substory 20 [Bronze] Awarded for finishing twenty substories. (see trophy #29) If you complete all substories as soon as they become available you will get this trophy during Part II-2 (with Majima). 29 Substory 40 [Bronze] Awarded for finishing forty substories. Each of the four main characters has fifteen side-missions called substories. The requirements for this trophy and the previous two are that you reach a conclusion in four, twenty and forty substories in total. You can either pass or fail these - you just need to reach the end of each mission. Complete details for all sixty substories are beyond the scope of this guide so I refer you to the handy walkthroughs in Section 14 of the comprehensive Dead Souls guide by Seiyou_All_Star that's also available on this site. You can use the substory lists in Section 11 of my guide to cross-reference the English translations of the Japanese substory titles in the walkthroughs with the titles used in the Euro/US editions of Yakuza 4. If you prefer not to use a guide you can at least benefit from the handy new feature whereby substory trigger locations are marked with a white circular question-mark icon on the minimap. They will first start appearing after you leave the medical clinic in Part I-3. To check your progress use the Missions \ Substories option on the pause menu which will list all the substories that you've found so far. For active ones it will explain the current situation and for ones that have ended it will show whether you either "completed" or merely "finished" them. I always like to undertake all substories as soon as they become available. If you lack my OCD then you also have the option of doing any or all of them in Premium Adventure mode after completing the main story (see Section 03). Six of the substories each unlock the six standard partner characters who are required for the Social Butterfly trophy (#32). Also one of Goda's substories unlocks a food outlet that's required for Vigilante Gourmet (trophy #35). Completing all fifteen substories for any given character earns you a reward. Each time you get a mod recipe to create the final upgrade for the unique personal weapon of the character, i.e. Akiyama's dual-wield pistols, Majima's shotgun, Goda's Gatling gun or Kiryuu's anti-materiel rifle. It is necessary to finish all sixty substories (and all seven Subterranea missions) to access the battle with uber-boss Amon for trophy #9. If you complete all substories as soon as they become available you will get this trophy during Part III-2 (with Goda). 30 Kamurochou Spelunker [Bronze] You get this for beginning your first Subterranea mission within the game. At the beginning of Part I-4 Akiyama will meet Kine (pronounced "ki-ney") who tells him about a mysterious "cursed manhole" on Theatre Avenue. A new option will become available off the pause menu under Missions \ Subterranea and this will show a map pinpointing the manhole location (it's north-east of the Club Sega arcade on Theatre Square). The next time you head into the quarantine zone you'll see the manhole at the top of the stairs out of the Theatre Underground area, exuding a strange and somewhat sinister purple miasma. Simply enter the manhole to get the trophy. (See Underground Kings (trophy #11) for general information and tips on the Subterranea missions.) In order to unlock the encounter with uber-boss Amon (see below and trophy #9) you will need to pass all four characters' Subterranea missions (and finish all sixty substories too). Akiyama has two missions (5 and 15 floors), Majima has two (10 and 20), Goda has two (15 and 25) and finally Kiryuu has one long mission (30 floors). When playing as Majima in Part II of the story Kine will appear next to the quarantine zone gate at the top of Senryou Avenue in Part II-4 of the story. After talking to him you'll be able to access Majima's Subterranea missions through the manhole on Park Alley, on the north side of the roadblock near Kanrai (accessed via Park Boulevard). In Part III Goda can find Kine at the south end of Pink Street (standing next to Poppo Showa) in Part III-4. He gives you an Ordinary LED Light (which has a longer battery life compared to the original one - my first battery lasted me through all fifteen floors of Goda's first Subterranea mission and the first three of his second one)) and then reveals the location of the next manhole - it's at the top of the map in the Hotel District (a long walk from the quarantine zone entrance - too bad the taxi service is suspended!), specifically in the top-right section of the H-shaped street layout there. After completing Part IV Kiryuu encounters Kine at the same place on Pink Street. Following a cutscene you receive a High-Efficiency Light (which can last you all thirty floors of Kiryuu's Subterranea mission if you're quick) and the location of the final manhole: at the end of Taihei Boulevard by the eastern edge of the map (it's partially obscured by a fallen building on the south side of the street). (Kiryuu's single Subterranea mission culminates in a minor skirmish against Amon which is just a brief appetizer for the main fight to follow. Amon has minimal health in this encounter but he still has his powerful energy weapon so take care. Watch him closely so you can dodge his attacks and use your remaining health-ups to maintain your health levels. The laser can deliver heavy damage with just a single blast and if you get killed you will have to complete all thirty floors again!) These missions can take some time to complete, although you'll gain speed and confidence with practice. Your time is rewarded however because - as well as earning XP, passing Directives (for Hasegawa points), maybe finding a couple of valuable Cutie Girl Figures along the way and getting a few free items at the end - you will also receive a prize when you complete all the Subterranea missions for each character (i.e. one for Kiryuu or two each for the other guys). These are special modding recipes and you can pick them up from Bob B at Naomi's Palace on Nakamichi as usual. Remember to return to Kine after reaching the end of each Subterranea map in order for the game to officially recognise your mission completion. If it was your character's first mission then this will also unlock their second one which you access through the same manhole. After you complete Kiryuu's mission Kine will helpfully relocate to Purgatory under Kamurochou Hills so you'll need to hunt him down there. You'll find him at the Florist's mansion (over the bridge at the far end). Once you've completed all seven Subterranea missions and all sixty substories you'll get a message from Kamiyama telling you there's a visitor for you at his truck (it's Kine). Head there and you will also get a fax message from Amon cordially inviting you back into the Subterranea for a proper showdown. After preparing, you'll need to use the manhole on Taihei Boulevard East but the good news is that you don't have to clear thirty floors again - you will be given the option to go straight to the Amon encounter. (see trophy #9 for details of the Amon fight) 31 Start of Something Good [Bronze] This is awarded for acquiring your first partner. Once you have a partner you can choose to have them escort you when you enter the quarantine zone. They have their own level/XP and unlockable abilities and you can even upgrade their weapons (invest in Kamiyama to unlock the recipes - see trophy #39). The earliest you can get this trophy is in Part I-3 by completing Akiyama's 'Big Daddy Part 1' substory to meet Guy Kendo. The mission is triggered by talking to Kazumi near the zombie-proof quarantine wall along the west side of Theatre Square, east of the bowling alley. She'll inform you that Kendo is waiting for her inside the quarantine zone, in Theatre Square. Once you find him there you can agree to escort him back out of the zone. Doing that will complete the substory and unlock Kendo as your first "Perfect Partner". Once you have a partner available they can join you on your adventures in the quarantine zone. Also you can go to Abilities \ Partner off the pause menu to view their stats and equip their special abilities. Presumably you're not restricted to Kendo and you could get this trophy by unlocking any of the fourteen partners (see next trophy). 