"Could've been better."

Need for Speed Underground 2

In this Arcade game racer, brought to you by the folks at EA games, is one heck of a ride. Continuing with their famous Need for Speed series, EA games continues to amaze.

Graphics - 7/10

The graphics are pretty. Cars gleam with realism, and buildings look real (for the most part). Neon lights glow nicely, although they can be distracting at times. However, I didn't like the use of the 'comic strip' style of cutscenes, EA could've done better with this point.

Sound - 7/10

Sounds of the game is quite decent. When you get the first engine upgrade, you can hear a noticable difference in the sound of the car's engine. The music in this game is somewhat distracting at times, but some of the songs really suits the mode, like a heavy-metal number when zooming around at 150 miles per hour.

Gameplay - 9/10

The gameplay is great. There are many types of races, including an interesting one called 'Drift', where you have to race around a circuit and rake up as many points as possible by 'drifting'.

The physics of this game is a little off the mark, with cars at times acting unaturally. This isn't a major complaint, but as a Arcade racer, I guess it's not that big a deal.

Story - 1/10

Although a racer, this game has a story, although not a very good one. Racers shouldn't have stories, otherwise it becomes something other than a Racer.

Multiplayer - 3/10 (offline only)

Multiplayer mode isn't that great. Period. On splitscreen mode, 2 players can join in, which is normal. But the biggest gripe is that only one player can use a modified car, while the other can use an unmodified car. This is a very bad move, because some players might want to pit one car against another.

It puts players off to not be able to test fully-modified cars against another, since the point of the whole game is to modify your car anyway. If I wanted to race with others using normal cars, there are plenty of titles where I can do that.

Replayability - 6/10

The races are pretty much the same everytime you start a new game, but you can choose other starting cars for a slightly different feel to the game.

Reviewer's Tilt - 7/10

While not the best racing title, this game has the potential to make it big. The thrill of illegal street racing is too big to ignore for hardcore racing junkies.

Final Score - 6/10

Reviewer's Rating:   3.0 - Fair
