Fun and easy-to-learn gameplay, despite its length.

Gun, a free roaming action game designed by Neversoft (the guys behind the Tony Hawk series). This old-western shooter looks a bit like Grand Theft Auto. Once you play this game, however, you will find out that they are very different.

Graphics: 6.5/10

The environments of the old-west look pretty good, it makes you feel like you are actually there. Characters look a bit stale. Textures look a bit blocky as well. There are instances of slow down when there is a lot of action taking place. X-Box is capable of better visuals than this game has to offer. The graphics overall are tolerable.

Sound: 8.5/10

I really liked the music in this game because it goes well with the old-western environment. However the tracks repeat quite frequently. Voice acting is tolerable, and the gun shots and other sound effects are well done.

Story: 7.5/10

You are Colton White, an animal hunter that hunts with his father, Ned. The story begins where you and Ned are hunting and then you both board a boat. Bandits raid the boat and kill Ned. Colton is forced to escape and tries to discover who killed his father and what he was looking for on that boat. The story is kinda cliche, but it's a story you will be interested in.

Control: 9/10

I found the controls in Gun very responsive. The problem was quickdraw mode where you auto-aim at the enemies in slow motion. Sometimes I wouldn't want to aim at the right person and caused me to die a lot.

Gameplay: 8/10

Gameplay is truly addicting in Gun. It's free roaming like GTA, but sort of a different style. The game world is quite small however. You can basically get on a horse and dash across the map in about three minutes flat. There are many things to do besides kill civilians and start a showdown in a city. You can hunt certain animals, track down people from Wanted posters, be a lawmen and take out the criminals to keep people safe, deliver packages on horseback in a time limit, play Texas Hold Em for a cash prize, and even herd animals into a barn. My favorite moments in Gun is when you are in a gun fight while on a horse against several other horsemen.

There are many things to do in this game. The meat of the gameplay lies into gunplay. Weapons like pistols, knifes, hatchets, rifles, shotguns, and other weapons can be upgraded so they can be more effective. It's gameplay that you will be addicted for hours.

Replay Value: 5/10

This is where it falls short. The main story missions for are just too darn short. The game can be finished in a few days. Side missions and other simple tasks in Gun make up for the short game. Extra in the game are a bit lacking as well.

+Addicting Gameplay
+Decent Story
+Quickdraw Mode

-Beatable in a weekend
-Bland Visuals

Final Thoughts

Gun is a great game for those casual gamers out there, but this not for the hardcore. Right now the game is around 40 to 50 dollars. At that price it is not worth it for a game that can be finished in a few days. I recommend renting the game or buying it at a low price. Somewhere around 20 to 30 dollars. This is still a game that gamers should take a look at.