32 Social Butterfly [Bronze] There's a total of fourteen partner characters in the game and you have to unlock all of them for this trophy. Firstly there are six partners available from substories: o Kendo - unlocked with 'Big Daddy Part 1' substory in Part I-3 trigger: speak to Kazumi between Mach Bowl and the Theatre Square wall o Marina - unlocked with 'Lifesaver Part 1' substory in Part I-4 trigger: speak to two Elise employees near the Millennium Tower steps o Kurotaka - unlocked with 'Zombie Cop Part 1' substory in Part II-2 trigger: visit Gary's Boot Camp after Majima's 'More Zombening' substory o Junya - unlocked with 'The Cowardly Warrior Part 2' substory in Part III-2 trigger: meet Junya in Kamiyama's truck and buy a gun for him (to complete Part 1 of the substory sequence) then source the items he requires (from Kamiyama and the pawnshop) and take them to Gary's Boot Camp o Arase - unlocked with 'Arase Returns Part 1' substory in Part IV-2 trigger: walk past Volcano then enter the theatre to the east of the square o Date* - unlocked with 'A Day in the Life of Date Part 1' story in Part IV-2 trigger: enter the Sky Finance building on Tenkaichi Street via the rear (If you can grind all six of the above partners to Level 20 you'll receive a recipe for the Golden Pistol as your reward - see Section 13.) The next seven partners are the girls from the hostess clubs Jewel and Shine. Each of your four playable characters has one girl at each club apart from Majima who only gets one. (If you are playing in Premium Adventure mode (see Section 03) you will need to use the Last Adventure option (by speaking to Asagi) in order to be able to access the hostess clubs. In Free Adventure they are unavailable.) o Yuna at Club Jewel (available to Akiyama) o Saaya at Club Jewel (available to Majima after meeting at Millennium Tower) o Hina at Club Jewel (available to Goda) o Miyabi at Club Jewel (available to Kiryuu) o Erika at Club Shine (available to Akiyama) o Ai at Club Shine (available to Goda) o Yuria at Club Shine (available to Kiryuu) In order to unlock each girl as a partner you must woo her until her heart meter reaches the maximum twenty hearts and then finish a brief story event. You can raise her heart count by making the best dialogue, food and drink choices; taking her on a date; buying her gifts; etc. Having to get all seven girls to twenty hearts makes this a tough, slow, expensive bronze trophy! :6 You will however also receive the Lucky Binding as a final reward. Seiyou_All_Star has a complete guide to this in Section 26 of his YDS guide. If you want to see the dialogue in full try running the Japanese wiki through a translator - I'd use the built-in translation function in Google Chrome. The results will be far from perfect (!) but the translations will usually be good enough to recognise a question and the three responses are always listed in the same order as the English game. --> http://kouryakutsushin.com/ryu-oftheend-wiki/caba.htm (The seven girls are listed in the table at the top of that page in the same order as my list above. There are several items that will help you earn hearts with the hostesses so be sure to get as many as possible and equip them (taking ability upgrades to increase the number of accessory slots you have). - Sugar-Daddy Amulet ("helps you chat-up the hostesses") source: initial reward for having a Yakuza 4 save file on your PS3 - Lady-Killer Bracelet ("make[s] you popular with the ladies") source: buy from Ebisu pawnshop for 29,800 Yen - Gourmet Bracelet ("said to boost popularity") source: reward for eating everything on the Matsuya menu - Charisma Ring ("said to boost the appeal of whoever wears it") NB: This accessory is an ingredient for the Hit Man's Ring modding recipe (see Section 13) and I imagine that it loses its charisma effect when you use it to make that item. source: reward for doing Goda's substory 'An Artist's Craft' in Part III-2 - Dragon Shirt ("there is something strangely captivating about this shirt") source: reward for Kiryuu completing Hasegawa's final event You can also get heart bonuses for equipping cologne or an expensive watch; some combat items however can have a negative effect so un-equip those first. Another useful item is the Naimaga magazine which you can pick up for free at the MEB on Shichifuku Street, it gives you a 1,000 Yen discount at the clubs. You can also speak to the guy there to get intel on each of the hostesses, although he'll be long gone after the MEB falls into the quarantine zone! Once you have one hostess available as a partner you can enter the quarantine zone with her to fight zombies and receive Getting Some Action (trophy #36). Finally there's one last partner who's only available in Premium Adventure: o Bob Utsunomiya You'll find the Bob inside Gary's Boot Camp in Premium Adventure mode. After the many trials of the hostess girls, you'll be pleased to hear that you can add him to your partner roster simply by talking to him. *It's easy to read this incorrectly as an English word but in Japanese "Date" is pronounced "dar-tey". 33 Mission Complete! [Bronze] After passing Theatre Square in Part I-2 you'll meet a Brash Woman who turns out to be (part-time scientist / full-time babe) Reiko Hasegawa who invites you to assist her with her research. You'll be able to take Spec-Ops missions from her later but at first she just gives you a long list of "Directives" which you can work towards as you play. You can view the list of Directives (and your progress towards each) under Missions \ Directives \ Directives [sic] off the pause menu. Complete any one of these to get this trophy. There are several very easy Directives - for example getting 100 kills, or 25 kills without taking damage, or 100 handgun kills - so you should be able to complete one pretty quickly, although if you've already passed a Directive's requirements (e.g. you've already got 100 kills) the trophy won't be awarded retrospectively - you need to complete a Directive *after* meeting Hasegawa. 34 Hasegawa's Right Hand [Bronze] Every Directive and Spec-Ops mission you complete for Hasegawa (see above) is worth a certain amount of points. Get 5,000 pts in total for this trophy. After your second meeting with Hasegawa (at the start of Part I-3) she can be found sitting at a table in Cafe Alps on the west side of Nakamichi Street. In order to collect the points you've earned you'll need to visit her there and pick the "rewards" option. You can also spend your points on a wide range of prizes including ammo, mod recipes, mod ingredients and, erm, golf clubs. (I'll reiterate that as it's caught out a lot of people, myself included. You don't actually receive your points until you speak to Hasegawa at the cafe!) Earning 5,000 pts shouldn't take you too long at all. I got it while I was still on Part I-3 after a couple of extended sorties into the quarantine zone. If you want to grind it just check the list of Directives and find a few you want to work on. Several Directives are grouped into series so for example you can complete four separate ones for getting 25, 50, 75 and 100 kills with "found" (melee) weapons. There are also Directives for getting 250/500/750/1000 kills without an armour item equipped and 150/200/250/300 kills without using a Heat Snipe so you might want to avoid armour and heat actions for a little while. Your progress on the Directives and your total points earned both carry over when you switch characters at the start of Part II, III and IV. 35 Vigilante Gourmet [Bronze] The requirement for this trophy is to consume any one item of food/drink from each restaurant/bar outlet. Remember, you eat to heal so you can't buy food if your health bar is full.* Therefore you might want to seek out a little combat - either take a quick trip into the quarantine zone or run one of Hasegawa's Spec-Ops missions and take some damage. Alternatively you can use a classic trick from the Yakuza series - take a taxi out to the docks and buy some bait from the fisherman.** If you select a bait item in your inventory you can press X to use (eat!) it and this will cause a small amount of damage thus allowing you to order food. To keep track of your progress use the Challenges \ Food/Drink option off the main menu. This shows how many (and which) dishes and drinks you've bought at each of the outlets. Although the trophy description refers to "restaurants", I can confirm that the bars (Bantam, Shellac, Earth Angel and Cuez) *are* required for this. I deliberately left Bantam until last and didn't get the trophy until I had bought a drink there. The following outlets become available to Akiyama in Part I Chapter 3. Those marked with a hash (#) will end up inside the quarantine zone as it expands and will need to be "liberated" before you can start using them again - just go to the entrance and press X to initiate a small battle with some zombies. Once you've cleared them all the outlet will be available to you again. o Sushi Gin on Showa Street o Cafe Alps on Nakamichi Street o Watami on Nakamichi Street (food menu) o Watami on Nakamichi Street (drink menu) o Smile Burger on Nakamichi Street (use the "eat here" option) o Pronto on Nakamichi Street (cafe menu) o Matsuya on Taihei Boulevard # o Kyushu No. 1 Star on Pink Alley (behind Asia club) # o Kanrai on Shichifuku Street East # o Earth Angel (bar) in Champion District # o Shellac (bar) in Champion District # o Bantam (pub) on Millennium Tower East Street # These next two outlets can be found inside the quarantine zone from Part I-3 onwards and will need to be liberated before use. (However you don't actually need to free the Matsuya on Tenkaichi for this trophy since you can already order from the other branch near the Millennium Tower steps anyways.) o Gelateria Kamurochou on Tenkaichi Street o Matsuya on Tenkaichi Street The next location will become available from the start of Part I-4. You'll need to use the mall entrance at the west end of Showa Street, accessed from the bottom of Tenkaichi Street inside the quarantine zone. As with the two previous outlets, you'll need to liberate the Cuez before you can enter. o Cuez Bar in Underground Mall on Showa Street As usual the Pronto coffeeshop has two menus which are available at different times of day - you can access the cafe menu during the daytime/evening and the bar menu at night. Your first opportunity to purchase something from the latter will be in Part II-4 when you return to street level - use Pink Street to get to the southern half of the map. You can also access Pronto's bar menu in Part III-4 with Goda, in Finale: The End (after Part IV) with Kiryuu or in Premium Adventure mode (at night). Both the daytime and night-time menus at Pronto consist of separate lists of drinks and food but these do not count as separate menus. o Pronto on Nakamichi Street (bar menu) The final outlet is unlocked by completing Goda's substory 'Watamin-chi's Three Principles' - like all his side-missions, this becomes available in Part III-2. Venture into the quarantine zone, speak to the two guys outside Club Sega at the north-east corner of Theatre Square and agree to help them. You'll be required to complete three tasks. Firstly win a (sigh) chase battle to recapture the restaurant's sign. Secondly find their white minivan (just south of Matsuya on Tenkaichi Street) and collect an ingredient to complete their new recipe (pick rice). Lastly rescue one of the dudes from a bunch of zombies on Pink Street and escort him out of the zone. They'll set up a food stall on Nakamichi Street and Goda gets a taste of the new dish but this doesn't count towards completion. You still need to order from the menu as usual, but the good news is it's all free to Goda so you can heal here for free (but sadly Kiryuu doesn't inherit this right in Part IV). o Watamin-chi stall on Nakamichi Street *You can still buy alcoholic beverages when your health bar is full. Remember that being drunk has several effects, most notably your Snipe Gauge refills more quickly and zombie aggression increases. **The cheapest fishing bait items are the worm and corbicula clam. They cost a mere 10 Yen each but they're only available in Premium Adventure mode. 36 Getting Some Action [Bronze] You get this for fighting zombies while partnered with a hostess.