Better than Ridge Racer or NFSU:Rivals
Anyone who has played any previous instalment of this series on the Playstation or Playstation 2 would know that Wipeout is a high speed, combat-enhanced futuristic racing series. Some may say it to be a cross between Ridge Racer and Twisted Metal. The series has since been carried over to the PSP in the form of Wipeout Pure, and it hasnt lost any of its charm.
The story is simple: In the future, there was a deadly sport where racers battled to the finish line with there super fast custom built antigravity vehicles. But soon the sport disappeared. Now, years later, a new group of racers are going to race in this deadly sport yet again. The game doesnt put much emphasis on the storyline at all, which is understandable since racing games are usually not played for their storyline.
You pilot anti-gravity ships and race them around the tracks in hopes of winning the race, by any means necessary. When first playing this game, you might notice the lack of a sense of speed. This, however, is only temporary. You start off with Vector and Venom classes and when you complete tournaments (with good results), you unlock new faster classes. Flash class, the class following Vector and Venom, will be your first taste of real speed in this game, so dont be discouraged when first trying this game.
The difficulty of controlling your ships, however, may be more cause for concern. As these are ships and not cars, the handling is obviously going to be different than that of regular racing games. Youll often find yourself banging into walls throughout the entire game. The twisting tracks make it hard to maintain a good speed while trying to maneuver the turns. The solution to this is to choose a ship with better handling, such as Zone. At the same time, youll also have to keep an eye on your ships health. Once its depleted, youre eliminated from the race. Choosing a ship with the right aspects (which include Thrust, Top Speed, Handling and Shield) could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
The graphics in Wipeout Pure are just plain beautiful, rivalling that of even Ridge Racer. The environments are gorgeous to look at while the ships and tracks are greatly detailed. (One of the tracks even sets you racing among the clouds!) Wipeout Pure is one of the best looking games for the PSP right now.
The sound in Wipeout Pure consists of techno and more techno. Yes, if youre not a fan of techno, you may find yourself playing with the sound off. However, the audio quality is superb and you will not want to miss out on the sound effects in the game. Some of them provide warnings, such as Missile when someone fires a missile.
Overall, I find this game to be a worthy addition to the Wipeout series. Any fan of the series should definitely pick up a copy of this game. Whether it be the gorgeous graphics, exhilarating gameplay or even the hidden web browser, this game should not be missed.
