Wipeout Pure is a very entertaining game, it has it's flaws, but there small.
Genre: hi speed racer
Don't be fooled by this "no name game," many of you may have never heard, but Wipeout already has had two other games. The first was a launch game for the PS1, the second came out for the PS2. Both had great game play and stunning graphics (for there time). And Wipeout Pure is no exception. This may not be the greatest racing game ever, but it's fast paced, has stunning graphics (for a hand held) and most of all, it's fun as hell!
The story is very shallow but it's there. In the future (no duh) there was a deadly sport where racers battled to the finish line with there super fast custom built antigravity vehicles. But soon the sport disappeared, but now, years later, a new group of racers are going to race in this deadly sport yet again.
Game play: 8/10
Wipeout Pure is one of the better "futuristic" racing games out there. The goal is (of course) to be first to the finish line. To get there you will need to use any means necessary, unleash a barrage of missiles, or place a mine in a narrow passage. At first there are two difficulties, one is slow (your and your opponent's vehicles actually go slower) and the other is faster. Either way you cut it, you'll be blazing down the course at high speeds.
This isn't the hardiest racing game ever, but it's definitely not the easiest. On easy, the racing is fast, but still slow enough that new players will be able to win races with relative ease. On the higher difficultly the game becomes challenging, and the hardiest settings the game is so fast it becomes extremely hard to control your vehicle. And wining races is no easy chore. Overall you want be breaking anything, but you might get a little frustrated.
Course layout: 9/10
Wipeout Pure has superb course layout. Most "futuristic" racing games become very repetitive very fast. Because most of them take place on man made roads, this is no exception to the man made road part, but they did a great job keeping the layout from becoming the same thing over and over again. Some levels have twists and turns, some are filling with ramps and tight turns. One level even takes place in the clouds. They managed to keep the levels almost all different from each other.
This is the type of game you can play for a couple of hours at a time. More than that and you'll get bored. But during those hours, you will be deeply engrossed in it's high speed action. Sometimes you'll almost forget your racing, because you will be so entertained trying to shoot your enemy. Because of this, Wipeout Pure will make you forget the world around you, and that's what video games are for.
For a handheld, this game deserves a ten (graphic wise). The graphics are as good as a PS2 game! The game is extremely clear and crisp (sharp). Plus the backgrounds are stunning, the city's look like city's, and the sky course is breath taking. Everything about the graphics is superb. Wipeout Pure won't let you down.
Sadly, the sound lacks, though it is clear, the sound effects are... odd. There are very few (if any) realistic sounds in the game. The music is great if you like techno, but if you don't like techno, you'll probably play with the sound off. The overall sound is ok, it's not bad, but it's a let down.
Replay Value: 8/10
To make this short, you'll be playing for about ten-twenty hours after you clear the first two difficulty settings. During that time, you'll have loads of fun. Wipeout Pure is a very fun game with slightly above average replay value.
Rating: 4.0 - Great