* "Completing" any one of the seven hostesses (see trophy #32) will make her available as a partner and you'll be able to request her company when you enter the quarantine zone. This trophy will pop immediately after this. With the appropriate DLC you'll gain the option of changing their outfit and weapon by speaking to Igita in Kamiyama's truck. (Chinese Dress and double pistols FTW!) *One of Akiyama's partners, Marina, is a hostess (she works at his hostess club - Elise) but you cannot use her to get this trophy. It needs to be one of the seven girls you can date at Shine or Jewel. ------< MODDING TROPHIES >---------------------------------------- [Section 09] 37 My First Mod [Bronze] At the start of Part I-3 you'll bump into your old friend Kamiyama next to his armoured truck off the north-west corner of Theatre Square.* You can use the truck as your first "hideout" and Kamiyama offers his usual service of "modding" (modifying or crafting) weapons and armour items (in addition to buying/selling related goods). Create your first mod item to get this trophy. (A quick and cheap way to get this trophy is to buy a Binding (1/1/1 armour) directly from Kamiyama for just 800 Yen and upgrade it to an Improved Binding (2/2/2) for a further 1,000 Yen. No recipe or ingredient items are required.) Modding involves taking an existing weapon (or an armour or equipment item) and paying Kamiyama to craft it into a new item with enhanced (or otherwise special) properties. Sometimes this will also require specified quantities of one or two additional items (which I like to call "ingredients"). You can source base items (for modifying) and mod ingredients from a range of sources in YDS. Be sure to try all the following (and remember to always keep any random items you collect while fighting and exploring). - mutant drops during battle (always) - zombie drops during battle (occasional) - Kamiyama - Hasegawa (trade points for rewards) - substory rewards (including several of the rare "Dragon" items) - Poppo Mart shops (different selection in each branch) - M Store - Ebisu pawnshop - Don Quijote shop - Kotobuki pharmacy - Rune casino in Ryugujo (trade points for prizes) - Fukuma casino in Purgatory (trade points for prizes) - Yoshida Batting Centre - other minigame playspots - item packs from Naomi's Palace (in Premium Adventure and/or with DLC) - numerous free "Parts" sets from Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if available) At the start of the game Kamiyama knows how to make a limited number of mod designs. You can extend his range by investing in his business (see trophy #39) and by acquiring "recipe" items. You can buy recipes from the pawnshop, collect them as prizes from Hasegawa (see trophies #33/34), receive them in certain substories and gain them as rewards for completing each character's substories and Subterranea missions. Acquired recipes can always be viewed in the Valuables section of your items inventory. The modding interface will display any base items you currently own in white. If a design also requires ingredients it will show how many you need and how many you have (for example if it needs eight Scrap Iron and you have thirteen it will say "Scrap Iron x08 (13)" and if you have sufficient this will also be shown in white. If you have the necessary base item and all the required ingredients for a design (and enough available cash) but you're still unable to mod the item it will be because either your Weapon Skill (or Armour Skill) is too low - in which case you'll need to upgrade it in the Abilities sub-menu - or you need to increase your investment in Kamiyama's truck to upgrade his services. *Kamiyama relocates his operations as the quarantine zone expands. Check your map for the green truck icon to see his current position. - in Part II he'll move to the back of the Millennium Tower - in Part III he'll be at the junction of Showa Street and Pink Street - in Part IV he'll be located on Senryou Avenue north of the Karaokekan 38 A Weapon Freak Is Born [Bronze] To earn this bronze trophy you need to create one mod weapon from each of the following weapon categories. - Handgun - Shotgun - Submachine Gun - Rifle - Gatling Gun - Anti-Materiel Rifle - Grenade (Launcher) You can also modify the weapons of all your partners but this is not required for the trophy. You just need to do the first seven categories. I've given details below of the easiest/cheapest designs to pick in order to complete each category. For the Rifle and Grenade sections you have a choice. Usually there are at least two upgrade designs for each gun and the product of the first recipe is required before you can then make it into the next, so for example Majima's Mark IV shotgun can be upgraded into the Meatgrinder, which can then be made into the Crazy Dog, which can become the Exorcist. The first mod for any given weapon generally requires only very common ingredient items like the Scrap Iron, Block of Steel, High-Density Polymer and Elastic Alloy items that are frequently dropped by dead enemies. Each time you mod a new weapon it'll be marked with a red tick in a circle on the list so you can see easily which categories you've already done. You won't be able to achieve this trophy until you've completed Part IV of the story since the Anti-Materiel Rifle category isn't unlocked until then. Kamiyama applies a 20% discount to modding costs after you invest 300,000 Yen in his business (see trophy #39) so I've given before and after prices here. Handgun ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You have a few options available in the handgun category but I'm listing the heavy pistol as it uses the very common Scrap Iron ingredient and I found it to be a pretty useful weapon (remember that all pistols have infinite ammo). (I'd recommend that you also upgrade Akiyama's dual-wield pistols as soon as possible (because they're awesome) but the High-Density Polymer ingredient is slightly less common than the other basic drops and the Silver Plate required (along with the modding fee) makes it a more costly option.) Wk-CP35 Tiger ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: Large Automatic Pistol (automatically acquired by Akiyama) requires: N/A (available at start) ingredients: 8 x Scrap Iron (very common drop) cost: 7,000 Yen (without discount) / 5,600 Yen (with discount) Shotgun ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ If you want a shotgun early you can buy a Hunting Shotgun from Kamiyama (or collect one for free from Naomi's Palace with the Densetsu DLC pack) and modify it but Majima gets his own version for free in Part II of the story. Meat Grinder ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: Mark IV EXP (automatically owned by Majima) requires: Part I complete ingredients: 4 x Elastic Alloy (fairly common drop) 3 x Scrap Iron (very common drop) cost: 20,000 Yen (without discount) / 16,000 Yen (with discount) Submachine Gun ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Akiyama receives the standard SMG during Part I so there's no need to buy a base weapon for this category. Self-Defence Submachine Gun ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: New Balalaika (automatically acquired by Akiyama) requires: N/A (available at start) ingredients: 4 x Scrap Iron (very common drop) 1 x High-Density Polymer (fairly common drop) cost: 8,000 Yen (without discount) / 6,400 Yen (with discount) Rifle ¯¯¯¯¯ If you wait until the (really annoying) boss battle near the end of Part IV you will be able to collect the SWS2 rifle for free from the ammo crate which you'll see directly opposite the park (and your female companion will be most insistent that you take it). This sniper rifle can be used as the base item in the following recipe. Sharp Shooter ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: SWS2 Sniper Rifle (optionally acquired by Kiryuu) requires: N/A (available from start) ingredients: 3 x High-Density Polymer (fairly common drop) cost: 13,000 Yen (without discount) / 10,400 Yen (with discount) However you're free to buy a sniper rifle from Kamiyama at any stage of the story and use it to make the previous recipe or buy an assault rifle for the following one. Since Kiryuu starts Part IV with only a handgun you might want to think about giving him one of these to use. I really liked using the Tojo. YAR-18 Tojo Model ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: 5.56mm Automatic Rifle (buy for 60,000 Yen from Kamiyama) requires: N/A (available from start) ingredients: 7 x Scrap Iron (very common drop) cost: 15,000 Yen (without discount) / 12,000 Yen (with discount) These are both in the Rifle category so either will count towards the trophy. Gatling Gun ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ If you want to you can buy a Gatling gun from Kamiyama (after investing 100k Yen in his workshop) but your character Goda comes with one built in! Modified Kuroganemaru ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: Kuroganemaru (automatically owned for Goda) requires: Part II complete ingredients: 2 x Block of Steel (common drop) 1 x Scrap Iron (very common drop) cost: 22,000 Yen (without discount) / 17,600 Yen (with discount) Anti-Materiel Rifle* ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This section of the modding menus will be entirely empty until after Part IV. In "Finale: The End" (the last portion of the story) Kiryuu will receive the standard anti-materiel rifle and Kamiyama will offer the following recipe. Zombie Masher ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: XK.50 Anti-Materiel Rifle (automatically acquired by Kiryuu) requires: Part IV complete ingredients: 4 x Block of Steel (common drop) 1 x Hero's Cartridge (casino prize) cost: 24,000 Yen (without discount) / 19,200 Yen (with discount) You can get a Hero's Cartridge from either the casino floor of the Ryugujo or the Fukuma Casino in Purgatory. Just buy 200 chips (which will cost you 20k Yen) and then cash-out immediately at the Prize Exchange counter. *The name of this weapon category is commonly spelled incorrectly. It's not got anything to do with antimatter or material. The French word "materiel" is used in English to refer to military equipment (as opposed to "personnel") so an AMR uses large heavy rounds (typically .50" cal) that possess such great momentum and penetrating force that they can be used to damage vehicles, although they'd obviously be very effective in an anti-personnel role too! Grenade ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are two designs for grenade launchers but you need to invest a total of one million Yen in Kamiyama's business for them to be available so you might want to save first, invest, mod all the designs to get the trophy and then reload to get your money back. You can make either design for the trophy. Both recipes require one exotic ingredient but fortunately both can be bought from Hasegawa at Cafe Alps. Both recipes require that your Weapon Skill be upgraded to Advanced Level. If you have sufficient Soul Points you can do this from the Abilities menu. Incendiary Grenade Launcher ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: Grenade Launcher (buy from Kamiyama for 56,000 Yen*) requires: 1 million Yen investment ingredients: 2 x Cooking Oil (buy from Poppo Mart on Showa St for 240 Yen) 1 x Super Coolant (buy from Hasegawa for 200 points) cost: 6,400 Yen (with discount) The Super Coolant item is also a reward for both Goda's substory 'The Gangs of Kamurochou' and Kiryuu's substory 'The Lost Shield Part 1' so you should have a couple already if you've completed those. If Igita in Kamiyama's truck offers you goodies for free you should find the Super Coolant item in both his bundles "Common Parts (6-Piece Set A)" and "Rare Parts (3-Piece Set A)". Stun Grenade Launcher ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ base: Grenade Launcher (buy from Kamiyama for 56,000 Yen*) requires: 1 million Yen investment ingredients: 3 x Battery (buy from any convenience store for 900 Yen) 1 x SSS Gunpowder (buy from Hasegawa for 250 points) cost: 6,400 Yen (with discount) The SSS Gunpowder item is also a reward for both Goda's substory 'The Dragon of Kansai' and Kiryuu's substory 'The Lost Shield Part 2' so you should have a couple already if you've completed those. If Igita in Kamiyama's truck offers you goodies for free you should find the SSS Gunpowder item in his collection "Rare Parts (3-Piece Set A)". *Remember you'll need an empty weapon inventory slot to be able to buy one. This price includes the discount you receive for investing one million Yen. 39 Official Sponsor [Bronze] When visiting Kamiyama's workshop you can invest money there to improve the range of services he has available to you. You get this trophy for investing the maximum amount which is one million Yen! To get this trophy as early as possible without blowing all your resources, wait until you have cash and items worth 1 million Yen in total, save your game, sell the items at the pawnshop, make the maximum investment (ding) and finally reload your save to restore your previous state. So for example if you invested 100,000 Yen during your first playthrough you'll find that this same total is applied in your new game. *These grenade launcher variants are not required to use the incendiary and stun grenades - you can equip and throw them manually too. ------< MINIGAME TROPHIES >--------------------------------------- [Section 10] Their beloved Kamurochou may be plagued with zombies but the locals don't let a little thing like an undead infestation get in the way of their leisure time! As usual in a Yakuza game there's a wide range of minigames on offer. Most of the locations first become available to you in Part I-3 after meeting Hasegawa again and taking a quick (involuntary!) trip back into the quarantine zone through the back door of the Millennium Tower. Minigame locations outside the zone will be freely available at this point but those inside will need to be effectively unlocked by liberating them of zombies. Minigame "playspots" are marked on your minimap in purple. You can also view them on the pause menu's map where you can press X to zoom in or press Triangle to display a directory (then scroll to see each location indicated on the map). The minigame trophies are pretty simple overall in this title - most of them are awarded simply for playing the games. This'll cost a little money (notably you need 100,000 Yen to play baccarat) so you might want to leave these until later in the game when you can afford to lose a little cash. Alternatively you can save your game first, get the trophies then reload to restore your money total. To get these trophies you will need to play all the minigames with the exception of Aromatherapy Massage which is not required. 40 All Units, Report! [Bronze] The requirement here is that all four characters undergo training at Gary's Boot Camp* located on the eastern branch of Senryou Avenue. This is good for grinding XP and unlocking a few special abilities. GBC becomes available to Akiyama in Part I-3 after leaving the medical clinic during the story. For the other three characters you can go straight there at any time when you're in free-roam. Obviously you won't be able to get this trophy until Part IV. Just make sure that you complete at least one training session (either a "Shooting Range" or a "Field Combat") with each of the four playable characters. *I don't really consider this a minigame as such but it's listed with the other games on the completion menu so I've included it in this section. 41 Life of the Party [Bronze] For this trophy you need to sing all the karaoke songs at the Karaokekan on the west side of Senryou Avenue which becomes available in Part I-3. There's no requirement to achieve a target score, you just have to sing each song at least once. This would be trivial except for the fact that only certain songs are available to each of the four characters (see below). You can check your progress under Challenges \ Minigames \ Karaoke off the pause menu. This lists all eleven songs* along with the rank you've achieved. For songs you have not yet sung the rank is given as "Karaoke Virgin". A connoisseur will save Kamurochou Lullaby until last. Arigatou gozaimashita. :D (However if you do miss any you can just do them in Premium Adventure mode.) *This is exactly the same selection of songs that appeared in Yakuza 4. 42 Lounge Lizard [Bronze] The requirement for this one is that you play the darts and pool minigames five times each (and you can choose any of the modes available within each). You can play darts at the Bantam pub which is located immediately to the east of the Millennium Tower in the centre of the map. This will become available at the start of Part I-3 when you're free to wander the city. By Part IV it will be in the quarantine zone and require liberation before you can enter. It would be quickest to play solo games of 301 if you can manage a six-dart finish or otherwise go for solo Count-Up where you only have to throw nine darts (and they can land anywhere). You can play pool in the Cuez Bar which can be found in the small underground shopping mall that you access off Showa Street along the southern edge of the map. You'll find that the mall is locked in the early stages of Part I-3 but when you progress the story you'll pass through it on the way to the Oriental Building. The bar won't be available at that time but when you get back into free-roam you'll be able to head back into the quarantine zone, fight your way to the southern end of Tenkaichi Street and then take a left onto Showa Street where you can take the stairs down into the mall (and the bar). When you get there you'll have to "liberate" the area before you can enter the venue. Just select the bar entrance to initiate this and kill the small group of zombies that appear. You'll be granted access to the bar after you kill the last one and then, finally, you'll be able to play some pool. If you've caught the zombie Esper Ito in the fishing minigame you'll be able to play 9-Ball pool* against him for free, otherwise each game costs 800 Yen. *Personally I favour a little Four-Ball Carom - now that's a man's game! 43 Outdoorsman [Bronze] You get this bronze trophy for playing the golf and fishing minigames once each. The locations for both activities are off the main map so you'll need to take a taxi to get there - these become available in Part I-3 of the story and can be found in four locations (one on each edge of the map) marked with little orange car icons. You can go fishing* at the docks. Just talk to the seated fisherman and he'll give you a free book of tips and sell you bait items which are required for fishing. Then just activate the fishing rod that's sitting nearby to launch the minigame. You're not required to catch a fish, you can just cast your line and wait for it to time-out, or if you hook a fish just let it go. (Once you've finished you can return to the city by speaking to the taxi driver who's waiting patiently for you next to one of the forklift trucks.) To play golf you'll have to visit the golf course - you can't go directly there from the docks though (you'll need to go back to Kamurochou first) and it's only available during daylight hours. At the golf course you can choose between a competition, a contest and the (free) practice mode. The latter seemed not to work for this - I didn't get the trophy until I played a full round of the Closest-To-Pin Contest (ten tee shots). *For a full list of everything you can catch in the fishing game (along with the optimum ranges and time of day) refer to Section 27w in Seiyou's guide. 44 Indoor Sportsman [Bronze] For this one you're required to play the batting, bowling and table tennis minigames three times each. Batting practice is based at the Yoshida Batting Centre to the north-west of the map (opposite M Store), bowling is at Mach Bowl immediately to the west of Theatre Square (enter the building from the south) and table tennis is available at the Kamurochou Hot Spring Heaven baths (off Park Boulevard to the south of Majima's Kamurochou Hills development in the north-east corner). All three locations become available to you in Part I-3 of the story but the quarantine zone expands to include Mach Bowl in Part II and both the Batting Centre and Hot Spring Heaven in Part III so you'll need to liberate each of the venues before you can use them again. I tried quitting out of my third bowling game early and didn't receive the trophy so I think you need to finish three complete matches, although you can select to play solo matches of three frames each to save time. 45 Pro Gambler [Bronze] To earn this trophy you need to play each of the four traditional Japanese gambling games at least once. You can play these on the "gambling hall" floor at the Ryugujo (aka Dragon Palace) which is situated on Park Boulevard at the top of the map and becomes available in Part I-3. From Part III onwards the venue will need to be liberated before you can enter. All of the games require you to buy an amount of wooden tags (Kifuda*) which function like casino/poker chips and can be bought at a fixed rate of 100 Yen per point (in quantities of 50, 100 or 1000 pts). Here's a quick list of the four games and the amount of tags required to play each one. o Oicho-Kabu (100 pts) o Chou-Han (1 pt) o Cee-Lo** (10 pts) o Koi-Koi (200 pts) There's no requirement to win any number of games or points, you simply need to play each game once. *Such wooden tags can be seen clearly in the 2003 samurai movie Zatoichi. **Cee-Lo is the name commonly used in American English for this dice game. In Japan it's known as Chinchirorin. 46 Casino Master [Bronze] This works a lot like the previous trophy but this time you're required to play each of the western gambling games. These are available at both the Rune Casino at the Ryugujo (on Park Boulevard still) which becomes available in Part I-3 or at the Fukuma Casino down in Purgatory in Part II-3. Again you need to buy tokens before you can play - you can buy these at a rate of 100 Yen per chip (in quantities of 50, 100, 500, 1,000 or 10k chips) and here's a list of all the games along with the minimum chip count required to play each one. o Blackjack (10 chips) o Roulette (1 chip) o Poker (low rate) (100 chips) o Baccarat (1,000 chips) Note the high chip requirement for the baccarat game. You'll need 100,000 Yen to buy the 1,000 chips needed to enter a game of baccarat. You can play poker and blackjack at two different rates (high-rate blackjack is only available at the Purgatory casino) but you are not required to play each variant for the trophy - just play poker and blackjack once each. 47 Welcome to SEGA [Bronze] The requirement here is that you play every available game in the Club Sega arcades at least once, i.e. the UFO Catcher machine and all *three* versions of the weird Boxcelios shoot-'em-up. (If you have the original Japanese edition of the game you will also need to play the "An x An" quiz machine which is not playable in the Euro/US game.) The tricky thing here is that there are two branches of Club Sega - one on the north side of Theatre Square and the other on the east side of Nakamichi Street - but each only has two of the three versions of Boxcelios available so you'll need to visit both. Club Sega on Nakamichi has Boxcelios and Boxcelios II and it becomes freely available to you in Part I-3 of the story. Club Sega on Theatre Square however has Boxcelios and Boxcelios II Turbo. It is briefly available in Part I-1 (after the gun tutorial) but if you missed your chance then you'll need to wait until Part I-3 when, after entering and leaving the quarantine zone to advance the story, you can re-enter the zone and liberate the arcade to regain access. 48 Pachinko Wizard [Bronze] This trophy is unusual in that you actually have to buy it within the game - you can get it from the prize counter at Volcano, south of Theatre Square. Like Club Sega nearby, this location is briefly available at the very start of the game but thereafter you'll need to liberate it before you can enter. Volcano is home to two minigames - pachinko and slot machines. You need to buy credit before you can play either: balls for pachinko or tokens for the slot machines. You can buy the trophy for either 3,000 balls or 1,200 tokens. Unfortunately you can't just buy the required amount of credit and exchange it for the prize. There's a limit on the amount you can buy (50 tokens for slots or 250 balls for pachinko, either will cost you 1,000 Yen). In order to reach your target you'll need to win the extra credit required by playing either pachinko or slots. Whichever of the two games you choose to play, remember to quit out (press Select to exit) when you have enough credit to buy the trophy! Slots ¯¯¯¯¯ On the slots you press R1 to bet credits (or R2 to bet the maximum of three), press up or down on the d-pad or left stick to start the reels and then press the Square, X and O buttons to stop the left, centre and right reels. If you make a horizontal or diagonal row of three matching symbols you win tokens (although if you match three small blue circles you seem to only win a free spin with three credits pre-loaded and matching three gold bells only gives you a small instant pay-out). The following cheat items are available for the slot machine minigame: - High Payout Token ("this lucky charm is a must-have for slots lovers") sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 02 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - High Win-Rate Token (gives better odds of winning) sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 02 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - Auto Token ("rumoured to allow slot machines to be played automatically") It's a shame you can't combine this with the other items because this is really handy. It's basically an autopilot that plays the game for you (it saves you having to press [R2, down, Square, X, O] every five seconds until your hand goes numb). You can just sit back and read a book or something, although you will still have to manually pump another 1,000 Yen into it every two or three minutes. I tried doing this for about an hour (while writing various bits of this guide) and, although I got plenty of little wins (blue circles and gold bells) and quite a few near-misses, I didn't get any big pay-outs. :6 sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 02 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) Pachinko ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ I chose to go with pachinko - the controls are simpler and it requires a lot less input! You use d-pad left/right to adjust the big knob that controls the speed at which the balls are released into the machine. That's it really! You might also occasionally be required to use Push (which is the Square button). While playing the game you'll notice the total number of balls you possess decreases steadily as they are feed into the game. The object is to get balls into the little aperture immediately below the centre of the video screen. Each time you manage this you'll earn one "spin" on the virtual slot machine on the display. When you trigger a jackpot event extra balls will be continually added to your total for a period of time. You will be winning additional balls faster than they're being fed into the machine so your total will start increasing (and you'll be making a profit). Despite once wishing it would be added to the series as a playable minigame, I've tried to play pachinko as little as possible in Yakuza 4 and YDS! I've been quite successful with it in the past, but probably because I've always used a cheat item. ;) I would recommend that you do the same. The following cheats can be used with pachinko... - Gambler's Amulet ("makes pachinko machines spin like crazy") sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) - Chance Stone ("increase[s] your odds of winning by x1.5 for 1,000 spins") sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) - Get-Rich-Quick Charm ("said to give you a win on your first spin") sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) It wouldn't hurt to also equip the Lucky Bracelet while working towards this trophy. I got mine for reaching 15th place in the mahjong tournament ladder but you can also simply buy one from the Ebisu pawnshop for 22,000 Yen. I used the Gambler's Amulet item (a lucky catch in the fishing minigame) in conjunction with the Lucky Bracelet, playing on one of the Aladdin machines. Usually you should set the speed to around 60% so the balls fall on the left side (specifically on the little gap between the pins under Aladdin's left eye) but, when prompted, you'll need to increase the speed such that they go to the right side (aiming for the little red pocket opposite Aladdin). I got into a bonus mode and, like in Yakuza 4, after that it all seemed to be self- sustaining... I left it running, switching left and right as directed by the game, and got up to around 6,300 balls - more than enough for the trophy - before I quit out. You can play shogi at Shoten ("shogi heaven") on south Senryou Avenue in the south-east corner of the map and mahjong at the Orchid Palace mahjong parlour on Nakamichi Alley due east of the pawnshop and just to the north-west of the south save point (marked (S) on the map). Both locations become available in Part I-3 of the story. In Part III of the story the mahjong parlour will find itself inside the newly-expanded quarantine zone and will require liberation. Mahjong ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ If you want to get the mahjong win properly you'll need to learn the basics of the game. Check out my YDS Mahjong Guide on this site which will tell you everything you need to know about the game - and more besides! It also has a handy quickstart section which gives an introduction to the game and advice on elementary strategy to improve your chances of winning. There is one cheat item for mahjong but it's only available during the final event for the hostess Erika from club Shine. You'd need to play as Akiyama and get Erika up to the maximum twenty hearts (see trophy #32). Shogi ¯¯¯¯¯ Shogi is quite similar to western chess except it's harder to recognise the pieces, the board is different* and you have the added complications of being able to promote your pieces and to redeploy (or "drop") ones you've captured from your opponent. So it's fortunate that the little trick I came up with for shogi in Yakuza 4 works again here. You can get a win in just two moves! The key is to use the Challenge mode - beating this counts as a win, both for the trophy and for minigame completion. Choose the Trial 1 option and then click OK to confirm the config settings. _______ | S G B | In Trial 1 a significant handicap is applied to your opponent. Bonus! *The standard game of shogi is played on a 9x9 board, each player starting with twenty pieces, but there are several variants - both larger and smaller. The biggest is Taikyoku Shogi which is played on a 36x36 board! I've included details of how to make the most of the gambling cheat items (and where to find them). These will need to be in your inventory to be able to use them. Sometimes you select one when you enter the game but otherwise you'll need to press Triangle when prompted during a game to use one. The item will vanish after you've used it - you cannot re-use it so make it count! Due to the gambling laws in Japan, you cannot convert tokens (i.e. casino chips, gambling-hall tags and mahjong scoring-sticks) directly back into cash, instead you must exchange them for prizes and then sell these to get the money. You must always use the metal plate items when doing this since they sell for their true value and offload them at the Ebisu pawnshop to get the best price available (since Kamiyama pays 20% less for many items including the plates). o Cutie Girl Figures Sometimes, instead of raw materials for modding, a zombie will drop a Cutie Girl Figure. This will appear as a twinkling dot on the ground (like any other drop) but if you look closely you'll see little hearts radiating off it. You will also sometimes find these during an action stage. These are sometimes dropped by the "Zombie Millionaires" too - the ones with a yellow jacket and briefcase who flee when you approach them. They spawn in a specific area in each part of the story (see Section 13 intro). Kamiyama collects these figures and will pay handsomely for them - even though they all look the same! :) Head over to his armoured truck and he'll pay you a tasty 50,000 Yen each. They serve no other purpose so they're safe to sell. This is a great way to earn a decent amount of money without making any special effort for it (you'll be killing zombies anyway). You only need twenty Cutie Girl Figures to collect one million Yen off Kamiyama. Ker-ching! :) Since they're so valuable, if your inventory is full when you find one it's worth either buying an inventory upgrade or discarding something less valuable so you can pick it up. Look out for those tell-tale hearts. During my first playthrough of the story I found a total of seventy-three of these which I was able to sell to Kamiyama for 3,650,000 Yen! o SR Love Shine Figures Same as above but a lot rarer so Kamiyama will pay 150k Yen for each you find! I only got two of these on my first playthrough. One from Igita in Kamiyama's truck (see below) and another by back-tracking behind some girders on the way through the railway tunnels in Part IV-3 of the story. I got another one in Premium Adventure mode as part of a bundle of rewards for clearing 50+ floors of the Endless Subterranea game (see trophy #11). o Apocalypse Fun Packs [requires European edition of the game or US edition with correct DLC] The Online Features option off the main menu details the contents of the eight Apocalypse Fun Packs which you can collect from Naomi's Palace on Nakamichi Street in Premium Adventure and Premium New Game modes (see Section 03). These mostly contain additional cheat items for the gambling games which you can use to make a lot of money (see notes for individual minigames below) plus a few rare/valuable modding ingredients. o Igita [requires European edition of the game or US edition with correct DLC] You'll find Igita sitting behind Kamiyama in his truck. In addition to giving you the option to dress your hostess partners, he also liberates a wide range of very valuable "goodies" from Kamiyama's supply and gives them to you for free! I was a little apprehensive of taking advantage of this but it seems that you really do get given tons of really good items. I guess this is to make up for the lack of coin-lockers in this game and to make modding easier. In total he can provide you with six rare "Dragon" items, ten "Parts" sets containing a total of 45 modding ingredients, two Cutie Girl Figures, one SR Love Shine Figure, five Deluxe Recovery Packs (each containing three powerful healing items), a Gold Plate and no less than twenty cheat items for gambling! (Remember it's always safe to sell the various metal plates (you can buy new ones at the casinos) and girl figures (they have no other purpose than to be sold) but some of the other items are unique rare ones that are required for modding recipes and cannot be re-acquired once you've sold them.) o Hasegawa After meeting Hasegawa (see trophies #33/34) you'll earn points by completing a wide range of Directives and Spec-Ops missions for her and then you can trade the points for rewards. You can exchange 1,000 points for a Gold Plate which you can sell at the pawnshop for 100,000 Yen. Repeat as required. You can make a lot of money from doing this, but remember to buy any other items you might want off her first and to retain at least 5,000 points if you want to be able to unlock Hasegawa's final event. Despite making a number of purchases off her during the course of the story, by the end of my first playthrough I still had more than 63,000 points left which would be enough to buy 63 Gold Plates (worth 6.3 million Yen in total). o Substories Completing a substory sometimes gives you a cash reward or possibly valuable items you can sell (although often they'll be rare mod ingredients that you'll probably want to retain). Majima's 'Serum Salesman' substory in Part II-4 is noteworthy as you receive a Platinum Plate which is worth 150,000 Yen and safe to sell since it's easy to buy a replacement if you need one (or three) later. Akiyama's 'Collection Time' sequence gives a final pay-out of 80,000 Yen. Majima's 'Zombie Sprint!' substory has a reward of 150,000 Yen. Kiryuu's 'The Majima Man' substory gives you 50,000 Yen. o Story Completion You get a substantial cash bonus each time you complete the game and this will carry over into Premium Adventure or a Premium New Game (see Section 03). The amount depends on the difficulty you selected. Easy: 1 million Yen Normal: 2 million Yen Hard: 3 million Yen Extra Hard: 5 million Yen Dead Souls: 10 million Yen If you failed a stage a couple of times and accepted the game's offer to retry on a lower difficulty you will be paid according to that lower diff! [thanks to hardcore rpg gamer for confirming the Dead Souls completion bonus] o Endless Subterranea This play mode can be accessed during Premium Adventure mode (see Section 03) after completing the story. It involves fighting (and/or running!) through floors of underground passages full of enemies, trying to complete as many as possible. See trophy #11 for more information on this mode. You'll need to clear fifty floors in Endless Subterranea mode anyway for the Underground Kings trophy (#11) and you should be quite well rewarded for this. I got a powerful Zero Jewel cheat item (which can be used to make a large sum of money in roulette - see below), an SR Love Shine Figure (worth 150k Yen) and one each of the three rare and valuable "Dragon" mod ingredients. I think that's probably a one-off reward, but I'm not doing it again to check! o Baccarat With its high stakes (you can bet up to 1 million Yen on a single round) and basic format (it's pretty close to being a simple coin-toss!) it's very easy to make some big money very quickly. The minimum bet is 1,000 chips so you'll need at least 100,000 Yen to play the game but it's best to wait until you have at least a million Yen so you can bet the maximum stake (10,000 chips) to get the largest possible pay-out. If you haven't got any cheat items for baccarat you'll want to use the classic gaming cheat of saving your game, making a big bet and then saving if you win or reloading if you lose. You can play baccarat at either of the two casinos but it's probably easiest to do this at the one in Purgatory as the save-point is more convenient (especially after the Ryugujo falls into the quarantine). Save your game at the telephone, head over to the casino and bet the maximum 10,000 chips on "Player". If you win you'll get another 10,000 chips - worth one million Yen - then go off and save and try to do it again. If you lose press Select to quit out and reload your save. Rinse and repeat. There are also a couple of cheat items for Baccarat: - Player's Piece ("makes it easy to win [on] Player in baccarat") This item usually causes the Player hand to win on the current round, but it does sometimes give a tie in which case you lose your stake. :6 sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 08 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - Banker's Piece ("makes it easy to win [on] Banker in baccarat") This works the same way as the Player's Piece, but for a Banker win. For a Banker win with a 10,000-chip stake the pay-out will be 9,500 chips. sources: fishing minigame (catch a briefcase containing a random item) Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 08 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) o Roulette Like Baccarat, this is a game of luck but there are three different cheat items available: - Zero Jewel ("can apparently make a single or double zero come up") This is a hugely powerful item. Since you play on American tables* there's a 0 (zero) and 00 (double zero) on the roulette wheel. Any bet placed on either of these counts as a "straight up" bet with a return of 1:36. The effect of this item is to cause the next spin of the wheel to come out on either 0 or 00 so you have a 50:50 chance of picking the right one. To make the best use of this item, save the game and place the maximum bet (1,000 chips) on either 0 or 00 - you will need 100,000 Yen to "invest". If your choice comes up then you win 36,000 chips (worth a massive 3.6 million Yen) but if it doesn't just reload from the save and try again. Alternatively you can place a "split" bet on the border between 0 and 00 for a guaranteed win but half the pay-out (1:18 return so 1.8 million Yen). sources: reward package for clearing 50+ floors in Endless Subterranea Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 07 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - Red Jewel ("can apparently make red the winning colour in roulette") As you might guess from the name, this forces the wheel to come out on red. I'll let you draw your own conclusions! o Blackjack Although of course luck is involved, there is always an optimum strategy to use in blackjack depending on which cards you've been dealt and which card the dealer is showing. Just do an internet image search for "blackjack strategy" or check my Yakuza 3 Trophies Guide for a beautiful ASCII-art version! :) There are two different cheat items for blackjack: - Blackjack Amulet ("can apparently help its owner to draw lucky cards") Just like in Yakuza 3 and 4, this guarantees you a streak of five Blackjacks (instant win on 21) in a row. This pays 2.5 times your stake. For best effect, save these until you have access to the casino inside the Purgatory area. There's a high-stakes blackjack table there where the stakes are ten times higher than normal. If you bet the max of 1,000 chips (100,000 Yen) you will win 2,500 chips per hand (250k Yen). Don't forget the effect lasts for five hands too so you can make a profit of 1.25 million Yen with each Blackjack Amulet you use. sources: Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 08 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - Bust Amulet ("can apparently make the dealer go bust more frequently") This item forces the dealer to go bust so you can "stand" on any number and still win. The effect seems to last for a few hands. sources: Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) o Poker Predictably it's the ubiquitous Texas Hold 'Em style of poker that features. There is one type of cheat item for the poker minigame: - Royal Joker Card ("said to help its owner get a good hand in poker") This always gives you a high-ranking combination, like Three/Four of a Kind or sometimes a Full House or Straight Flush. If you choose to play high-ante (and at least one of your opponents doesn't fold) you could pick up a pot of maybe two or three thousand chips. sources: Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 01 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) o Cee-Lo (aka Chinchirorin) You can play cee-lo on the gambling hall level of the Ryugujo. It's one of two traditional dice games that are playable there in YDS. It's a game of pure luck. In each turn one player is the designated banker and the others bet against him. Each player gets three attempts to throw three dice, trying to get a matching pair. If you get a pair then the number on the third dice becomes your score or "point". A player wins if his score beats the banker's, otherwise the banker wins. A roll of 1-2-3 is an automatic loss (and you pay double your stake), a 4-5-6 win pays double your stake, a 1-1-1 triple pays five times your stake and any other triple pays triple. If the banker rolls 6 as their point that's also an automatic win (at the standard rate). There are four types of cheat items for cee-lo, three copied from Yakuza 3 and one from Yakuza 4. To make the best use of these you'll need one million Yen! It's a lot of money but it's a sound investment that gives a huge pay-off. The reason you need a million is because your three opponents' points totals will always match yours, up to a limit of 10,000 pts. When they have more points, they'll make bigger bets and you'll win more points. :) So wait until you have enough cash and buy yourself 10,000 pts. Save the game "just in case". The cheat items will be most effective when you are the banker (indicated by the red "Bk" marker) so either "tread water" by betting the minimum each turn until you're banker or, preferably, start the game and quit out immediately if you're not the banker on your first turn (you won't lose points for this). After your cheating win, quit out and repeat the process so that you use each cheat item as banker. For the 1-2-3 Gum and Piss Mountain Stone it's best to save before each use in case you can't make a pair. If you do this early in the game or during Free Adventure in Premium Adventure mode (see Section 03) you'll be able to use the save-point behind the Millennium Tower. - All 1's Charm ("you can roll all 1's in dice") This is the big one. It guarantees you a 1-1-1 win so you'll score quintuple points! You can easily win 10,000+ points off this (that's 1 million Yen). You still need to roll a pair though so it's best to save your game before using this item. sources: Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 03 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - Piss Mountain Stone ("it'll cause opponents to miss the pot in cee-lo") When playing as banker this forces all three opponents to "piss" one of the dice - they miss the pot, it counts as a foul and they automatically lose. If you don't use them you can only expect to break-even in the long-term. *"Youkan" (with long "o") is a sweet jelly made from red bean paste and sugar. o Chou-Han* This is the other dice game. A large group of shady characters bet on whether the total of two dice will be even (Chou) or odd (Han). So it's another game of luck and the best you can do is to bet against the majority so when you do win you'll get more points. I haven't put any time into this, but I suspect it plays like Yakuza 3 so the cap on your betting stake will be raised after you've played it a little. There are two types of cheat items for this game: - Even Goro's Beads ("lets you roll evens in chou-han") This forces the dice roll to come out even on the current throw. sources: Igita in Kamiyama's truck (if goodies available) Apocalypse Fun Pack 05 (in Premium Adventure mode if available) - Lopsider Cigarette ("apparently causes opponents to bet one way") This causes a significant bias in the betting so that most people will bet on either even or odd. Anime fans might like to know that the main character in the animated series based on the mahjong manga Akagi (as shown on the posters inside the mahjong parlour in Yakuza 4 and YDS!) has a rather bloody encounter over a game of chou-han at a gambling den with some dodgy gangster types in Episode 14. Afro Samurai bets his 'fro on the outcome of a quick game of chou-han in the movie Afro Samurai: Resurrection. The game's also featured in Episode 3 of the anime Samurai Champloo, and again in Episode 4 where Fuu demonstrates her remarkable dice-rolling technique! The game has also appeared in numerous live-action yakuza and samurai films over the years. Two recent examples are Takeshi Kitano's 2003 reboot of the Zatoichi franchise (which features several scenes of chou-han gambling) and Takashi Miike's 2010 remake of the 1963 samurai movie Juusan-Nin No Shikaku ("Thirteen Assassins" in English). o Bowling If you can refine your bowling technique so that you can bowl a "perfect" game (i.e. one where you score 300 by getting a strike with every bowl) then you'll receive a Perfect Game Cup worth a cool three million Yen! You get another cup for each subsequent perfect game too. [thanks to ViietNam1 and Gjang for this info] o Surplus Ammo You can collect free ammunition and grenades from the SDF ammo dumps in the quarantine zone. Kamiyama will buy any you don't want to use, for example he pays 2,400 Yen for each box of 200 SMG rounds and 2,500 Yen for each set of ten grenades. Try to get in the habit of clearing out every ammo cache you pass each time you enter the quarantine zone. Even if your inventory is full you can force items into your hideout stash so you can take everything each time. You will soon build up a healthy reserve and never have to spend money on ammo. Your hideout's item stash cannot hold any more than 9,999 rounds of any type of ammunition so it makes sense to sell a little before you reach that stage. o Mutant Drops Although you'll want to keep a few to use as ingredients in modding recipes, the unique items dropped by the seven species of mutant (see trophy #17) are quite valuable - you can sell them to Kamiyama for 10,000 Yen apiece. Look out for the small but distinctive halo on the "twinkles" on the ground. o Money-Making Beads This item is your reward for completing all sixty substories in the game. If you equip it in one of your accessory slots you'll receive ten Yen for each shot you fire with any firearm. It's not going to make you a huge amount of money (e.g. emptying the 55-round magazine of the Tojo assault rifle will get you just 550 Yen) but it's a fun little bonus and, to quote a UK advertising slogan, "every little 'elps"! I guess if you had a joypad with an autofire feature and you could find a safe spot you could build up a decent amount of money by leaving your character firing pistol rounds overnight (since the handguns have infinite ammo). o Mahjong If you enjoy playing mahjong (or if you want to dedicate some time to learning how to play) then you can make a nice profit. Entering the tournament costs 50,000 Yen and then you can play for free. You can't lose anything (other than tournament standing) and if you collect all the prizes available you can sell them for a 794,400 Yen profit. You can do this separately with each of the four playable characters too! You can also do well off the gambling tables especially since each match win also attracts an "Uma" bonus of up to 75,000 pts (worth an extra 75k Yen). Since the tournament outcome and Uma are unaffected by game length, you can play the "quarter game" option to progress twice as fast. The shorter matches are a little more unpredictable though and luck is more of a factor (if your bot opponents get lucky you have less time in which to stage a comeback). For tips and comprehensive coverage of the modern Japanese rules of mahjong take a look at my YDS Mahjong Guide on this site. o Fishing It can take a long time to land your catch in the fishing minigame but some- times it'll be valuable. You can sell a marlin for 50,000 Yen, a tuna for 100k and a coelacanth for a very handy 150k.* It's also possible to catch briefcases** which will sometimes contain cheat items for gambling games which will make you a lot of money too - I've got a Gambler's Amulet (for pachinko) and Banker's Piece (for baccarat) this way. You might also get one containing a Platinum Plate worth 150,000 Yen. *Those are the prices your fish will fetch at the pawnshop in the city. You also have the option of selling your catch to the fisherman at the docks but he pays 20% less so it's best to hang onto the more valuable fish until you get back into town. (I like to sell the cheaper ones to the fisherman though to free up inventory slots and to cover the cost of buying bait from him.) **The recommended bait items for catching briefcases are the shrimp, squid, worm and - randomly - the King Smile Burger Set! (bought from Smile Burger on Nakamichi Street with the "to go" option) [fishing data in this guide is adapted from the Japanese YDS wiki website] o Golf I haven't played a full round of golf but that minigame paid quite well in Yakuza 3 - you got 100,000 Yen for first place in the tournament and 50,000 Yen for second. It's hard work though! I previously included full details of how to play the golf minigame in my Yakuza 3 Trophies Guide so take a look at that if you're in need of guidance, although I think the controls have changed a little since then. ------< MODDING RECIPES >----------------------------------------- [Section 13] This section lists every modding recipe in the game. As I was playing the game I kept a list of recipe details and shop item sources for my own reference but as it grew longer I figured I might as well neaten it up and add it here! If you're intending to make a thorough playthrough of the game you might as well leave any major modding efforts until afterwards because many of the substories will provide mod ingredient items as rewards. Also the Subterranea missions (see trophy #30) will give you a number of useful items. If you've completed the story and are playing in Premium Adventure mode (see Section 03) you might be able to collect the contents of eight Apocalypse Fun Packs from Bob B in Naomi's Palace on Nakamichi Street. These mostly contain gambling cheat items but there's also a Ruby in Apocalypse Fun Pack 04 and a complete set of three Dragon items (see below) in AFP 06. The good news is that there are reliable and unlimited supplies for almost all of the ingredient items; several items have multiple sources so I've tried to give the most convenient one/s in the listings below. You can buy some from shops and others from Hasegawa (in exchange for points). Some are prizes at the casinos, the gambling hall floor at the Ryugujo or the mahjong parlour - in these cases you don't need to play the game/s there, you can simply buy some tokens and then exchange them for the prize/s you want. The most rare/precious items are the following four which cannot be bought: o Super Hard Aluminium Alloy Your main source for these are the "Zombie Millionaire" type zombies who have a yellow jacket, carry a briefcase and flee when you enter their area. If you can catch and kill one they'll leave a valuable drop. About half the time it will be a Super Hard Aluminium Alloy although I've also seen them drop Cutie Girl Figures, Toughness Infinity and Comfy Soles! The millionaires seem to only spawn in specific locations which change in each of the four parts of the story. They won't always be there when you look so keep checking each time you're in that area. - with Akiyama look near the park (Public Park 3) off Tenkaichi Alley - with Majima look west of the gas tanker on Park Boulevard East by the wall - with Goda try west and central Shichifuku Street - with Kiryuu try Taihei Boulevard West near the medical clinic [thanks to dargondarkfire and TheZenNinja for the Goda and Kiryuu locations] You will also receive Super Hard Aluminium Alloy among the various rewards when you complete Goda and Kiryuu's Subterranea missions in Parts III and IV. There's one SHAA in the Densetsu DLC's Emergency Supplies 07 set too. o Seal of the Dragon / Eye of the Dragon / Blood of the Dragon The three Dragon items are needed to make some of the most advanced equipment. They're available only from a few one-off sources so don't sell them until you've completed all the modding recipes! - Akiyama's substory 'Big Daddy Part 3' in Part I-3 (Eye x 1) - Akiyama's substory 'Collection Time: Juri' in Part I-4 (Seal x 1) - Majima's substory 'More Zombening, Starring Majima' in Part II-2 (Eye x 1) - Majima's substory 'The Sixth Chairman's Woes' in Part II-3 (Seal x 1) - Majima's substory 'House Unrest Part 5' in Part II-4 (Eye x 1) - Goda's substory 'More Zombening, Starring Goda' in Part III-2 (Seal x 1) - Goda's substory 'The Cowardly Warrior Part 4' in Part III-2 (Blood x 1) - Goda's substory 'Brother and Sister Part 5' in Part III-2 (Blood x 1) - Kiryuu's substory 'A Day in the Life of Date Part 4' in Part IV-2 (Seal x 1) - Kiryuu's substory 'The Zombening, Starring Kiryuu' in Part IV-2 (Blood x 1) - Kiryuu's substory 'Zombie Rights' in Part IV-2 (Eye x 1) [substory reward info sourced from Seiyou_All_Star's YDS guide] - Igita in Kamiyama's truck (Seal x 2, Eye x 2, Blood x 2) If you have the European edition of YDS or the US version with the correct DLC you'll be able to collect a load of useful items from Kamiyama's buddy Igita for free including a grand total of six Dragon items (two of each). You can also pick up twenty different cheat items for gambling games and a total of forty-five other modding ingredients from Igita including two each of the mutant unique drops (Meathead Belt, Cry Baby Barrette, etc). - Apocalypse Fun Pack 06 (Seal x 1, Eye x 1, Blood x 1) You can collect this from Bob B at Naomi's Palace in Premium Adventure mode after beating the game for the first time (see Section 03), although I think you need either the European edition of the game or the correct DLC for it. - Endless Subterranea 50th floor reward package (Seal x 1, Eye x 1, Blood x 1) When you clear fifty or more floors in the Endless Subterranea mode (see trophy #11) you receive the three Dragon items plus a Zero Jewel cheat item for roulette and an SR Love Shine Figure worth 150k Yen (sell to Kamiyama). (I assume this is a one-time offer so you only get it the first time.)
